O God, you search me and you know me. All my ways lie open to your gaze. When I walk or lie down, you go before me Ever the maker and keeper of my days. You know my resting and my rising. You discern my purpose from afar You are with me beyond my understanding In every moment of life and death, you are. For you created me and shaped me, Gave me life within my mother's womb. For the wonder of who I am, I praise you God of my present, my past and future too. Although I feel your hand upon me, Still I search for shelter from your light. There is nowhere on earth I can escape you Even the darkness is radiant in your sight.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    THE LESSONS

FIRST READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12-20 The people sit.

A Reading from Paul's First letter to the Church in Corinth.

12“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” 17But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. The Word of the Lord.

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ. 43Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law

and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Priest The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Rev. Derrick Hill A period of silence may be observed THE CREED

All stand, as you are able

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

  • 5

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN: “Take, O Take Me as I Am” John L. Bell

led by Kathy Tugman and Tarbell Patten

We pray for Michael our Presiding Bishop, Brian our Bishop, all priests, deacons and lay ministers in your church. We call to you, O Lord. And we are listening. We pray for people in every corner of the world, especially for those who lack adequate food, shelter and hope. Call us to compassionate action. We pray for people that have suffered natural devastation, effects of war, or plague. We call to you, O Lord. And we are listening. We pray for those close to our hearts who suffer from illness, anxiety; who face challenges and transitions; who struggle with your will in their lives. We pray today for Bill, Connie, Susan, Kelly, Keith, David and Jaylin, the Hutcherson family, Marie, Dick, Pat, Molly, Tarbell, Brenda, Woody, Jody, Tonda, Camille, the Sisson and Rutherford families. We call to you, O Lord. And we are listening. We pray for those who will be born this day, that they will be embraced by loving communities. We pray for those who are dying and those who now rest in your eternal embrace especially Zane Hutcherson, brother of Lamar Hutcherson, and for Jospehine Lea Wilkerson, mother of Bill Wilkerson who passed away in December of COVID, and Jody Mowrer, father of John Mowrer who passed away on Saturday, January 16. Are there those you wish to name? We call to you, O Lord. And we are listening.

CONFESSION OF SIN Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

    THE HOLY COMMUNION OFFERTORY SENTENCE

OFFERTORY: “Domine Deus, Rex Coelestis” (from Gloria) Antonio Vivaldi

Laura Wilkerson, soprano Alexandra Ricks, violin Philip Newton, piano from Christmas 2012

O Thou, our Lord God, King of heaven, God the Father all powerful.

    (Sung in Latin)

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (EOW Prayer 2)

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Presider We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we say: Presider and People Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Presider continues Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself, yet we were heedless of

  • 8

his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with Blessed Timothy and all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

    THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, People and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

    THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

FRACTION ANTHEM Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

    DISTRIBUTION

In the celebration of the eucharist, we experience the real presence of Christ, not only in the bread and wine that are blessed and shared but also in the Word proclaimed and broken open in homily, in the community gathered as the body of Christ, in song and prayer. This real presence is always in tension with real absence. We glimpse Christ’s presence, getting a taste of the heavenly banquet, yet on this side of the grave we never experience the fullness of that presence. Real absence draws us forward to the time when we shall see God face to face. Real absence makes room for the mystery of God whose presence we can neither compel nor control.

    Let us pray together:

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC VISITORS Snowe and Al: Even as we shelter in place, we send you forth as visitors from this congregation to call and share God’s love and care with Marylu Fowler, Molly Miles, Joan Williams, Evelyn Vanderford, Will Mary Pratt, and Mel Brooke. May you be strengthened by this ministry, and, may those you call feel God’s presence with them in their time of need.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
