DEFINITION
Interviewing is a conversation with a purpose.
Interviewing uses all the forms ofcommunication- speaking listening and writing
(notes during and after the interview and the
interview write-up).

Types of patterned interview.
In a patterned interview the interviewer controls the direction of
conversation. It is of following two kinds.
Direct Interview:
In the direct interview the interviewer keeps very close control at all
times by directing limited and specific question. He / She asks
close ended question and does not let the interviewee speak freely.
Indirect Interview:
In the indirect interview the interviewer makes little or no attempt to
direct the applicant conversation.

1. Selection and Placement / Job Interview
Its purpose is to hire and select the right person forthe right job.
2. Vocational Guidance interview
Its is to help an individual find his best vocation /occupation / profession.
3. Counseling Interview
It is conducted to help emotionally disturbed. Homeand personal problems are also discussed.

4. Survey interview
It is used by marketing personnel to find answers to
the marketing problems.
5. Group Interview
Groups are formed to talk out the problem.
6. Diagnostic Interview
This type of interview is conducted by clinical
psychologists to help patients.

7. Appraisal Interview In many companies, managers periodically interviewtheir subordinates to appraise their performance. The interview works as a control device, and itdetermines whether the goals established have beenaccomplished.
8. Information Interview
It is held to give or get information. Such interviews
are held between buyer and seller, teacher-student,parent-child, patient-physician, lawyer-client, andmanager-subordinate. Here you observe what hasbeen avoided, omitted, exaggerated, concealed,fabricated, or twisted.

11. Disciplinary (corrective) Interview
Here the accused (blame) subordinate is given
an opportunity to explain or justify his action. His
reply may follow a warning to keep from therepetition of such actions.

Purpose/Objectives for which interview is carried
Interviews are face-to-face communication. It is a form of
interpersonal communication. Interviews are not just for job
procurement. The purpose for which interviews are carried may

problem from the employee. In other cases
interviews may be conducted by a doctor/psychiatrist

EVALUATING: taken by supervisor, manager to
review and evaluate the performance of the
employee(s).

DISCIPLINING: taken by an officer, manager if the
behavior of the employee(s) require action to
maintain discipline.

TERMINATING: taken by an officer/manager to inform
employee(s) about the termination from job.
