‘MonkY Business,’ opening Nov. 11, an experience in live theater

The cast of “MonkY Business” poses in front of Morris. From left: Jack Carruth, Pat T. Peake, Mark Monaghan, Lavin Cuddihee and Guy Winker. (photo by Lorin Browning)

What is it about live theater that makes the experience so special? From the kindergarten stage to the “Great White Way” of Broadway, audiences flock to enjoy live performance. Unlike film or television, where mistakes and bloopers can be corrected and edited out, stage actors and tech-nicians must pick up and go on after the most colossal flub. The rehearsal process can be lengthy or brief, but despite the best preparation, on stage, anything can happen.

At a recent rehearsal for Tryon Little Theater’s “MonkY Busi-ness,” opening November 11, actors swapped nerve-wracking tales of stage nightmares. From missed entrances and forgotten song lyrics, to lighting cues, and wardrobe malfunctions, when all is said and done, these human errors can generate laughter. Strangely, audiences can be very forgiving or just totally unaware of errors. Actors are trained to keep on going and “wing it.”

In the comic musical farce, “MonkY Business,” five desper-ate brothers borrow a religious ra-dio station WGOD (“the WORD of God in Stereo!”) to conduct a fundraiser. The bank has given the Men in Brown thirty days to raise $250,000 or lose their

monastery. They have tried bake sales, raffles and dunking booths, to no avail. So in front of a studio audience, and a world-wide ra-diothon audience, the Monks of St. Bernard’s make their plea.

Tryon Little Theater audiences will of course be part of the show. Up close and personal in the newly reconfigured seating de-sign by Richard Sharkey, patrons can expect to hear music genres of country gospel, jazzy blues, up-tempo, ballads and even a touch of Argentine Tango. There will also be a special performance by Jack Carruth who sings of the challenges of celibacy, from the viewpoint of an innocent orphan named Brother Lee Love.

“MonkY Business” is directed by Richard Sharkey, with musi-cal direction by Pam McNeil. Joining Jack Carruth on stage, Lavin Cuddihee struts his stuff as the mischievous ‘devil-may-care’ Brother Clarence. In the fatherly role, Guy Winker of Rutherfordton, N.C., plays Ab-bott Costello, and Inman, S.C., resident Mark Monaghan will play the fastidious organizer, Brother Brooks. Newcomer Pat T. Peake rounds out the cast in the role of a miraculous monk,

votes and Shields receiving 312 votes, a difference of 84 votes.

The largest margin of votes came from the Green Creek precinct, where Hill won by 494 votes. Hill also won by large margins in the Columbus 7 precinct, by 482 votes, and in the Tryon precinct, where he won by 449 votes.

“I am humbled by the atten-dance today and your support as the Polk County Sheriff,” Hill said following the election. “Thank you for your confidence in me. I will do my very best to retain your confidence and support.”

Hill thanked his family, in par-ticular his mother and father, as well as employees, friends and sup-porters. He also said there is much

work to do in the days ahead.“I did not accept the ap-

pointment of sheriff almost two years ago to be a short-term caretaker,” he said. “I accepted the appointment to lead the sheriff’s office by depending on my ethics and over 20 years of law enforcement experience. Now as your elected sheriff I ask you to join me as we write the next chapter of history to-gether in Polk County.”

Hill’s win Tuesday is his first victory in an election, even though he has served as Polk’s sheriff since 2008. Hill was appointed sheriff in 2008 after the previous elected sheriff, Chris Abril, also a Demo-crat, resigned prior to pleading guilty to two counts of solicitation to take indecent liberties with a minor for incidents that occurred over 20 years ago.

respectively. Melton and Wat-son left the Democratic Party after winning seats four years ago in hopes of retaining those seats as unaffiliated candidates, which has still never been ac-complished in Polk County. Melton received 1,346 votes and Watson received 1,240 votes.

Owens was the high vote get-ter by 205 votes over Gasperson Tuesday. Owens received 3,630 votes compared to Gasperson’s 3,425. Pack won his seat with 3,389 votes, just 36 votes be-hind Gasperson. David Moore (R) was just 56 votes behind Pack with 3,333 votes. Benny Smith (D) came in fifth place with 3,097 votes and Margaret Johnson (D) came in sixth place with 3,031 votes.

