Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu Greetings to friends andfamily of Nelson Central School.

Thanks to everyone who supported the school crosscountry event last week and thanks also for helping to keep

the course free of people that made it easier and safer for

children to get around the course.

You can view a brief slide show of the event by going to

the school website and clicking on Events and Photos. Thanks to Tania OMeagher for preparing the slide show

    for us.

Swine FluThe Ministry of Health expects a community spread ofSwine Flu t o occur and have advised schools of this.

Anyone who has recent ly travelled overseas and is ill withinfluenza symptoms is advised to phone their GP or

    Healthline (0800 611 116) for medical advice.

Do not turn up at a hospital or medical centre before doing

this as you can spread germs to other people.

Signs and symptoms of influenza include fever, cough,

sore throat, stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills andfatigue. Some people also experience diarrhea andvomiting.

Hand hygiene is still the single most effective measure inprotecting yourself. Wash your hands with soap and water

    and dry t hem thoroughly.

Alcohol-based cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching

your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread this way.

Practise good cough and sneeze etiquette. This means

covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when youcough or sneeze, and disposing of the t issue in a lined

rubbish bin with a lid or plast ic bag.

Sick people should stay home until they are well, rather

than going to school or work. Try to avoid contact with

sick people and reduce time spent in crowded settings. Ifyou become sick, stay home for seven days after your

symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for

24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep you frominfecting others.

Fees and donationsThere has been a steady trickle of fees this year and we

look forward to more payments as soon as you can do so.We have EFTPOS at the office if that will make it easier

    Social Skills

How do We React to Conflict. As part of our social skills programmes all classes are discussing conflict management skills

that create win/win situations for students, teachers, parents and caregivers.

When involved in a conflict there are various responses that are adopted.

    The three main responses are:

Denial Aggression Problem solvingAs a school we are discussing all approaches and which are the most effective for all involved.

In order to make the concepts clearer for the children all approaches are associated with acreature. Over the next few weeks we will share these with you.

Parent Meeting - Human Rights in Education

School LibraryThursday 18 June at 7:30 pm

This year we started working towards the status of a RightsRespecting School. The goal of the programme is that we all

should do more to recognise and respect the rights of

everyone with whom we share the planet.

In January staff undertook professional development to help

us shift from being a rules driven organisation to one thatoperates on the basis of understanding and respect.

Student s have been involved in learning about rights andresponsibilities and some of the major international

organisations and agreements that underpin thinking in theseareas.

What we are offering now is an opportunity for parents/caregivers to learn more about what we are doing with

children and for you to determine how you can help us.

Ced Simpson from Human Rights InEducation- Mana Tika Tangata will talk to us aboutthe work he does with schools in the School Library on

Thursday 18 June at 7:30 pm everyone is welcome tocome along and learn how we can work together to support

    the learning children are doing.

    3/4

On Sunday 7th June a group of parents and children from school went for a walk to Whispering Falls in

the Aniseed valley. On the walk there was a humungous swing bridge and if you jumped side to side itwould sway side to side so much you would bang into the net. It didnt hurt but it did shake you. It wasfun, I really liked it. At the end of the valley we crossed another bridge and walked up a steep hill to theWhispering Falls. There wasnt much water but it was still awesome to look at. We walked further up thehill to the top where everyone sat down and had lunch. After lunch we all started back down the hill andback to the car park. It seemed to be quicker going back. A few of us played by the river waiting for ourparents to arrive. I think it is a good walk to take your kids on, I liked it heaps.
