First Reading: Corinthians 2:1-10

A reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Your blessing father…

Brothers and Sisters:

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you

in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and

him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech

and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the

Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers

of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which

God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if

they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has

seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love

him’ these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything,

even the depths of God.

Praise be to God always.

Gospel Reading: John 14:21-27

The Apostle Writes:

They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love

me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’ Judas (not

Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?’

Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and

we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep

my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. ‘I have

said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the

Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to

you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do

not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

This is the truth. Peace be with you.

FRANCIS ON HUMILITY

The “failure” of the cross re-veals the “victory of God’s love,”Pope Francis said during his hom-ily yesterday, where he insistedthat God builds upon our weak-nesses and uses them for good.Speaking at Holy Mass in theChapel of Santa Marta in Rome, the pontiff said the “story of lovebetween God and his people ...seems to be a story of failure.” Hu-manity has consistently rejectedGod, even rejecting Jesus to thepoint of his crucifixion on thecross, he added, according to Vati-can Radio. “The path of our re-demption is a path marked byfailure,” Francis told those gath-ered.

“This story that begins with adream of love, that seems to be alove story, but ends up looking likea story of failures, ends with thegreat love of God who offers Sal-vation through the rejection of hisSon who saves us all.”It is at the cross that God turns

upside down our understanding offailure. Love triumphs at the cross;a place that would otherwise ap-pear to one of defeat. “It is a scan-dal ... but here is where love wins.”However, he also stressed that

Christians will fail many times intheir own journey, which “is arough road.“If each of us examines his con-

science, he will see how manytimes ... he has banished theprophets; how many times he hassaid to Jesus: ‘Go away’; howmany times he has wanted to savehimself. How many times we havethought we were the righteousones,” Francis said. But God usesus in our weakness, just as Christwas brutally murdered on the crossand yet rose in glory three dayslater. “The Son, His last envoy, was seized, killed and thrown out.

He became the cornerstone.”It is important, therefore, for

Christians to practice the same hu-mility that Jesus did. “We do wellto remember this love story thatseems to fail, but in the end tri-umphs,” Francis concluded.“And to remember in story of ourlives, the seed of love that God hassown in us and how it went, and
