GETTING TO KNOW ‘THE BRICK HOTEL’THE BACKGROUND HISTORY

This single-detached, two-and-a-half storey “Commercial Hotel” now turned private residence renamed the “Brick Hotel” was built by Matthew Laidlaw in 1852 and, for a short time, Laidlaw operated a public house that became known as the “Commercial Hotel” – Which has been recognized as one of the first commercially operated hotels in Meadowvale Mississauga. Laidlaw left the hotel business to run the general store that James Ward had built in 1848. After Laidlaw’s departure, the hotel passed through the ownership of several people, including Moses Strong, Joseph Kearney and Christopher Rutledge. John Callaghan was the last person to operate a hotel in the building around the turn of the century. Prohibition swept through the country shortly afterwards (“The Ontario Temperance Act” was enacted in 1916 in Province of Ontario later repealed in 1927), and public houses, which relied on the liquor trade to stay in business, were soon forced to close. William Lambe, general store owner and postmaster, converted the renamed “Brick Hotel” into a private residence. Around 1950 the original two-storey veranda was removed and in 2006 it was faithfully reconstructed by the current owner based on historical documentation and photo’s.

History of Meadowvale Village

The village of Meadowvale was established in the 1820s by Irish immigrants from New York state. In the village’s early years, the main industry was milling, with the mills drawing power from the Credit River. Gooderham and Worts owned and operated many businesses in the village in the 1860s and 1870s, including a mill. The multi-lane, controlled access MacDonald-Cartier Freeway, also known as Kings Highway 401, was opened south of Meadowvale Village in 1959. In 1968, Meadowvale was incorporated into the new Town of Mississauga. In the 1970s, farmland west of the original Meadowvale Village was developed into a series of subdivisions that make up much of present-day Meadowvale. This area has continued to expand ever since, and now fills most of the northwest corner of Mississauga. Meadowvale village is located adjacent to the largest business park area in Mississauga, with the second largest being located in between Meadowvale Village and Meadowvale along the Highway 401 corridor, where numerous major corporations have recently located their offices, factories and research and development facilities

PICKING AN IDEASHORT LIST OF PROPOSED USES

Provided below is a short list of proposed future uses. It should be worth noting that the following uses are nothing than mere conjecture at this time and that viability is subjected to approval from the municipal zoning bylaws, the conservation authorities, the heritage planning committee and obtaining neccessary building permits if any.

1) Private Club - A club is an association of two or more people united by a common interest or goal. A service club, for example, exists for voluntary or charitable activities; there are clubs devoted to hobbies and sports, social activities clubs, political and religious clubs, and so forth.

2) Corporate Housing - Corporate housing is a term in the travel industry meaning renting out a furnished apartment, condo, or house on a temporary basis to individuals, military personnel, or corporations as an alternative to a traditional hotel or an extended hotel stay. Corporate housing provides complete temporary housing solutions within a stable residential setting unlike extended stay hotels, which are surrounded by an open parking lot and are filled entirely by transient guests. Understanding these unique and sometimes subtle differences between corporate housing and extended stay hotels can save a company thousands of dollars and provide guests with a more pleasant and positive stay. There is a growing market for corporate housing is for

government workers. This includes military personnel, federal workers, and government contractors.

3) Bed and Breakfast Accomodations - The typical bed and breakfast operation consists with a private residence, with rooms available for guests who pay for accommodation and breakfast. A seemingly endless variety of entrepreneurial B & Bs are available for the travelling public. Some attract visitors with quaint, historic homes filled with antiques and collectibles ,while others focus on back to nature experiences and the calm of a remote rural setting. Bed and breakfast operations will continue to be an important accommodation option for the

PAGE 03

Page 7: 1051 Old Derry Rd W

vacationing public. Owners of bed and breakfast operations can seek a rating for their operation through the local bed and breakfast association.

4) Boutique Hotel - The boutique hotel sector has grown in stature within both urban and recreational marketplaces. A trend away from standardized hotel accommodation in favour of these unique establishments is now well established in Ontario. Boutique hotels are often focused on the luxury accommodation market and boast lifestyle preferences, such as wellness and spa facilities. While definitions vary as to what constitutes a boutique hotel, size is a key factor. Travellers are demanding more than mere comfort and convenience prevalent in standardized hotels. Boutique hotels typically have a unique wow factor to set them apart, be it architecture and design, meticulous attention to detail and/or personalized service. Often, boutique hotels are situated in downtown or in-demand recreational locations close to attractions and services, and need not provide restaurant, meeting or other facilities usual to brand name hotels.

Picking an idea is the first step to deciding how you will plan to use this property. It should be noted that depending on what use you will embark in will be dependent

on the city zoning and planning.

BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMODATIONSA CLOSER LOOK WITH TIME MAGAZINE

Bed, Breakfast And BeyondBy: Valerie Marchant, Tom Witkowski, Jyl Bension, HarrietMonday, November 18, 2002

Americans have a wide array of lodgings to choose from when they take a vacation: high-rise hotels, rustic resorts, motels by the bay. Yet more and more people are flocking to bed-and-breakfast inns, the most old-fashioned homes away from home. Just 20 years ago, there were only 1,000 B and Bs, as they are nicknamed, scattered throughout the country. Today there are more than 28,000 serving more than 50 million guests each year. What's the appeal? Bed-and-breakfasts, often situated in elegant, historic homes, tap into everyone's fantasy of living another life. Many have been lovingly renovated with period decorations, inviting visitors to step back in time. Others carry a theme throughout the house. Since on average they have only seven or eight rooms, they offer peace and quiet, a rare commodity in the average home. The hosts, who nearly always live on the premises, provide plenty of coddling. They will recommend local attractions, help with dinner reservations, often provide an afternoon tea or glass of sherry--and, yes, prepare a delicious homemade breakfast.

Prices at bed-and-breakfasts, which average $104 to $133 a night, depending on the region, rival the rates of good hotels. While some 10,000 B and Bs are private homes in which the owners offer a room or two, most are serious businesses, complete with websites and toll-free numbers. The clientele tends to be couples, most of them affluent and well educated. Most are tourists or people who are in town to visit family or to celebrate a special occasion. Bed-and-breakfasts are popular with many foreign travelers, mostly from Britain, Germany, Canada, France and Australia, who have grown up going to B and Bs in their own countries.
