Base stands ready for Hurricane Irene
CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. –The base commander has ordered the base to assume
Destructive Weather Condition III due to expected destructive weather
impacts from Hurricane Irene.
During DWC III, a destructive weather system with sustained winds of
50 knots or higher is forecasted to affect Camp Lejeune within 48 hours.
The base emergency operations center here has been partially activated
in preparation for Hurricane Irene. At this time, no school or base closings are
planned for Friday based on current forecasts but that may be reevaluated
based on forecast changes. All departments at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune
are assuming normal operations.
Base residents should call the Automated Information System at (910) 451-1717, or log onto www.lejeune.marines.mil or

Corps Community Service updates, please log onto www.mccslejeune.com or

During the course of a destructive weather event, the base emergency
operations center will initiate actions across the base in preparation for
potential landfall of the storm. Preparations include pre-staging of
equipment, personnel, and supplies to assist throughout the stages of theexpected storm. Essential personnel have been recalled and are preparing to
man shelters and key operations centers on the base. The Camp Lejeune
shelters have not opened at this time.

Base residents should also prepare for the potential landfall of by doingthe following:
Evacuations: During a hurricane watch, base residents living in a
storm-surge zone may be ordered to evacuate. Onslow Beach will be
fully evacuated. Military Police will assist in the evacuation, but
residents living near the water should be prepared to evacuate to the
nearest shelter.
Plan care for your pets: Ensure that your pets have the essentials theywill need for survival during destructive weather to include food and
water. If forced to evacuate, ensure that the shelter will accept families
with pets. Onslow County Animal response Teams manage a pet shelter
co-located with a Red Cross shelter at Jacksonville Commons Middle
School. Dogs, cats and caged birds are accepted as long as animals are
accompanied by their owners and those owners stay in the adjacent
emergency shelter.
Prepare a family disaster kit: A family disaster kit provides health,
safety and comfort items necessary to sustain your family should youhave to evacuate or shelter in place. This kit should contain enough
nonperishable food, water, and clothing to sustain each family member
for a minimum of three days. Include a flashlight, radio and spare
batteries. Blankets, ran gear and appropriate footwear are also
important. Special considerations must be made for the young or
disabled. Remember to include baby food, diapers, first aid items,
health and hygiene items, and medicines as appropriate. In addition,
the kit should include copies of important family documents such as
birth certificates and insurance policies. If you evacuate to a shelter orleave the area, bring your kit with you. Vehicles should also be fully
fueled and residents should have enough cash on hand to last a week.
Prepare your home: Any preparations to protect your home should be
made long before landfall of a storm. All outdoor furniture, trash cans,
grills, recycle bins and doormats should be taken indoors or tied down.
