With VSS mainly providing supplemental and enrichment staffing during the school day and professional development for teachers, and our PTA providing stuff (like Kid Biz, supplies, field trips and assemblies), it’s a great partnership! The VSS program makes sure that each school in our district gets supplemental resources and to do so the Education Foundation needs to raise about $4 million each year. Even if it’s not the way you traditionally contribute financial support to Edison, I’d like to encourage you to make a direct donation to SMMEF in whatever amount you can manage – before the end of the calendar year. The Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp. has pledged to match our gifts, dollar for dollar up to $100,000. So $5.00 becomes $10.00, $25.00 becomes $50.00, etc. Even more than the size of the donation, it’s important to show business and community donors that the parents at each school are lending their support. Right now only 37 Edison families have made individual donations. We know that a direct donation is not the way that all our families support the school. But nearly all of us participate in some way in the different PTA fundraisers (Jogathon, Fall Festival, Blue Dog, food sales, spirit wear, etc.). So our PTA decided that one of the important ways we can contribute to SMMEF is by giving 20% of the profits from our PTA fundraising to SMMEF. For example, we just had a very successful Blue Dog sale and are preparing a check for $2,222.00 for SMMEF. And with the Dun and Bradstreet Credibility Corp. Matching grant, our contribution will actually net $4,444.00 for SMMEF! When we figure out the profits from Fall Festival, another check will be headed to SMMEF from the Edison community – also doubled with the matching grant! What we’d like to work on now is to increase the number of Edison families who have contributed directly to SMMEF – and donating during the matching grant period is the perfect way to do this. Won’t you consider putting a check (made out to SMMEF) or a few dollars in an envelope with your name on it and dropping it in the SMMEF box in the front office during the month of November? Please consider an amount that is meaningful to you. The exact amount of your gift is not reported publicly. But please let us know your name (even if you do not want your name listed publicly) so that we can accurately reflect the number of families who are supporting SMMEF. Consider that supporting SMMEF supports all our bilingual instructional assistants, our literacy coach, our theater program, our K-2 choral music program, many of our technology programs, and a host of other great things for Edison kids. It’s a great return on your investment and every dollar makes a difference! Remember: Our Campus Opens at 7:45 a.m. -- Please do not drop off children before that time. To increase safety in the mornings, beginning in December, the front gate to campus will not open until 7:45 am. Morning child care remains open at 7:00 am and parents with children in child care can enter through the code-operated pedestrian gate on Virginia Avenue. ELAC Input for Site Plan Site Council Members Lisa Proft and Pilar Guzman will be presenting on the Site Plan at the ELAC Meeting on November 12 and soliciting parent input on school improvement plans and priorities. Looking for Donations of Board Games and DVDs Do you have some gently used board games or G-rated children’s movies that you no longer need and could donate to Edison? On rainy days and days that are just too hot to play outside, we like to offer indoor recreational activities for the children and our stash of games and movies is running low. We’d appreciate any donations of games and movies appropriate for the 5-11-year-old crowd! Fall Festival/Día de los Muertos Celebration THANK YOU to our amazing parent (and grandparent!) volunteers and our Edison staff for producing such a great Fall Festival/ Día de los Muertos celebration! You are amazing and you created a wonderful cultural and community event for our families and the community! Kindergarten Orientations for 2015-2016 are now underway! If you have a younger child who will be five years old before September 1, 2015, please return the pink form that went home last week by November 15 to hold a space. All others interested in Kindergarten next year, should call the office to book at tour (310) 828-0335, ext. 61-349. Site Council Ballots are included with this Wednesday’s packet. ANUNCIOS
