2 |MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California October 17, 2010

    From The Pastors Desk

Dear Members of our Parish Family,

    Peace and all good!

In todays Gospel (Luke 18:1-18), Jesus tells his disciples

a parable about a crooked judge who is worn down by the

persistent nagging of one very determined widow. It is an

admonition to us, to be constant and persistent in our own

prayer. So far, so good. But as I struggle with this story, I

have to ask myself: Where is God in this account? Is God

the judge who consistently turns a deaf ear to the call of a

poor widow? Inconceivable. We are always told and

reassured constantly that God hears our prayers and knows

our needs even before we mention them in prayer. So, where

is God in all of this?

So, consider this possibility for a moment: just possibly,

Gods presence may be symbolized by the poor widow bound

and determined to receive justice. How about that?

Imaginethat our God would be with the poor and

powerless, with those struggling for justice in their lives.

And how about us? Where are we in the picture? Are wewith God, in solidarity with those who long for greater

freedom and the recognition of their rights and personal

dignity? Or are we tempted to turn a deaf ear to the persistent

plea of those in need? Its not just food for thought; its

    fuel for action.

At the 10 AM Mass last Sunday, Father David Gaa,

ofm, the new Executive Director at the Old Mission was

on hand to concelebrate the liturgy with me. At the end

of Mass, Father David gave us some great news: Starting

with the First Sunday of Advent weekend (November 27

& 28), the doors of the Old Mission Church will be open

to the public for prayer and worship from sunrise to

sunset every day of the year. There is just one missionat the Mission, Father David told us. It doesnt matter

whether we are at the parish or at the Old Mission.

Whether we are with the Knights of Columbus or the

parish school. There is only one mission for all of usto

live and preach with our lives the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

At present, the Old Mission Church is usually accessible only

through the Museum and visitors must pay at the

    door for entry.

To commemorate this important moment in our shared

history, Bishop Robert A. Brom will be with us at a special prayer service (Saturday, November 27, 4 pm). All are

welcome. At the service, the Bishop will announce the beginning of a Year of Prayer for our entire Mission

familya call for all of us to renew our commitment to faith

and to each other. Well announce details later.

For our part, we, your Franciscan brothers (lay brothers

and priests alike) are committed to bringing a renewed sense

of unity to our shared mission. This process of renewal and

reconciliation has already begun with the removal of the

fence separating the two properties of the Parish and the

Mission. Now we are, all of us, embarking upon what will

hopefully be a new era in our relationships. Of course there

will be bumps in the road ahead: we still have to work out

some of the details. And it will require commitment on the

part of all of us. But with the help of the Lord and the

guidance of the Spirit, we will keep on the path.

Meanwhile, back at the ranchwe have marked still an-

other busy weekend at the Parish. Several events, in

particular, deserve mention. In the first place, we celebrated

Columbus Day weekend in a big way. Last Saturday, theKnights of Columbus led the way with their successfulColumbus Day (Spaghetti) Dinner. The following day, the

Knights, their ladies and families, as well as the Columbian

Squires were in attendance at the 10 AM Mass for their

Corporate Communion, followed by a blessing at the Rachel

Shrine, and later participation in our first-ever multi-cultural,

multi-lingual living rosary procession. More than 150

parishioners, representing every major cultural grouping

within the parish, were in attendance at the last-mentioned

event. The Knights also distributed in excess of 5,000

complimentary rosaries to parishioners at the end of all the

weekend Masses. Pete and Mae Signori undertook the

gargantuan task of untangling untold boxes of beads andplacing them into individual plastic bags. Many thanks!

Along with the Knights, students, parents, teachers, staff,

and family members from our great parish school, Old

Mission Montessori, also attended the same 10 AM Mass

marking the first Parish/School Mass of the academic year.

The school choir, under the direction of Lyndon Pugeda, was outstanding. Teachers and/or students also serve as

greeters, lectors, altar servers, and Eucharistic ministers..

Envelopes for separate donations to the parish school were

provided at all the Masses. Many thanks to all of you who

contributed so generously to the support of our great parish

school. I dont have to tell you how hard it is for families to

foot the bill for their childrens education these days.

Commitment to Catholic education requires ever greater

sacrifice in these difficult economic times.

Thanks and appreciation to the members of our Parish

Finance Councilin particular, Laurie Klahn, Joan

Giroux, Rich Miro, and Allen Hartmanas well as

Attorneys Wiley Jones and Richard Cornell, who providedvital information (and free consultations) to nearly 50

parishioners in a special workshop on wills and trusts.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank the two

anonymous donors for their generous contributions to our

parish family. One donor has contributed $15,500 towards

the purchase of equipment for our music ministry. The otherpresented us with a donation of $3,700 to help us to complete

our commitment to this years Annual Catholic Appeal. And

thanks to all of you who, on a daily basis, support our parish

family by your prayers and volunteer ministry.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

be persistent whether it is convenient or

    inconvenient... - 2 Timothy 4:2

It is not always convenient to be a goodsteward, especially when all the temptationsof our busy and materialistic world get in theway. Yet, we must be persistent even when itis inconvenient. This persistence marks the truefollower of Christ.

    BOOK OF THE WEEK

Encountering the Religious OtherNew Theology Review--May 2009

The New Theology Review is a quarterly publication ofLiturgical Press. In this issue, dedicated to the theme of thereligious other, five authors present four articles addressingthe contemporary issue of inter-religious dialogue.

James Fredericks writes about the Buddhist-Christian

dialogue in his article Solidarity with the Religious Other.Examples of his own experiences with such dialogue help us tothink more constructively about Buddhisms otherness andwelcome the religious other as our neighbor. Yvonne Haddad& Jane Smith discuss the Muslim-Christian interface in InSearch for a Common Word. These women note that muchof Muslim-Christian dialogue in the last half century has beeninformal and local. Recently more formal dialogues havegrown across Christian denominations & throughMuslim initiatives.

Lawrence Frizzell writes of the Christian & Jewish experi-ence in The Religious Other as Neighbor. Valuable lessonscan be learned from their painful history of antagonism.

And Jean-Pierre Ruiz presents From Disputation toDialogue in which Jews and Latinos pursue a newunderstanding of a convivencialiving together in Americaafter their complex history of grudging intolerance that beganin medieval Spain and survives today.

PERSISTENCEAs the end of the liturgical calendar draws near the liturgy

focuses more and more on the end of time. This week we arereminded that God's ultimate victory may be a long way off.Perseverance in prayer, proclamation, and work will beneeded along the way. The characters in today's readings canserve as role models for us on the long journey of disciple-ship.

In the reading from Exodus Joshua does not give up fight-ing, Moses does not give up praying, and Aaron and Hur donot give up supporting him until the victory is won. In the

Gospel story the widow does not stop begging until justice isdone. As the letter to Timothy urges, we are to "be persistentwhether it is convenient or inconvenient" until the coming of"Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead" (2 Timo-thy 4:2, 1). (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Muchas gracias,Padre Chuck (Carlos) Talley, ofm
