Hi Key Clubers, It’s time to get excited! Our new year is in full swing so don’t be afraid to set some goals. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break. Don’t let your holiday spirit end, take that energy and transfer it to Key Club and your love for service. HAPPY 2014! SMART goals Specific: A goal should be described as thoroughly as possible. A goal of recruiting more members is vague; a goal of increasing membership by 25% is specific..

Measurable: An effective goal must be measurable. In the first example we used membership numbers, which are measurable but what about, “make meetings more fun” or “be a better student?” These goals are not measurable as stated but objects of achieving these goals can be identified more clearly to make them measurable. For example, instead of only saying you want to be a better student, you could identify one aspect of being a strong student you wish to improve. You might instead say you will spend a minimum of one hour each weekend reviewing your notes from the previous week.

Achievable: There's an art to goal setting that revolves around the goal's difficulty. A goal too easy is not energizing. A goal too difficult seems hopeless. Both too easy and too difficult are goal setting no-no's. Set the level of challenge somewhere in between. A good way to decide that a goal is achievable but challenging is to visualize yourself reaching the goal. Can you see yourself there? Are you energized by seeing the vision? If both of these are not present, revisit your goal.

Realistic: Do you have the knowledge, skill set, and competency to reach your goal? If your goal involves a major service project, do you know all you should know about the budgetary needs, materials required, community in need, and your member interest? If not, perhaps your first goal should be to gather this information.

Time: Setting a deadline provides necessary positive tension to give you the energy to get on with it. The time frame you select should be realistic.

T-Shirts

The Hunger Games themed long sleeves T-shirts are $20. On the front is the Mockingjay but instead of carrying an arrow it’s holding a key to represent Key Club. On the back of the shirt is, “I volunteer,” which also comes from the books famous quote, “I volunteer as tribute.” Email me at [email protected] if you would like one or if you would like to make a large order for your club.

COMING SOON! In addition to the Hunger Games T-shirts there will be the new Catching Fire T-shirts designed by Sara Thomas. Sara Thomas our last Lt. Governor from Kodiak High School designed the original Hunger Games T-shirts. The T-shirts were such a successes we decided to not stop there, which resulted in the new Catching Fire T-shirts. Let me know via email if you would like to pre-order Catching Fire T-shirts, [email protected]. I hope you are all as excited as I am to see the new design. If you buy one of theses T’s I’m sure you will be one of the flyest looking kids in your school.

DCON

The 65th annual District Convention 2014 is almost here. It’s that time of year again to be planning for DCON which will be held on April 4th through the 6th. This year’s unique theme is “Level Up In Service,” a Nintendo game theme. It’s time to put your game face on and show some division spirit. First things first, your club needs to register at http://pnwkeyclub.weebly.com. Key Clubbers, Kiwanis, and advisors are all welcome. What to expect? PNW Executive Board

PNW Secretary Hakikat Bains [email protected]

Hello, Division AYS! I am so excited and ready as your PNW District Secretary this year. I am already loving my term!. I joined Key Club as a freshman because I simply wanted to be involved in high school and Key Club was the cool club to join. All the seniors were involved in Key Club and it was a club that accepted me as a freshman. Soon, through service projects and meetings, I grew to love this organization and became determined to make a difference myself in Key Club. Other than my Key Club life, I like to do lots of random things during my free time. That includes being outdoors, reading, painting, traveling, movies, photography, music, writing, and baking! I love to bake anything and everything. Although, I am never successful in making it turn out tasty. My favorite food is cake. No one can go wrong with cake. My ideal career would be to become a dentist. A dentist who secretively loves cake. Also, I plan on continuing my involvement in the K-Family in my future!

PNW Governor Trang Tran [email protected]

PNW Treasure Eric Grewal [email protected]

I joined Key Club so that I could get more involved in the community and do my part by using my leadership talent to promote service. The K-Family has a large presence in my community, but it wasn’t until I joined the club that I learned how great of a program Key Club is. My friends dragged me to my first meeting, and after hearing about KCI, I was enticed by the concept of service leadership and decided to involve myself fully in the club. Outside of Key Club, I have a strong passion for academics and try to keep myself busy by learning about the latest new innovations and developments in society. I’m also very interested in finance and watch the stock market avidly. Other than that, I enjoy reading, golfing, working out, and listening to music. I hope to continue my career and attend a university to study a science or technology-related field, so that I can become a researcher at the cutting edge of innovation and development. I also hope to use my leadership skills in the industry so that I can excel to the highest levels of corporate office. Most importantly, though, I don’t want to lose sight of service and plan on continuing to serve, whether it’s through Circle K, Kiwanis, or another charitable organization.

PNW Editor Sara Thomas [email protected]

AK all day! Hello Key Clubbers from Div. AYS! It is a privilege to be working with you another year as the District Editor of the Pacific Northwest. Key Club has been a passion of mine since I first helped out at Key Club events in grade school. My mom is the high school advisor and at a young age I was exposed to the thrill of service. I served as the Lit. Gov. of Div. AYS my junior year and now serve as the District Editor for the Pacific Northwest. My job allows me to work with Key Clubbers across the state, region, and country. I also compose a quarterly magazine to represent the District and administer training. In my free time I enjoy adventuring around Kodiak, hiking, bonfires on the beach and photography. I believe coffee is its own food group and consider myself committed, not addicted, to it. My goals for this term are to work closely with club members and officers providing them with the resources they need. I have made a Youtube account specifically for that so members can subscribe to the District Editor of PNW and see tutorials, updates and more specifically for them. In my goals external to Key Club I am striving to become a full time missionary with a degree in Intercultural Studies. Please! Let me know how I can help you and your Key Club reach it's fullest potential. I cannot wait for another year of service with Div. AYS.

Our Governor is a busy busy bee. She has been working hard on the Eliminate project. I wish her all the best. Her efforts in Key Club will never go unnoticed, as she has been an inspirational and ambitious Governor. Her leadership skills have proven to be that of a great role model. High-Five girl YOU are awesome!

Every nine minutes, a newborn baby dies from tetanus. It is excruciating, and a mother can only watch. The baby’s sensitivity to light, sound and contact prevents even the comfort of her touch. You can help protect that connection. The worldwide Kiwanis family is joining forces with UNICEF for The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. It’s time to do your part.

To eliminate MNT, more than 100 million women must be immunized to protect them and their future babies. This comes at a cost of roughly US$240 million. Millions of dollars have already been committed. But a US$110 million funding gap remains. With The Eliminate Project, our goal is to fill this gap by raising US$110 million by 2015. In fact, Kiwanis will become the world’s largest single donor in the effort to eliminate MNT.

Our wonderful Governor Trang has decided to make this year’s district project the same as our international project, which is Project Eliminate. We will continue to raise money to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus. What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

Now we can all take time and focus on the eliminate project as our divisional project. Summertime is a great time to do outdoor service projects and raise money for Project Eliminate. For more ideas and information go to sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/