Owens said following the election Tuesday that his win is bittersweet. He said he is disap-pointed that the other Republi-can, Moore, didn’t also win a seat. The Republicans won two seats out of three open seats on the board, but Gasperson’s win means the board will still have the same majority with Gasper-son retaining his seat along with current commissioner chair Cindy Walker and com-missioner Renée McDermott, who were not up for re-election this year.

“I can’t help but feel grateful and humble,” said Owens, “but at the same time disappointed. I do feel honored that people put that much trust in me again, But, I feel like changes need to be made and it takes three votes.”

Gasperson said he can’t express how grateful he is for “all the tireless efforts that have gone into my victory tonight.”

“There have literally been hundreds of Democrats who’ve contributed to my campaign,”

said Gasperson. “First I want to thank my wife and family for all they have done.”

Pack and Owens will re-join the board of commissioners, where they served until 2008, when they were both beaten as incumbents.

Pack said last night that he is glad he won, but without all three Republicans winning, they won’t be able to make a change on the board.

“I’m grateful people voted for me,” Pack said. “I’m glad to be there, but it’s going to be a tough road.”

Owens was the top vote-getter in five of Polk County’s seven precincts, in one of Polk’s larger turnouts for a non-pres-idential year. Look for turnout results in tomorrow’s paper.

Owens took Coopers Gap, Columbus 8, Green Creek, Sa-luda and White Oak. Gasperson took Columbus 7 and Smith took Tryon. Owens was second high vote getter in the Columbus 7 precinct. Moore was second in Coopers Gap and Columbus 8, with Gasperson being second in Green Creek and Tryon and Pack being second in Saluda and White Oak.

DR. ROBERT MCDANIEL

Once upon a time, not

so long ago, a local couple

happened upon a skinny

little Appaloosa mare in a

dirt lot. Her owner no longer

wanted to trail ride her; she

wasn’t needed any more.

Luckily this couple knew

a few things about horses

and decided to take her

home with them and find

the little mare a new family.

Some extra food, good grass

and a few trail rides later this

couple put an ad up in the

local feed store.

At this very same time, a

sweet “horse crazy” young

girl had convinced her

parents to let her take some

riding lessons. She caught

the bug and now dreamed of

having her own horse. After

some poking and prodding

her parents answered an ad

they found at the local feed

store: an Appaloosa mare –

for sale! The little girl, whose name

is Amanda, met the little

mare, who’s name is Nia,

and as most dreams happen

(when they come true) it was

destined they be together.

One man's trash is another's treasure

Amanda started to take

lessons from a local profes-

sional. After about six weeks

of lessons Amanda and Nia

entered the Foothills Riding

Club Horse Trial at FENCE

where they won their dres-

sage class and successfully

completed the cross-country

course and stadium jump-

ing. They ended up high

point!Amanda Morfino on her new horse Nia, with Renée and Nick Morfino. (photo submitted)

Wishgrove (phoTo By Chris BarTol)

(ConTinueD on page 11)

Wishgrove performs November 7by Lee Stockdale

Lennon. McCartney. David Bowie. Radiohead. Aerosmith. The Who. Rolling Stones. Yes. King Crimson. Genesis. The Eagles. Sound familiar? These are just some of the artists who have influenced Tryon’s Wish-grove. Wishgrove will be in performing in concert with the StereoFidelics at the Tryon Movie Theater on November 7 at 7 p.m. to benefit the Upstairs Artspace.

Wishgrove’s breakout single “Carolina,” from the band’s CD “I Lost My Head,” is getting daily airplay on WGWG.

Wishgrove is Tryon portrait and gallery artist Rich Nelson on guitars, keyboards, and vo-cals, Mark McCullough on bass and vocals, and Tony Bell on drums. The band formed eigh-teen months ago just to make music and have fun. “We had no agenda,” said Rich. But as their distinctive sound started to gel, the idea grew to writing, playing and then recording “whatever came naturally.”

