Artichoke Invitational Half Moon Bay High School Saturday October 7. 2017 2.33 miles • = earned medal The Broncos had another successful weekend at the races with a fine team showing at the Artichoke Invitational. 62 runners finished races, another 9 injured runners came for support, and hordes of parents helped with the driving. We ended up with 21 individual medals, 15 PR’s, 9 additions to the All- Time list for this course, and the JV Girls won another invitational. Not a bad day at all. The entire day also showcased a series of individual improvements as many Broncos exhibited the new levels of performance. Yes, workouts do work. Of course, the ensuing beach party was a big attraction too. Even with the Homecoming dance peeling off a chunk of runners from attending the party, we still had a great crowd of happy beach splashers at the end of a good day. LARGE SCHOOL FROSH BOYS 1. The JV girls won another invitational, which was a bit of a surprise; however, the bigger surprise was the contribution by different faces,.

The big eye-opener was Hannah unleashing a hitherto only suspected intensity and zoomed up our depth chart to be our team leader today. Amanda re-asserted herself into the team picture with an aggressive race. Kara has been quietly improving all season. Liz was the second big shocker, taking a top position after having been on the injured list all season with limited workouts.

! Hannah wowed the Northgate crowd with her breakthrough race today. Workouts work.

JV regulars Sydney and Selina were solid if not spectacular. Our top six girls all earned individual medals. Andy in 21st, despite her good race, was a heartbreak one place away from her own medal. Lola and Corinne started slowly and then came on strong at the end to get nearer to the front of our pack, and very near the top 1/3 of the race. Olivia had a consistent race. Rebekah played it more conservatively today after last week’s uneven race. Francesca’s knee was acting up, but she was able to power through and complete the race. Sarah stayed in her safe zone today. Julie, after 8 weeks of rehab, finally got into a race and was happy to be able to compete and finish without injury.

This team was down a boy or two, due to the SAT and some promotions to varsity. Mike J. took charge for us today, and zipped in to grab a medal. Max recovered from his mid-race slump to sprint to his own medal. Eric had a good PR, and got a medal too. Ron was right behind him. Lorenzo bore down and gave us a decent race. Lucas never did get fully untracked today. Akira was in safe mode. Ryan is still recovering from recent foot soreness. Rohith wins the biggest improvement award with an astronomical PR. Mason chugged in with determination.

! Rohith on his way to the biggest PR of the day. Workouts work.

with her sore leg. Regardless, spirits were high come race time. Things were looking good early in the race, and even better when Sarah took the lead for a good part of the latter portion of the race. Olina made a strong move over the top of the hill to move up into the top 10 of the race. Katrina led Jessie and Viviana in our second group. Sarah finished a strong 2nd and with a top spot on the All-Time list. Olina also made the list. Our top 4 girls all earned medals. We took a very nice second place and to top it off, we finally beat College Park this season.

! Olina continues her PR binge this season. Workouts work.

This process has been

slow, but today we saw some movement towards that direction. Michael W. once again took care of business with a top spot, even flirting with the lead mid-race. Michael L. continues to work hard to move more towards the front of races, and earned a medal for his effort. Today’s top contribution to the team goal came from Thomas, who apparently has turned the corner and made a good move mid-race to be our new #3 runner today. Sanjay, Sam, and Patrick PR’d, but still were back in the team picture. Jack was close in his return to varsity after a stint on the JV squad. The top 5 finish is heartening, but College Park still has our number. The challenge remains for us to tighten up the team pack by the end of the season.

! Sam gets the full benefit of support - - Alumnus Steve Lizzarago; the Anderson family; teammates Mitch and Eric. Way to go Broncos.

COMBINED RESULTS These are results of all the races (FS, JV, V) of both small and large schools, sorted by team time. Even with Isabelle sitting out, our girls’ team looked very good today. As a no te , the Monta Vis ta (Cupertino) team is currently ranked 6th overall in the Central Coast Section.

! Mitch watches the sun finally dip below the waves, which signifies the finale of the team picnic each year.

Notes and Commentary: The whole day was a example of team unity and efficiency. Getting there: The carpool was smooth with sufficient vehicles, and the divergent groups of Homecoming and party were sorted out. The traffic to Half Moon Bay had no snarls or glitches of note. Team area: Our snack table was a force to be reckoned with, groaning under the burdenof so much food laid out for team consumption. The setup went well, and the takedown and area cleanup was accomplished at record pace. Races: Hard to argue with all those medals and PR’s and All-Time lists and high team placings.

Attendance: Getting 71 running Broncos, along with attendant siblings and families, to the meet was great. Homecoming and SAT were other concerns, but the Beach Party allure held its own well. And the beach: Great weather, and marvelous organization on the part of the parents. We really do have a tremendous support crew this year, and today was a remarkable display of that support. And we’re not done yet: We have one last carpool next week, the big road trip to Mt. SAC coming up, our last DAL Center Meet, and then the championship season of the DAL C h a m p i o n s h i p a n d t h e N C S Championships.

! Coach Ruth spent the afternoon exhorting the athletes in their final sprint to the finish.

! Lots of parents with cameras at the end of the picnic.
