2016 CATHOLIC APPEAL

Next weekend, the Catholic Appeal will be

announced in all parishes throughout the

Archdiocese. Please be sure to take home next

week’s bulletin, which includes an insert with some

helpful information about how the Catholic Appeal

directly benefits our parish.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

CCD classes resume on February 23rd of this week.

Our 2nd graders have been preparing to receive the

Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on

Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10:30-11:45AM in the lower

church. Please join us with your prayers that the

students and their families will experience the joy of

God’s mercy and healing love in this beautiful

sacrament.

With Lent in full swing, our students will walk

with Jesus as He shows the world what true love

looks like all the way to the cross and to His

triumphant rise to life on Easter morning! In a small

way we can join with Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice by

giving up/say no to some small comforts like food,

activities or habits that will help us to be able to say

no when we are tempted to be selfish or to demand

our own way. After all, Christ said no to His own

way during the Agony in the Garden for our sakes,

so we could rise again to new life in Heaven! We

encourage families to pray the Sorrowful mysteries

of the rosary as a family and remember to feed the

poor by filling the Lenten Rice bowls and pray every

day!

Michelle Solomon, Director of Religious Ed.

SACRED HAPPENINGS

Sacred Heart parish is delighted to learn that Maura

Iversen has been awarded a Fullbright

Scholarship―she will be in Sweden for the first

three months of 2017. Maura is enjoying her

sabbatical in North Carolina at this time.

PASTORAL CARE TO THE SICK AND

HOMEBOUND WORKSHOP – SAVE THE

DATE

Ministry of Care involves reaching out to those

who are unable to attend Mass or participate in

parish life due to age, infirmity, illness or

recuperation. Each week we learn of more and more

parishioners from the Sacred Heart community who

are in need of our care. A minister of care spends

one or two hours a week, or month, visiting these

parishioners in their homes and/or in local nursing

homes. As a minister of care you serve as a vital

pastoral connection between the parish and the sick

and homebound – you bring the spiritual and healing

comfort of the Lord with you in the gift of the

Blessed Sacrament!

Both current ministers of communion, and those

wishing to become ministers of communion, are

invited to this ministry. Formal training for pastoral

visitation and the distribution of Communion to the

sick is required. A two-day, twelve hour training

workshop is being offered by the Archdiocese of

Boston at Our Lady’s Church on Saturdays,

April 2 and 9, 2016 from 9:00 to 3:00 PM. Please

consider if you are being called to this ministry, or if

you would like more information, please call Marie

Buckley at (617) 969-4021.

COLLABORATIVE RETREAT FOR THE

YEAR OF MERCY The Sacred Heart/Our Lady's Collaborative is

offering the first of three retreats on the Year of

Mercy on Sunday, February 28th from 3:00-

6:00PM. at Our Lady's Church. This first retreat will

focus on the theme of mercy and forgiveness, and

will include prayer, presentations, small group

conversation, and the opportunity for the Sacrament

of Reconciliation. Sign-up sheets can be found at the

doors of the church. You can also email Brian

Romer Niemiec ([email protected]) to

register or with any questions.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN TRAINING

A Virtus Training session of Protecting God’s

Children Program for Adults has been scheduled at

Our Lady Help of Christians Church on Sunday,

March 6 at 1pm in the Lower Church Hall. All those

who are volunteers here at Sacred Heart and have

not yet taken this program are urged to attend. All

adults who are interested in the safety of children

who have not yet attended this course are also

welcome.

SOUP AND STATIONS AT OUR LADYS

Mark your calendar: The annual Soup and Stations

will be held at Our Lady’s on Friday, March 18th.

(Please note the date change from the Lenten Flyer.)

The simple supper will be served in the lower church

hall from 6:00-7:00; stations will be in the church

from 7:00 to 7:30. These stations are suitable for all

ages, especially children. This is a great family

Lenten event. Soup and macaroni and cheese are

served. Please reply to [email protected] to let

us know if you are coming.

THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL Pope Francis

Before all else, the Gospel invites us to respond to

the God of love who saves us, to see God in others

and to go forth from ourselves to seek the good of

others. (Paragraph 39)

REQUEST FROM ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Our Lady Help of Christians has received two

requests for furniture:

1. A portacrib or bassinette: – A family in need is

celebrating the arrival of a new baby! The mom had

a c-section, so a higher portacrib or bassinette would

be appreciated.

2. A small table: so a person could eat or read/

write—Approximately 36-40” high and no wider

than 27” or so.

Please call Dan Foley at: (508) 272-0017 or Paul

McGuire at (617) 244-8185.

ENTERTAINING ANGELS

The Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and Parish

Support is pleased to welcome the Catholic

Hospitality Training Institute for a workshop

called Entertaining Angels this February. The

institute exists to empower parishes for the work of

evangelization, from transforming the environment

of the parish office to using the right words when

interacting with guests and parishioners. This

workshop is a one-day hospitality training seminar

aimed at helping each member of your team be an

open door to Jesus Christ. The training is geared

toward “first contact” staff and volunteers. Our first

priority is to the mission of the Catholic Church to

make disciples. A visitor may decide whether or not

to stay at your parish in as little as the first three

minutes of their visit, including time in the parking

lot. It is vital that they experience a welcoming

place. This training provides preparation for

receiving others in the name of Jesus Christ.

Participants will develop confidence and an idea of

what to say to parish visitors. Everyone who attends

will receive monthly follow up videos and

reflections for one year.

Date: February 27, 2016

Time: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Place: Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, 920

SIGNINGS

Both myself (a Deaf priest) and Fr. John Sassani are

pleased to announce that the Deaf Catholic

Community will be visiting Our Lady Help of

Christians Parish for the 4:00pm Mass this Saturday,

February 20th. This is an exciting opportunity for

Our Lady Help of Christians, the other parish of the

Newton Collaborative to know more about the Deaf

Catholic Community of the Archdiocese of Boston.

The community has its own American Sign

Language Mass held at 11:00am on Sundays at

Sacred Heart Parish since they relocated from St.

Theresa's Church in Watertown in 2003. For those

who are new to having the Deaf visiting, you will be

seeing a sign language interpreter who will be

translating spoken English to signs for the Deaf

Catholic members and a voice interpreter will be

voicing in English during my homily while I use

sign language. This may seem like a whole new

experience for you. According to statistics from

research studies at Gallaudet University and many

national organizations associated with religious

programs for the Deaf, “ninety-six percent of deaf

people have no religious affiliation.” The simple

reason is that most ecclesial communities offer no

access to parish life for folks who communicate

through sign language. That is why the Archdiocese

of Boston has the Office of the Deaf Apostolate

(bostondeafcatholic.org) to ensure inclusion for the

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Catholics in all facets of

Church life. As the Director of the Boston Deaf

Apostolate, myself and my office staff assist parishes

in becoming welcoming to the Deaf in their locale,

supporting archdiocesan agencies in making their

activities inclusive of and accessible to the Deaf,

offering direct pastoral ministry to Deaf persons

throughout the Archdiocese, and supporting the

Church's ecumenical efforts as it relates to the Deaf.

We are really looking forward to visiting Our Lady

Help of Christians Parish and meeting their

parishioners!

In Christ, Fr. Shawn Carey,

Director of the Boston Deaf Apostolate