They’ve all been playing in bands since they were kids. Nel-son was in his first “real band” when he was 14. In his early 20s, Nelson was in a Detroit band (Bitter Sweet Alley) that enjoyed some success in Michigan and

Canada. Chad Smith, who was in the Purple Gang with Nelson in the late 80s, is the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Nelson, a nationally renowned portrait artist, is characteristical-ly self-deprecating when he talks about his own vocal talents:

“I never intended to be the singer. We worked with two singers, but it just didn’t work out. Now I’m the primary sing-er.” Wishgrove is well into the new music for the band’s next CD. The November 7th concert will feature much of that new material.

Rich and Kim Nelson both grew up in Detroit and were married in 1995. They moved to Tryon in 2004. Their three children – Luke, 12, Lily, 10, and Sam, 8 – are constantly in-volved with soccer, gymnastics, TFAC plays and many other activities. Kim is a familiar sight in the Nelson van, shuttling kids around Tryon. Rich recently took Luke to a concert in Atlanta and laughed that he felt like a “music educator” in the car, turning up the radio and telling Luke about the history and backgrounds of different bands. They went to see the English alternative rock band

Muse at the Gwinnett Arena and Rich said Luke loved it!

Rich said, “The best thing about Wishgrove is I have these two friends I get together with each week and we get to make music. It’s like our ‘bowling night.’” He said he’s “not a big strategic thinker” for the band’s goals or future, but it would be fun if one of their songs took off on YouTube.

On the larger front, Nelson has a vision for the Tryon area becoming, increasingly, a place where artists, painters, sculp-tors, songwriters, poets, writers, and novelists come to live and work.

FENCE Holiday Barn Tour returnsThe Seventh Annual FENCE

Holiday Barn Tour returns this year on November 27 with six equestrian facilities on this year’s self-guided tour.

For the past six years the FENCE Holiday Barn Tour has attracted more than 7,000 people from upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina for the annual tour of some of the area’s most beautiful and unique eques-trian barns.

Judy Warden, a FENCE vol-unteer, started the FENCE Holi-day Barn Tour in 2003. Since then the barn tour has grown in popularity, hosting more than 7,000 visitors in only seven years. Visitors come from all

over upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina for the chance to tour equestrian barns in the area.

Proceeds from the holiday barn tour support nature edu-cation and outdoor recreation programs offered throughout the year by FENCE. Tickets can be purchased in Landrum at The Farm House and The Hay Rack; in Tryon at The Book Shelf; and in Saluda at The Purple Onion.

Tickets are also available at FENCE during normal busi-ness hours and on the FENCE website. For further information, visit www.fence.org or call 828-859-9021.

Explore the Arts with Elaine Pearsons’ photo play

elaine Pearsons with some of her work. (photo submitted)

Explore the Arts presents its third program Thursday, Novem-ber 4, at Tryon Fine Arts Center featuring Elaine Pearsons who will demonstrate the process involved in producing her hand-altered, whimsical creations. Everyone will gain insight and inspiration to be able to create their own memo-ries in photographs.

“I want my images to reflect the zest, the spirit, and the richness of life itself. This desire eventually led me to my unique treatment called ‘point-o-graphy.’ These one-of-a-kind portraits become 3-D facades as I photograph, cut out, and apply various key ele-ments of a person’s life, loves, and memorabilia to create a feeling of dimension and joy,” Pearsons says.

Having worked in New York and Los Angeles as well as lo-cally here in Tryon and environs, Pearsons’ photographs grace the collections of producers of film and television, as well as members of our community.

In its second year, TFAC’s Ex-plore the Arts is a series for adult and youth to pique your curiosity and creativity, and to explore di-versity in the arts. It is held in the Mahler Family Board Room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A modest admis-sion is collected at the door. No reservations are necessary. Light refreshments will be served.

For further information call Tryon Fine Arts Center 828-859-8322 or visit the web site www.tryonarts.org.

Smith to teach class on using five senses to capture, create holiday memories

Have you ever wanted to capture and preserve memories of family holidays, either yours, or those of an older relative? Now is your chance.

Local writer Maureen Smith will teach a creative writing class at ICC’s Polk campus guiding you through the process of using the five senses to bring back Christmas past, through the process of “interviewing” yourself and/or other family members.

Creating and sharing this holiday story will become a memory in itself. Maureen Smith has four decades of writing experience in breaking news, feature-writing; humor columns; poetry and media re-lations. She lives in Columbus with her faithful companion and service dog, Dexter.

