We often hear people ask, "Why me?" I cannot recall even one incident in which the question referred to something positive. It is always, "Why did I get sick?" "Why did I lose my job?", "Why did my daughter have to marry so and so?" It would be a life changing experience to start asking "Why do I have such a great family?", "Why was I born in a time and place in which I never experienced hunger and lack of shelter?" "Why do I have access to endless forms of communication enabling me to connect with my loved ones?” I made myself a cup of coffee this morning. I smelled it, but paused before I took the first sip. And then I asked myself, "Why me?" Why do I live in a beautiful part of the world, where I can make a cup of excellent coffee in minutes? Why is it not me who lives in a small village in Ethiopia, who works all my life in hard conditions and (despite "fair trade") cannot even afford the coffee I grow? Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do (except on Yom Kippur) is make coffee. The first cup

gives me just enough energy to make the second and then I am ready to start my day. But that is not the way I

was brought up. When I was a child, I was taught that immediately upon opening my eyes I should recite the

prayer of Mode Ani, “I am grateful to you Oh God for restoring my soul to me.” Judaism teaches us that the

first thought formed in one's head should lead to the first words uttered, "I thank you".

The Hebrew term for gratitude is hakarat ha tov – recognition of the good. This attitude of being grateful

begins with being aware of the good that is already ours. According to the teaching of Musar, Jewish Ethics,

there are four steps to gratitude:

1. Recognize the good that you possess.

2. Acknowledge that it is a gift, not something you deserve.

3. Identify the source of the gift, whether it’s God or a human being.

4. Express your gratitude.

I recently read an interview with Sting, the former front man for the band Police, who stated that his children should not expect

to inherent his tremendous fortune. He wants them to work hard themselves so they will not take all the gifts in their lives for

granted. Inheritance aside, the truth is that most of what we have we did not earn: our life, the functions of our bodies, talents, the

families we are born in to, and the people who care about us.

We often hear people ask, "Why me?" I cannot recall even one incident in which the question referred to something positive. It is

always, "Why did I get sick?" "Why did I lose my job?", "Why did my daughter have to marry so and so?" It would be a life

changing experience to start asking "Why do I have such a great family?", "Why was I born in a time and place in which I never

experienced hunger and lack of shelter?" "Why do I have access to endless forms of communication enabling me to connect with

my loved ones?”

I made myself a cup of coffee this morning. I smelled it, but paused before I took the first sip. And then I asked myself, "Why

me?" Why do I live in a beautiful part of the world, where I can make a cup of excellent coffee in minutes? Why is it not me who

lives in a small village in Ethiopia, who works all my life in hard conditions and (despite "fair trade") cannot even afford the

coffee I grow?

“Tov L’hodot La Adonai, It is good to give thanks to God.”

Happy Thanksgiving

FROM THE PRESIDENT Mark Slifkin

Another Yom Kippur is in the books – thank you Rabbi Alon for fantastic and engaging sermons. The Yom

Kippur sermon on Interfaith was very intriguing and I am sure we will hear more in the near future on your

vision since reaching out to Interfaith Families is one of your core goals.

Thank you Men’s Club and Volunteers, led by Paul Steidle, for building another fantastic Sukkah. This year

the Sukkah was used by many TBA organizations including The One School and the Religious School, and for many events

such as the Men’s Club Meeting, Friday night Services, the new ‘ISH’ group, and parents Tuesday Schmoozeday in the

Sukkah.

Simchat Torah: If you have not attended this event in the past, please try and attend next year. Hundreds of members were

present as we fully unrolled and rerolled the Torah with Rabbi Alon & Julia Brody-Barre (our Bat Mitzvah of the weekend)

reading the first and last passages. To see the look on the faces of our children seeing the actual words and touching the Torah

scroll was extremely rewarding – just look at the pictures on our Facebook page.

Thank you to Amy Russell and the PTO for the additional artificial turf for The One School – looks great and I am sure the

kids love it.

