What is the Virginia Department of Education eLearning Backpack Initiative?

A multi-year initiative to provide every student in the selected schools with a tablet.

The eLearning Backpack Initiative is a broader initiative in Virginia intended to assist schools in the transition to digital content and tablet computers.

Technology is a valuable tool that supports and enhances PWCS instructional program by promoting problem solving, critical thinking, analytical, and decision making skills.

How Does My Student Get a Tablet?

There is an annual $40 take-home digital device student user fee for the school year. For students to be able to use a take-home digital device, parents/guardians and students must complete the “Digital Device Student Loan Agreement” form.

Students who do not pay the fee will not be able to take the device off school property and will be in-school, day users only.

Using the Tablet at School

Digital devices are intended for use during each day with teacher direction. Students must bring their digital device to all classes unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher.

Students are responsible for participating in class and completing assignments even if they forget to bring the tablet to school. Loaner digital devices may not be available to students who forgot to bring their digital devices to school or failed to charge them at home.

Students are expected to bring digital devices fully charged at home to school each day.

Using the Tablet at HomeComcast Internet Essentials Program offers $9.95 a month

home Internet service and a low-cost computer to families in households that: Are located where Comcast offers Internet service. Have at least one child eligible to participate in the National School

Lunch Program. Have not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90

days. Do not have an outstanding Comcast debt that is under one year old. For additional information call 1.855.846.8376, or visit

Responsible Use of the TabletParents/guardians and students are responsible for

adhering to the PWCS Acceptable Use and Internet Safety policy. And for using the tablets for assignments directly related to the curriculum.

Parents/guardians are asked to discuss with their student the values and standards that they expect their student to follow with regard to the use and care of the digital device, and the use of the Internet.

Distribution and Collection of the Tablet

Tablets will be distributed to students during the school day during the first week of February in 9th and 10th grade P.E. classes

Devices will be collected from the students prior to the end of the school year for summer maintenance and updates.

Tonight’s Activities

Following this meeting, we are asking families to complete the loan agreement form at the back of the handbook if you agree to pay the user fee so that your student can take the tablet home.

We will have a table in the lobby for submitting the form and user fee.

Questions about the fee itself should be directed to Principal Dr. Sadki.
