1. Introduction

This 8/16/32 ports CAT-5 KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) Switch w/ Console Free allows multiple 8/16/32 ports computers (PCs or servers) respectively with PS2 & USB interface controlled by one set of PS2 & USB keyboard, Mouse and monitor. Each PC port of this CAT-5 KVM switch is used with standard RJ-45 connector. No matter what kind of PC such as PS2 PC, USB PC, MAC or SUN Microsystems with USB interface, there is a suitable dongle ---“ CAT-5 to PS2/VGA ” or “ CAT-5 to USB/VGA “ dongles could be linked between this KVM switch and the comprehensive computers or servers.

Legacy PC/Server with PS/2 interface or USB interface is unable to drive a long distance keyboard and mouse. Applying CAT-5 technology to solve the legacy PS2 cable or USB limitation between PC/Sever and KVM switch and eliminating conventional KVM cable bulk. The said “ Transmitter “ might be “ CAT-5 to PS2/VGA Dongle“ or “ CAT-5 to USB/VGA Dongle“ synthesizes keyboard/mouse signal and VGA monitor signal of PC/Server for being easily transmitted to a 150 meters away from CAT-5 KVM switch over popular LAN CAT-5 cable. This 8/16/32 ports CAT-5 KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) Switch is able to upgrade to 1+1 console CAT-5 KVM Switch by inserting add-on IP module or CAT-5 Module. It is highly recommended to put 1+1 console CAT-5 KVM switch at master bank and the 2nd KVM switch or the following KVM switches would be located at slave bank. The maximum connection up to 256 PCs (by chaining 32-port CAT-5 KVM). It ensures easy switch by front panel button, Hot-keys or OSD menu (On Screen Display). Not only naming for each computer can be done for easy identification, but also protects access by passwords. Additionally with the Auto Scan function it helps you managing all connecting systems at ease. Optional IP & CAT-5 module: The IP Based remote console of KVM switch support TCP/IP protocol and intranet or internet access from remote client user. The CAT-5 Based remote console of KVM switch locates your keyboard, mouse and monitor up to 150 meters away from KVM switch. This KVM switch is built with a CAT-5 receiver inside of PC port. It synthesizes keyboard/mouse signal and VGA monitor signal for being easily transmitted to a long distance over popular LAN CAT-5 cable.

2. Hardware Installation Prior to installation please switch off all computer and peripherals. Following guide is using 8-port CAT-5 KVM as example. Please note 16/32-port CAT-5 KVM has similar hardware installation.

2.1 Rack Mount Installation Please open the package carefully and take out all required accessories to prepare fluent installation. The size of device is 19”. For installation on rack please install the rack-mount kit. Please measure the suitable distance between CAT-5 KVM and computer, keyboard, monitor and mouse before installation.

2.2 Console Installation (See next page of Application diagram for more details)

Step 1 Plug power adaptor into CAT-5 KVM and power socket. You will hear one beep and port 1 red LED Constant lids.

Step 2 Please connect HDDB 15-pin blue connector from monitor to console port of CAT-5 KVM.

Step 3 Please connect PS2 Mini Din 6-pins green connector of mouse then purple connector of keyboard or connect USB A Type keyboard and mouse to console port of CAT-5 KVM Switch.

Step 4 Please connect CAT-5 T-Dongle to computer (or server) then connect CAT-5 cable between T-Dongle and CAT-5 KVM Switch. (CAT-5 cable length is limited in 150 meters)

Step 6 When above cable installation is complete, please re-check all cable is securely fastened at correct socket. (Recommend attach label for identification)

Step 7 If daisy chaining is needed please use the daisy chain cable included with package.

NOTE: Please do not use other type of cable for daisy chaining CAT-5 KVM.

CAT-5 extender Remote Console To extending your PC console up to 150 meters： Please connect the CAT-5 to the R-Box then switch R-Box to remote console.

