Mining Shift Supervisor Mining Department - Mototolo Ref. No. HRM0153 The successful candidate will manage the planning, leading, organisation and control of the production at one of the rig sections and must comply with the company’s HSEC systems. He/she will furthermore manage the health and safety of employees, material and discipline. The focus will be on safe quality of work, achieving production targets, housekeeping and support functions. The Supervisor will control and direct all activities of subordinates and, as such, take on the role of coach, mentor and instructor. Candidates should hold a valid Blasting Certificate, Competent A&B Certificate and valid Mining Shift Supervisor Certificate, and have previous experience in a supervisory position in underground hard rock mine. Trackless experience in underground hard rock mine will be an advantage. A valid Certificate of Fitness for underground work and own reliable transport are also required. No. 17981 By maintaining a high-level awareness of plant needs, the successful candidate will be expected to procure the correct quality and quantities of materials and services, with a strong emphasis on non-stock items and service orders as well as higher volumes, against the best prices and on time. This role requires a Grade 12 plus 3 years’ relevant purchasing management experience, computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and systems skills (SAP). The skill set required encompasses negotiation, verbal and written communication, numeracy, interpersonal (including conflict handling), planning and organising, administration and report-writing. Our ideal person is an analytical thinker showing attention to detail, who can handle stress well. AMCU will strike; but when? Rustenburg – After receiving a mandate from their members on Monday, 13 January, to strike at Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, the Association of Mineworkers and Con- struction Union (AMCU) said on Wednes- day the decision to embark on industrial action in the platinum sector would only be forthcoming in the “coming week”. They have not issued the mandatory 48-hours notice of a strike yet, and Johan Theron, spokesman for Impala, confirmed that they had not heard from the union’s negotiating team yet, saying, “We expected them to renew their mandate before coming back to us.” The dominant union at the world’s three big- gest platinum producers is waiting for the go-ahead from their members at the other two role-players in the industry, Anglo Amer- ican Platinum (Amplats) and Lonmin. Speaking after the meeting on Monday, AMCU president Joseph Matunjwa said the strike would happen at the “appropriate time”, saying the delay was due to “internal union matters”.... Maybe the holiday season had something to do with it. A simultaneous strike at the three largest platinum producers in the world could bring the production of the metal in South Africa to a halt, hitting the already struggling industry hard. AMCU’s demands for a minimum entry level wage of R12 500 remains unchanged, while the companies have offered 8% across the board. Last month UASA and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) accepted an up to 8.5% wage increase offer from Amp- lats. Two-thirds of the workers at Amplats who are affiliated with AMCU, will not get the increase. Meanwhile, a report published by the SABC quotes an AMCU member, Thebe Maswabi, as having said, “There’s how many com- panies that they close because of AMCU? We’re tired.” Impala Fatality Tragic death of 24 year old Rustenburg – Shaun Pelser tragically passed away on Wednesday evening (8 Jan ’14) after he was elec- trocuted while working on a pump at Impala Minpro’s Concentrator Plant. This 24-year-old young man was employed by Impala for the past 5 years. It is not yet clear how the accident occurred, but investigations are underway. A Section 54 safety stoppage notice was is- sued, and production will resume once the investiga- tions are complete. Platinum Weekly spoke to Johan Theron, Media Relations Officer for Impala who con- firmed the incident. The Platinum Weekly would like to express our condo- lences to the family and friends of Shaun Pelser.
