ELEEBANA ENDEAVOUR Issue 5 Eleebana ENDEAVOUR Issue 5 – Monday 25 June 2018 EXCELLENCE, CARE & COOPERATION, ENDEAVOUR WHAT’S ON Welcome to our 5 th Edition…. Welcome to the fifth edition of our monthly exposé of everything great happening at ‘the best school in town’. It seems hard to believe that almost half the academic year has flown by. I am proud to confirm that next week’s Semester 1 Student Reports will provide the most accurate and authentic assessment of student learning, certainly in my time, at Eleebana PS. All credit to class teachers and students for their dedication and hard work - as a community something to be very proud of! 5-weekly cycles of data collection in literacy and numeracy have not only revealed student strengths; but also, areas of development for individual students never before identified. This is not a cause for concern; rather a point of celebration in our desire to deliver the most literate and numerate group of 597 students in our care. EVERY student at EPS is known, valued and cared for. It has been my absolute privilege to lead this transformation in Semester 1, 2018. Beyond that, I believe we have truly embodied the values of public education with you – our parent and caregiver community – as authentic learning partners. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved in every aspect of schooling over this time and have been overwhelmed and motivated by the tremendously positive community feedback we have received – thank you on behalf of all staff! Week 9: Expectation Evaluation Week - Evaluation of our implementation and performance of school expectations…. In 2018, Eleebana PS staff and students have committed to a high expectations culture as a pathway on our shared journey toward educational excellence. This week in classes, at an age- appropriate level, students - supported by their teachers - will reflect on achievement of our shared expectations and also brainstorm ideas for our Semester 2 Expectations. Eleebana PS Student Leader of the Month – Lara W Lara W is our student leader of the month. Lara, who will be turning 12 very shortly, enjoys playing netball and is just one belt away from her black belt in karate. Lara’s favourite foods are strawberries and mangoes and she ‘loves having a good conversation with people’! The things that Lara likes best about EPS are ‘that it’s super-easy to make friends and the teachers make learning fun and easy’. She also enjoys participating in school sports and is a member of our girls PSSA cricket, basketball and netballs teams, and Friday knockout senior netball team. Lara became a leader so she ‘could help students who have issues and be someone they can talk to’ and also to develop her leadership skills for later life. Lara would like to be seen ‘as a role model for younger students’ as she believes it is important for student councillors to share student’s ideas and concerns about the school. Values that are important to Lara are ‘being a role model and a person that accepts responsibility’. She has her sights set on a career as a lawyer, a professional make-up artist or a journalist. If Lara was principal for a day, she would ‘make ALL staff (teachers) wear the school uniform including the hats - No tights!’ Re-name Eleebana Canteen Competition - Final Results… Again overwhelmingly, the winning name of our re-name the EPS Canteen Survey was……. EXCELLENCE, CARE & COOPERATION, ENDEAVOUR WHAT’S ON

EPS New Student Polo Survey… Student, staff and community votes are in and ratified by the EPS P&C. The preferred new student polo shirt is, overwhelmingly, the ‘Navy Design 1’ with the ‘EPS’ collar. Work will now commence with our uniform supplier for an anticipated rollout in Term 4 2018. Parents and carers are assured there will be an extended period, over several years, where current polos will be acceptable.

Good Luck Mr May & the Hunter Region Rugby League Team Good luck to Coach May who takes his Hunter Region Rugby League Team to Mudgee this week (Monday – Thursday) to contest the state competition. Mr May is to be complimented on his commitment to this role, giving up all his recent Sundays to conduct team training sessions. It is an obvious strength of our school to have teachers so dedicated to all aspects of public education!

Vale Sheelagh Flaherty EPS staff and students were deeply saddened last week to learn of the sudden passing of Sheelagh Flaherty. Sheelagh committed many years as a ‘grand-friend’ to our reading programs supporting the literacy growth of countless EPS students. Sheelagh’s son, Guy Flaherty, was a student at the old school by the lake and the bell-ringer for Year 6. Guy recalled on his first day of kindy being sent down the hill on his own by his mum, Sheelagh; and, when he dared ask Mrs Kitley and My Rigby where his mum was, being told he was ‘old enough to find his own way down’. How times have changed! Guy Flaherty is now the District Inspector of Mid-North Coast Police, Nambucca Valley. My sincere thanks to Mrs Lee and Mahala B who represented our school at Sheelagh’s funeral service. Our intention is to purchase an outdoor 'reading' table setting that we will dedicate as a memorial to Sheelagh.

Eleebana Excellence…truly EXCELLENT!!! A massive crowd of well over 500 students, staff, parents and carers assembled last Wednesday evening to hear the first performance of the EPS Training Band conducted by Susan Philippa, and they were truly amazing! The EPS Senior Band, under the direction of Teena Wallace left no one in any doubt regarding the quality of the band program that is available to students at our great school. One had to constantly remind oneself that these wonderful musicians were primary school students producing that most incredible amazing sound! My personal thanks to Mr Goeldner, Mrs Lee and Mrs Williams who make this program possible, the band parent support crew, and the Board of Directors at Belmont 16s who provided the room free of charge and continue to provide tremendous support to our school and public education.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition – Local Final This Thursday 28/6, Eleebana PS will host both the Stage 2 and Stage 3 local finals of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. For 23 years, the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition has been encouraging primary school students to explore ideas of multiculturalism in Australia, as well as giving them a place to practice their public speaking skills and improve their confidence. Last year, more than 2,000 students from all across NSW participated in the competition, culminating in two amazing state finals. My sincere thanks to Mr Shearman for coordinating our hosting of this event.

Beanies for Brain Cancer – Mark Hughes Foundation Cheque Presentation Last Monday 18/6, we had the privilege of hosting Mark Hughes from the Mark Hughes Foundation at our Monday Assembly and presenting him with a cheque for $830 – proceeds from our Beanies for Brian Cancer Day. Mark spoke to students about the importance of these funds in supporting research efforts to find a cure for brain cancer and the insidious and non-discriminatory capacity of brain cancer to affect adults and children alike. Our thoughts go out to our families, both student and staff, deeply impacted by brain cancer at this time.

EPS Spotlight 2018 – A new approach to costuming… Preparations for Spotlight 2018 are well underway! 2018 will see a new a new, cost-effective, approach to costuming for students Kinder to Year 5 with the emphasis on keeping costumes relatively simple - i.e. clothing/costumes that most students would own, have access to, or could be purchased at a small cost. Thanks to ongoing fundraising efforts, inclusive of last week’s highly successful Term 2 Discos, the school will be paying costume costs to the value of $5 per student. There will be no additional costume charge for families.

Warners Bay HS NAIDOC Celebrations – Thursday 28 June, 9:15am Warners Bay High School will be celebrating NAIDOC Week this Thursday led by their Junior AECG. Eleebana PS will be represented by our Aboriginal students, families and myself. Eleebana PS, in consultation with our Bay Community of schools, has an exciting week of NAIDOC celebrations planned for Week 2 Term 3 – more details to come! Wishing everyone a fantastic week, Dr. Carl Leonard – Principal (rel.)