CAT-5 Receiver Installation 1. Connect CAT-5 cable from CAT-5 KVM Switch to Receiver of CAT-5 KVM Extender. 2. Connect Keyboard, Mouse and monitor to Receiver of CAT-5 KVM Extender as

Console. (See Note 1) 3. Connect Local PC to R-box (CAT-5 Receiver) by using accompanied 3 to 3 Cable

Keyboard/Mouse/VGA. 4. Power on the CAT-5 Receiver by plugging the power adaptor. Note: 1. There are 3 types of CAT-5 KVM Extender, PS/2, USB and Combo type as optional

accessory for user’s reference.

Console Swap Wait for 2 seconds without any keyboard and mouse input then the console will be swapped. During the time, the console without authorization can only view the display. Note: This 1+1 console is designed as one control browser, both local console and remote console can access and browse the server but only one console, Local console or Remote console, is able to control KVM Switch and have the same priority to control computer.

Operation & Usage At factory default, no Password is required for CAT-5 KVM. You may press go to Password setting by pressing Hotkey “Scroll Lock” twice + “F2”.

★ Warring：Please do not set any password before you are familiarized with this device. Otherwise, you have to contact distributor to reset your KVM Switch to factory mode.

2.3 OSD Manual Instruction: To Press “Scroll Lock” twice to activate OSD Main Menu as illustrated below:

2.4 OSD Main Screen Icon Introduction:

The computer is powered on at selected port.

There is a password protected for this Port. Note: No Password is required for each port of factory default setting.

USER1~32 Default Naming of corresponding port number. Note: User is able to change Port name accordingly.

The PC port is set at Auto Scan Mode. Note: Each Port is set for Auto Scan at factory default

S Scroll Lock twice + S to turn buzzer on or off. Note: The buzzer is turn on at default Setting.

2.4.1 F1 - Edit computer name (EDIT)

Press F1 to edit Port name as illustrated above. You can press F1 (SAVE), F2 (ERASE), or ESC (QUIT) function key once the command is confirmed.

Maximum character is 12 of each port. F1 - Save port name settings and return to OSD main menu F2 - Erase all characters. ( ) - Erase individual character. ESC – Return to EDIT menu

2.4.2 F2 - Password setting (SECURITY) Press F2 to set password ( SECURITY) as illustrated above. You can press, F1 (SUPERUSER), ESC (QUIT), ENTER (Complete) once password is confirmed.

F1 - Press F1 (SUPERUSER) to set SUPERUSER password, please refer to right window of OSD as illustrated below and then Press Enter once password is confirmed (maximum 8 characters).

No password is required for SUPERUSER for default setting. ESC - Press ESC to return OSD main menu once password is confirmed. ENTER - Press ENTER to complete settings.

Password Setting Steps: “Scroll Lock” twice to activate OSD Main Menu Press “F2” on the port you selected. Press “Enter” once Password is confirmed (Maximum 8 character).

Re-type the password to confirm it. Done

PC port with password Once password is confirmed for the port, you will see below illustrated to request the password. Please key in the password before get into this port.

PC port without password

If no password is required, you will see below illustrated after get into the port.

SUPERUSER PASSWORD

It’s required to key in password once SUPERUSER password is set. It means, CAT-5 KVM Switch will ask for password when power on or RESET.

2.4.3 F3 - SCAN PORT SELECTION Press F3 to make the port to be scanned and press F3 again to un-selected the port and icon will disappear. Note: Selected Port will show .

2.4.4 F4 - AUTO SCAN Press F4 on OSD main menu to enter Auto Scan function menu as illustrated below. The secondary function keys are F1, F2 and F3.

F1 (BROADCAST) - It’s a complete scanning to each port. F2 (Scan POWER ON PC) – It scans the powered on PC only. F3 (Scan SELECT PC) – It scans selected PC only. The scanning time is 10 seconds as default setting. The scanning process will be stopped by pressing ESC.

2.4.5 F5- HOT-KEY Press F5 on OSD Main menu for HOT-KEY setting. You can choose the Hot Key you want by pressing F1, F2 or F3 the press ENTER to confirm the command.

F1 - to select Scroll Lock as Hot-key F2 - to select Num Lock as Hot-key F3 - to select Caps Lock as Hot-key ENTER - to save setting and exit the Hot-key setting menu

OSD RATE / SCAN RATE SETTING

Please follow below Steps to setup Scan Rate: Please press on OSD Main Menu Key in the time with 3 characters (i.e. 15 Seconds -> 015) Enter to confirm the command.