The class will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. each Friday for six weeks starting November 5.

Music Reviewrita e. Landrum

I quote myself: “They named themselves for one of the greatest rivers in the world. Surely the very notion of river had a part in their choice. Tributaries, eddies, shal-lows, and depths – all were created, or are altered in some way, by the unstoppable motion of a powerful force. The St. Lawrence String Quartet truly lives in the river called Music. Like scullers, they know that ensemble is paramount. They must ride the river as one or their boat will not serve its purpose.” [Review-Tryon Daily Bulletin, February 2007]

Geoff Nuttall and Scott St. John, violins, Lesley Robertson, viola, and Christopher Costanza, cello, are a youthful, energetic group. Open-ing Tryon Concert Association’s 2010-2011 season October 16 on the Veh Stage at Tryon Fine Arts Center, these four, celebrating their 20-year history, will again be a high-light of TCA’s season. The group’s well-conveyed feeling of joy is

Still a river of sound St. Lawrence String Quartet

unique and adds a dimension to their performances that is unusual in the world of extremely difficult music. They are committed to a happy concert experience for all.

Mozart’s “String Quartet in D minor, K. 421” was an interesting opener. It was dark, but not too dark. It was often light, but with the slightest air of regret. Dark-ness lurked in the Menuetto – the form that usually brings to mind twirling dancers – a darkness that lurked through most of the fourth movement as well. I gave a lot of thought to Mozart’s mastery of this minor key and consider SLSQ’s performance spectacular. Rather than succumbing to the pendulum swing of plodding resignation per-versely evident in many unimagina-

tive performances, this fine quartet pushed the heaviness forward with buzzing strength.

I was transformed by the group’s performance of Prokofiev’s “String Quartet No. 2, Op. 92” (1941). It takes more than camaraderie and good-natured determination to take this piece beyond its Kabardian folk roots while staying true to the character of each borrowed melody. It is hard to believe that Prokofiev was not a string player. What he asks of these four instruments speaks of a natural feel and curiosity as well as a grasp of the physics of sound and the unique pleasures of open fifths and single open strings. Ev-ery player “got it” and treated each note as precious while permissively coddling the entire piece in the way one might monitor a sturdy, curious child set loose in a fragrant field.

Ravel’s “String Quartet in F Major” is a familiar and beloved work. It is so familiar that I didn’t care whether I heard it or not. In

fact, I didn’t really want to hear anything else after the Prokofiev. I felt like I’d just had a hearty bowl of rassolnik and was being offered a salmon terrine on top of it. I stayed, of course, and was transported to France where I discovered I was still hungry. I quote myself again from the same 2007 review: “What sets SLSQ apart is their ability to make even familiar works sound unvisited and intriguing. That they could play at their chosen tempi and still do incredible things with shape and color is testament to their unmatched ability as an ensemble.” The second movement was espe-cially captivating as the interplay of complex rhythms in all four voices was exposed in a way I’d never experienced.

A movement from a Haydn string quartet made a gem of an encore that completed this happy experience.

Bravo, bravo, bravo, brava – Bravi!

Foothills Humane Society plans open house, gala Nov. 6

dana mayer and champ with Santa at the 2008 open house. (photo submitted)

Twenty years ago, Polk Coun-ty got its first animal shelter, the result of years of planning and hard work by volunteers to re-lieve the suffering of abandoned, unwanted and abused animals in the community. It is still the county’s only open admission animal shelter, and has served over 31,000 animals since 1990.

On Saturday, November 6, Foothills Humane Society will celebrate 20 years at the shelter and dedicate the new dog and cat facilities at a ceremony starting at 11 a.m. During the past year, the addition of The Carol M. Well-man Trust Cat Welcome Center, the Kitty Infirmary and the Dog House has increased the shelter’s capacity by 50 percent and pro-vided intake and isolation facili-ties to keep the shelter animals healthier. Dog house runs have been sponsored in memory of Al-lan Merrill, in memory of Dandy, beloved boxer of Julie Gordon, and in honor of Steve King.

The public is invited to the

dedication ceremony and the open house from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Pony rides for children, games, door prizes and demon-strations are planned. Sociable dogs on leashes are welcome to enjoy the festivities and join in the games. Fred May will be on hand to serve his hot dogs and chili as well as other refresh-ments.

