310TH ANNUAL DESIGN + BUILD COMPETITION
Welcome to the
Greater Chicago Food
Depository’s
largest one-day food
drive of the year.
Canstruction Chicago, in
partnership with AIA Chicago,
celebrates the 10th annual
design and build competition
benefiting the Greater Chicago
Food Depository. Sixteen
participating teams from local
Chicago architecture, engineering
& construction firms participate to
give back.
Canstruction, Inc. is a nonprofit
organization, founded in 1992
and headquartered in Atlanta,
GA. Events are hosted around the
world to help raise awareness
of hunger issues through the
creation of structures made
entirely out of canned food.
This unique competition allows
teams to use their design skills to
create incredible structures using
canned goods all while fighting
hunger in Chicago. All canned
goods used in the structures are
donated to the Greater Chicago
Food Depository. This event will
bring in nearly 100,000 pounds
of shelf stable food for the Food
Depository’s network of 650 soup
kitchens, food pantries, shelters
and programs throughout Cook
County. Canstruction Chicago is
the Food Depository’s largest one-
day food drive that helps to put
food on the table for the 812,000
men, women and children they
serve each year.

Description // Our sculpture, entitled Eroding Hunger, is designed as three eroding pillars. Designed with daring structural appearance in mind, we hoped to evoke the precarious situation of hungry citizens in our community. Throughout the design process we studied volumes that would not stand in isolation. Yet, when supported by others, the group stands together. The shape opens toward the audience, exposing the sculpture’s interconnected structure as a nod to how we must
support each other’s efforts to erode and eradicate hunger in our community.

Description // In recent decades, the entire river system has steadily gained a vocal collective of advocates, all looking to reconnect the daily experience of the City with the dynamic and changing life of our rivers. New layers of urban recreation and a growing interest in the eco-logical dimensions of the waterway began to change the perception and increase appreciation of our rivers as a valuable natural resource.
Inspired by the Great Rivers Chicago vision (a collaboration between the City of Chicago, Metropolitan Planning Council, Ross Barney Architects, and a host of others), this canscuplture embodies the future for the Des Plaines, Calumet, and Chicago rivers.
Our hope is to spur advocacy forreimaging the industrial landscape, increasing open space & recreational opportunities in underserved areas of Chicago’s south and west sides, enabling community-based park & natural area stewardship & recreational programs, and increasing access to the riverfronts through connected trails & directional signs, among other features. This hope mirrors that of the GCFD: mobilize the public to end hunger and appreciate the resources we take for granted each day.

Description // As the GCFD’s goal is to fight hunger one meal, one person at a time, our structure focuses on acknowledging that one person within our society. Our structure is based on a Matryoshka Doll, also known as a Russian nesting doll. Traditional dolls are often designed to reveal layers of expression, emotion and imagery. Inspired by this, each layer of our structure represents a different fold of society, your co-workers, neighbors, and friends, while the most inner doll represents the hunger hidden within. As 2nd-most