BOARD UPDATE: - After many years of service on the Board, including as past secretary, Liz Denmark has stepped down.

Harvey Silverman has been appointed to that Board position. Replacing Harvey as the Men’s Club Representative is Jack

Tenenbaum. Congratulations to both and we express our gratitude to Liz for her extensive work and support of the Board.

As I mentioned last month in my Scribe article, your Board held a retreat in August. At the retreat we established four Strategic

Working Groups (SWGs) for this fiscal year. The first two are our Interfaith initiative, led by Rabbi Alon, and the revamping

of our Religious School program, led by Alissa Frankel, both of which were mentioned during the High Holy Days. You will

be hearing and seeing more about each in the coming months.

The remaining two strategies, facility upgrade/expansion and funding are included as part of the Facility Strategic Planning

Group, which was discussed in Hal Baseman’s January Scribe article. The need to continue those efforts was evident during

the High Holy Days and with the increased Religious School registrations. The Facility Planning Group has completed its first

phase by evaluating our current facilities and reviewing options. There will be additional updates and discussions at the Town

Hall meeting on February 22, 2015 at 9:30am.

UPDATE – You did it!! The total non-perishable food drive on Yom Kippur for the Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s

Services project Isaiah – exceeded last year by 30% - almost 2,000 pounds! Thank You!!

TBA FACT – FAMILY PROMISE – Quarterly, TBA acts as the host for Family Promise. We have now hosted 9 times for a

week each. That means TBA members have done the following: Prepared and participated in the almost 600 meals they have

provided for the people staying and stayed 63 nights at the Church facility - WOW that is a very important Social Action

activity of TBA. If you are interested in supporting Family Promise please contact Audrey Ades, Marcy Isdaner or Debby

Baker (who is the President of the local Chapter) or check out the website at http://www.familypromise.org/?q=content/

Florida.

Our Board member names are always listed on the first page of the Scribe – talk to them anytime about your thoughts,

suggestions and ideas – our tag line ALL OF US TOGETHER only works if we have YOUR input!

Scribe articles are great and contain interesting tidbits about TBA – enjoy them. Call me at 561-222-8350 if you have ANY

questions or just wish to chat. Email works also: [email protected].

SISTERHOOD SCOOP Lois Remick

It takes a “shtetl” to provide programming! (While Hillary did not come from either a village or a shtetl, I believe the end result is

the same.) The shtetl I am talking about is our community of Temple Beth Am members. I want to thank some very special TBA

members who helped make our September programs so successful, but whose names were inadvertently omitted from this column

in the last issue of The Scribe: Bob Feller and Rich Remick for preparing food and helping in so many ways; Dotty Wisch for

buying and donating the beautiful plants that served as table centerpieces, and Karen Feller for taking care of those plants and

delivering them to TBA on Sunday morning; Carole Levine, Lois Edelstein, CK Tenenbaum, and Judy Rosenthal for greeting

and seating attendees at our September bagel breakfast meeting. Thank you all!

If you're reading this issue of the Scribe prior to our Sunday, November 2, General Membership Meeting & Program, you're

invited to join us at 9:30am in the Social Hall. The program, Empowering Yourself: Safety Awareness and Self Defense for

Women, will be led by TBA's own Howard Freedland and his colleague Robert Neier. Dress comfortably if you'd like to

practice some of the moves they demonstrate, or learn while simply sitting and observing. A light nosh will be provided. Free for

all women, but please RSVP to Debbie Schmidt ([email protected]) so we know how many to plan for.

Did you know Maggie Anton is the featured speaker for our Paid-up Membership Luncheon on Sunday, January 25, 2015?