A highlight of the day will be Santa posing for portraits with owners and their pets by profes-sional photographer Shelly Day-ton. A donation to care for the shelter animals is requested.

The celebrations continue from 5 until 7 p.m. at Tryon Fine Arts Center. The Po’ Kitties Photo Contest Exhibit, featuring over 200 photographs, will take center stage. A reception will follow a brief ceremony honor-ing the 20th Anniversary of the Foothills Shelter and the photo contest winners. The public is invited to attend.

Conversations from Birdlandby DonWeathington

Driving back from Asheville recently, I heard a song on the radio from the 1960s that I can’t seem to get out of my head. It was “59th Street Bridge - Feel-ing Groovy” by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Innocuous enough, the song is one of those tunes from the 60s era that en-couraged people to take the time to notice and enjoy the things that are going on around them - a kind of mindfulness.

If you remember, the first four lines of the song are as follows:

“ S l o w d o w n , y o u m o v e t o o fast. You got to make the mornin’ last. Just kickin’ down the cobblestones, Lookin’ for fun and feelin’ groovy.”

I was amused to look down at the speedometer to find that I was driving over 70 miles per hour, and really didn’t have anything pressing at the end of my drive. Why was I driving so fast? Easy -- most of the traffic going in my direction was trav-elling at that speed and I was just sucked into the pattern. It got me thinking about the speed of our culture. Everyone seems to be in a hurry; trying to save time . to do what?

Watching the pace and the complexity of the lives of my

children and their children, makes me think that we aren’t just trying to save time but we are also trying to fill every moment with some adrenaline-driven activity. The psycho-logical roots of this behavior are deep and tangled indeed. This is a stressful way to live. I decided to noodle around and see what others think about the idea of being too much in a hurry.

Existential psychologist Rollo May says, “It is an ironic habit of human beings to run

faster when we have lost our way.”

Gratefully, a s w e a g e there are op-portunities to rid ourselves

of the compulsion to be con-stantly busy, or productive, or “engaged.” These are hard habits to break however. We aren’t quite sure what’s on the other side of “busy, productive and engaged.” The Manhattan poet and writer Phillip Lopate once said, “The prospect of a long day at the beach makes me panic.”

If you can overcome the dread of relinquishing the drive to rush and accomplish, there are other perspectives to be enjoyed. The early 20th century writer Milan Kundera instructs us that “To sit with a dog on a

hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where do-ing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”

Ah! There is a destination I was looking for. Escaping bore-dom in favor of Peace seems a desirable target. While we cannot individually stop global conflicts, we can, if we are will-ing to exhibit the concentration to do so, find peace of mind. This quest, more often than not, requires “giving up” some destructive habits. It’s sort of “anti-work”. As Baptist minister Harry Emerson Fosdick said near the turn of the 20th century, “No one can get inner peace by pouncing on it”.

Meditation, prayer, self awareness are tools that can help us along the way to seek and find levels of inner peace. Real access to these tools begins with taking the time to calm the mind, focus on breathing or an inner vision and/or your heartbeat; and letting go intru-sive thoughts and compulsive urges.

One final tidbit of Zen from Lao-tzu: “Nature does not hur-ry, yet everything is accom-plished.”

So slow down, if you’re moving too fast.

Don Weathington is a retired psychotherapist and business owner who lives in Gillette Woods at a place called Bird-

BRCA book fair November 8 - 12BRCA’s Scholastic Book

Fair will be held on Monday, November 8 to Friday, Novem-ber 12 between 7:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.

The book fair theme – “Here’s to Our Heroes! Read-ing Saves the Day!” – is part of a week-long event that brings the books kids love to the

school. Because heroes of the faith and everyday heroes are everywhere, the heroes theme allows students to celebrate all types of heroes, from the ordinary to he extraordinary, inspired by a love for books.

The book fair also coincides with National Young Readers Week, when BRCA will cel-

ebrate reading with the many visitors attending Blue Ridge Christian Academy.

The book fair is open to home school families and the community. Call 864-895-9008 or visit BRCA on the web at www.brca.us for more infor-mation.
