10.4: America the World Power
The Philippines
• McKinley claimed we would Christianize them (but most Filipinos were already Christian…)
• 1899 the Filipinos rebelled, but we stopped them.
China• Most Chinese cities were being influenced
by one or more European countries– John Hay’s Open Door notes argued that
everything should be done to keep Chinese trade open to the U.S.
• In 1900, U.S. and European troops stopped the Chinese “Boxer Rebellion” (who protested European influence)
TR the World Leader• A canal (water way) through Central
America would greatly cut down travel time for military and commercial ships
• U.S. helped Panama revolt against Colombia, Panama paid us back by letting us build the Canal there.
TR the World Leader• U.S. “dollar diplomacy:” the govt. supported
American businessmen as they did business in Latin America
TR the World Leader• Monroe Doctrine (1823): European countries
needed to stay out of Latin American countries– “Roosevelt Corollary” (1904): Now the U.S. would
use its military to “protect” Latin American countries
“Speak Softly and Carry a
Big Stick”
Wilson and Mexico• Wilson only supported
countries with democratic election– He supported the elected
Mexican leaders in 1915• Wilson had troops (led by John J.
Pershing) to hunt down the Mexican rebel leader Pancho Villa• This event set a standard for
sending troops into other countries to solve problems