Note: Default Scan Rate is 10 seconds. The range of Scan Rate is 005~255 seconds. OSD cancellation cannot be used by pressing ESC when OSD Time is set.

2.4.6 F10 – Wide Range Adjustment F10 is a wide range adjustment for Focus. There are 16 phases of adjustment and loop from 0~15.

2.4.7 F12 – Small Range Adjustment F12 is a small range adjustment for Focus. There are 16 phases of adjustment and loop from 0~15.

3. Firmware upgrade CAT-5 KVM Switch has built in ability to upgrade firmware. Whenever upgrading is desirable, the device can be easily upgraded without purchasing new hardware to suit the new environment.

A CD ROM software package is included with the package. Please execute BSETUP.EXE to obtain the new firmware file. Upgrading is done through RS-232 connection to CAT-5 KVM to complete the process.

3.1 Procedure of Firmware Upgrading

A. F/W Upgrade Utility Installation: Step 1

Execute SETUP.EXE.

Step 2 Follow below steps to complete the installation then re-boot after installation complete.

B. F/W Upgrade Procedure:

Step 1 Connect RS-232 cable from PC to KVM Switch.

Step 2 Execute F/W_Upgrade and you will see below window.

Step 3 Go to File -> File Open -> Select New F/W file (*.txt) -> Execute “Download”.

Step 4 Firmware upgrade successful as below window.

3.2 Device F/W Checking: Use can check KVM F/W version by executing F/W upgrade utility -> Go to “Help” as below window show.

3.3 Trouble Shooting:

Com1 Open Error!!! It means RS-232 cable is not well connected, please re-connected RS-232 cable between PC & KVM Switch then execute utility again.

Device Not Found!!! Please check RS-232 cable is well connected between PC and KVM Switch. Once you re-connect RS-232 cable, please Execute “Download” again.

Download Data Error!!! It means that F/W data lose during upgrading. Please Check RS-232 cable connection between PC & KVM Switch then follow 3.1 Step 1 to 5 to upgrade the F/W.

Troubleshooting 1. The computer boot up fine, but keyboard doesn’t work

PS2 keyboard or PS2 mouse port is not designed for Hot-plug (USB port is Hot-plug), but need to wait few second for PC bus emulations.

The port start from left bottom corner at back of the KVM switch. Don’t press any keys on the keyboard while the selected computer is booting up.

Otherwise, it might cause the keyboard error or keyboard is not detected at PC side.

Make sure the keyboard works when directly plugged into the computer. Try a different keyboard, but use only 101, 102 or 104-key keyboard.

2. The Mouse is not detected during PC boot up. Make sure the USB or PS2 mouse works when directly plugged into the computer. Avoiding moving the mouse or pressing the mouse buttons when switching ports.

3. CAT-5 Console Extender power LED is not ON, to make sure power adapter is connected to KVM CAT-5 extender.

4. No video signal is displayed on the remote monitor. Please go to check all of VGA cables & connector and CAT-5 cable & connector is

loosed or disconnected. VGA cable was not attached to computer during boot up process.

Power adapter is not connected to extender.

5. Video signal is foggy or un-cleared on the screen, Please check VGA connector, or the VGA resolution is too high for the length of

cable being used. If the problem happened at VGA resolution, to shorten the CAT-5 cable length or reduce VGA resolution.

It is highly recommended to use “optimal CAT-5 cable length “to get the best video quality and don’t waste unnecessary CAT-5 cable. Video resolutions supported up to 1024 X 768 for CAT-5-Based 150 m remote user and up to 1280 X 1024 for CAT-5-Based 150 m remote user.

Check the local monitor ground. If the CAT-5 Receiver do not have a local PC. Please make should the check monitor ground.

The KVM switch will provide DDC information to all the PC VGA board, if the local both console’s monitor and KVM switch have been turn on before the PC boot up, if the PC boot up faster then the KVM the PC miss the DDC (Data Display Channel) information so please turn of the PC wait few minute then turn on again.
