Writing an answer to Question 2.The writer says, “In the period of which we speak, there reigned in the cities a stench barely conceivable to us modern men and women.” The words “stench” and “inconceivable” make the reader think of an overpowering smell. The writer uses a long sentence that begins “The streets stank of manure…” and lists lots of smells in the same sentence. This shows that the writer is trying to overwhelm the reader with an array of smells, suggesting that France and Paris is not a nice place at the time.
