1 EPIPHANYFirst Sunday after the Epiphany:

The Baptism of Our LordRCL COLLECT January 10,2016

TraditionalFATHER IN HEAVEN, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan didst proclaimhim thy beloved Son and anoint him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who arebaptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confesshim as Lord and Savior; who with thee and the same Spirit liveth and reigneth, oneGod, in glory everlasting. Amen.

ContemporaryFATHER IN HEAVEN, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimedhim your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who arebaptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confesshim as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God,in glory everlasting. Amen.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:1-7NOW THUS SAYS THE LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, OIsrael: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, theyshall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and theflame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, yourSavior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Becauseyou are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return foryou, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring youroffspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north,"Give them up," and to the south, "Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away andmy daughters from the end of the earth—everyone who is called by my name, whom Icreated for my glory, whom I formed and made."

RefrainThe voice of the Lord is upon the waters.

Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, *ascribe to the Lord glory andstrength.Ascribe to the Lord the glory duehis Name; * worship the Lord inthe beauty of holiness.

Psalm 29 from the Book Common Prayer3 The voice of the Lord is upon the

waters; the God of glorythunders; * the Lord is upon themighty waters.

The voice of the Lord is apowerful voice; * the voice of theLord is a voice of splendor. The voice of the Lord breaks thecedar trees; * the Lord breaks thecedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like acalf, * and Mount Hermon like ayoung wild ox.The voice of the Lord splits theflames of Fire; the voice of theLord shakes the wilderness; * theLord shakes the wilderness ofKadesh.

8 The voice of the Lord makes theoak trees writhe * and strips theforests bare.

9 And in the temple of the Lord *all are crying, "Glory!"

10 The Lord sits enthronedabove the flood; * the Lord sitsenthroned as King for evermore.

i l The Lord shall give strength tohis people; * the Lord shall givehis people the blessing ofpeace.

SECOND READING: Acts 8:14-17NOW WHEN THE APOSTLES at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted theword of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed forthem that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come uponany of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peterand John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

GOSPEL: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22AS THE PEOPLE were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their heartsconcerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them bysaying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I amnot worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spiritand fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing tloor and to gatherthe wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Nowwhen all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and waspraying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodilyform like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved;with you I am well pleased."

his voice,so that we, who are saved in the waters

of rebirth, might remain faithful to the covenant and

forever proclaim your saving deeds.May the Holy Spirit rouse us to reject our

selfish impulses and worldly desires, and by dying to self, may our lives bear witness to your g\oryand may we ceaselessly serve your people.Give us zeal to proclaim your justice and

Today's Readings: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11;Psalm 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10 or Psalm 104:lb-2, 3-4, 24-25,27-28, 29-30; Acts of the Apostles 10:34-38 or Titus 2:11-14;3:4—7; Luke 3:15-16, 21-22. The readings for today draw usdeeper into the mystery of the Incarnation while helping usconsider our life in Christ. The First Reading announces thecoming Messiah, who will set all free from bondage. In theGospel, as the Father identifies Jesus as his beloved Son, thefulfillment of God's plan in Jesus is revealed.

God's power is manifest in Jesus Christ, who saves usfrom sin. Christ is also to be manifest in us. The Holy Spirithas renewed us in the waters of Baptism, and we are sentforth to radiate God's glory. In Baptism, we are plunged into

the waters of life, shedding our old self and rising to newlife. As Paul writes in the Second Reading, we have becomeheirs to eternal life and share in the mission of Christ. Thisis a tremendous gift. Like the psalmist, we respond to God'slove by saying, "Bless the Lord, O my soul."

At the close of this season and the beginning ofOrdinary Time, delve deeper into these readings and askyourself, "Do I take my Baptism seriously?" What does itlook like to walk as a child of the Light? As a member of theBody of Christ, in what ways do you proclaim God's justiceand peace? Finally, in your prayer this week, imagine Godsaying to you at your Baptism and now, "You are my belovedson/daughter and I love you!"

Ordinary TimeGrowing up, I never really liked Ordinary Time. It seemedlong, boring, and without festive celebrations. Since then, Ihave come to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of this longperiod on our liturgical calendar. Ordinary Time is dividedinto two periods. The first begins the day after the Feast of theBaptism of the Lord and ends the day prior to Ash Wednesday(February 10). The second, and longest period, begins afterPentecost and ends the Saturday after the Solemnity of OurLord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The word ordinarymeans "ordered." It is called this because we number theweeks outside of festal time to help us mark the time. InEternity Today: On the Liturgical Year, author Martin Connellstates. "The two spans of Ordinary Time . . . are when thedeeds and teachings of the Old Testament, of the early church, and of Jesus of Nazareth are told to nurture, calm, inspire, and animate God's people at worship" (vol. 2 [New York:Continuum, 2006], 198). It is, then, a season to what it meansto be a disciple of Christ and to practice the faith we profess. As we look ahead to the next five weeks, let us be mindful ofGod's awesome deeds and be inspired to love more fervently.

Thursday, January 21, 2016Memorial of St. Agnes,Virgin and MartyrOur tradition tells us Agnes was beautiful. Many men wantedto marry her, but she promised the Lord she would remain purefor him. In time, she was imprisoned for being a Christian andeventually martyred. Agnes, chosen by God, was an instrumentof goodness in the world. Her life proclaimed God's love forhis people. On this day in Rome, the pope blesses two sheep. The wool from these sheep is used to make the pallium forarchbishops. Another tradition today is to bake a lamb caketo recall the sacrifice Agnes made. As you eat the cake, retellher story and pray for those imprisoned because of theirbelief in Jesus. Today's Readings: 1 Samuel 18:6-9; 19:1-7;Psalm 56:2-3, 9-10a, 10b-ll, 12-13; Mark 3:7-12.

Monday, January 25, 2016Feast of the Conversion ofSt. Paul the ApostleBefore his conversion, Paul persecuted Christians and evensought them out to imprison them. This feast invites us toconsider how our encounters with Christ—whether in thebaptismal waters or in our daily gatherings—transform us.Paul was forever changed on that road to Damascus, and likethe Responsorial Psalm and Gospel command, he goes forthproclaiming the Good News to all people. After this Adventand Christmas season, how will you shed your old self to riseanew with Christ? In what ways will you announce the GoodNews of salvation? Today's Readings: Acts of the Apostles22:3-16 or 9:1-22; Psalm 117:lbc, 2; Mark 16:15-18.

Tuesday, February 2, 2016Feast of the Presentation of the LordAs we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, itmay seem as though we have returned to Christmas Time. The prayers on this fortieth day after Christmas refer to Christas the "Light of the nations." The Gospel reading reminds usthat Jesus is "a light for revelation to the Gentiles" (Luke 2:32).It was Simeon and Anna who recognized the divine child, the King of Glory who became like us to save us from oursins. This feast reminds us that Jesus is truly the light thatbanishes all darkness and purifies all peoples so they mightshare in God's goodness. At Mass today, many parishes willbless the candles used throughout the year. The liturgybegins with the blessing and a candlelight procession to remindus that Jesus is our light in the darkness. Today's Readings:Malachi 3:1-4; Psalm 24:7, 8, 9, 10; Hebrews 2:14-18;Luke 2:22-40 or 2:22-32.