She will be talking about her newly published book: Rav Hisda’s Daughter: The Enchantress. If you would like to pre-order a

copy of the book, to read before she discusses it, Sisterhood is here to help! Just contact Carole Levine ([email protected])

who will be placing a book order with a small, independent bookseller, Classic Bookshop of Palm Beach. The cost of the book is

$18.02. Make your check payable to Classic Bookshop and drop off your check at TBA to the attention of Carole Levine on

or before November 14. The book will be available for pick-up at TBA around November 23.

Look for more info about our extraordinary Membership Luncheon in the December issue of The Scribe and in flyers soon to be

available in the Temple lobby. Remember, paid–up members are free but there is a charge for their guests. If you have not yet

joined Sisterhood, send in your annual dues and membership form, so this Luncheon will be free for you too!

This year, our Sisterhood is participating in the annual JCC Celebrating Sisterhood event along with seven other north county

Sisterhoods. Every TBA woman will be receiving a formal invitation by mail for this program – a luncheon with a presentation by

Nancy Sharpe, author of Both Sides Now - that will take place on Tuesday, December 9, at 11:00am at Temple Beth David in

Palm Beach Gardens. More information about this event will be included in the December issue of The Scribe.

Hope to see you at these Sisterhood events! Kulanu!

It is that time of year when we start thinking of holidays. Thanksgiving is soon upon us and Thanksgiving makes me think

of INTERFAITH SERVICE. The Interfaith Service is a wonderful, warm, spiritual Service that has been held for the

last 18 years. It takes place the night before Thanksgiving and is made up of the clergy and choirs of Temple Beth Am, St.

Peter Catholic Church and JupiterFirst Church. Each year it is hosted by one of the three. The host congregation bakes

cookies and provides beverages for after the Service. It is attended by not only the congregations of the places of worship

but people from the area who have heard what a wonderful experience it is. Last year, over 1,200 people attended when it

was held at Temple Beth Am.

This year the service will be at JupiterFirst Church and Rabbi Alon will be giving the sermon.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 26 at 7:00pm for the Interfaith Service. You owe it to yourself

to attend. It is a wonderful start to the holiday season and once you attend you will be sure to do so every year.

If you want to sing with the combined choirs during the Service, contact

Brett Tancer at [email protected].

BOOK CLUB Edie Wolf

The TBA Book Club is an informal group that meets four times a year on Mondays at 10:30am at the Temple. We

usually go out for lunch afterwards. I will send out email reminders of upcoming dates and the books we will read. If

you have not attended the Book Club before but would like to receive email reminders about upcoming meetings, please

give me your contact information. Any questions or suggestions may also be directed to me at [email protected] or

443-223-9729.

On Monday, November 3 at 10:30am we will discuss our first book of the season: JOY

COMES IN THE MORNING by Jonathan Rosen - Deborah Green is a woman of passionate

contradictions--a rabbi who craves goodness and surety while wrestling with her own desires

and with the sorrow and pain she sees around her. Her life changes when she visits the hospital

room of Henry Friedman, an older man who has attempted suicide. His parents were murdered

in the Holocaust when he was a child, and all his life he’s struggled with difficult questions.

Deborah’s encounter with Henry and his family draws her into a world of tragedy, frailty, love,

and, finally, hope. [Paperback: 400 pages]

Please let me know if you have a suggestion for where we should meet for lunch!

Subsequent books will be:

MY 15 GRANDMOTHERS – Genie Milgrom

THE MUSEUM OF EXTRAORDINARY THINGS – Alice Hoffman

Temple Beth Am 10 November 2014

The High Holy Days are over! Temple Beth Am showed the community what a wonderful, warm and welcoming

congregation we truly are. Under the leadership of Rabbi Alon, we again graciously opened our doors to those who

wanted to worship for the High Holy Days and were unable to purchase tickets. We did 2 additional Evening Services to

accommodate these people. (It also gave our congregants and those who purchased tickets other Service choices on the

evenings of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur.) The overwhelmingly positive feedback we received was just unbelievable!

Our congregants are extremely supportive of what Rabbi Alon has offered the community, and those who benefitted by

our congregation’s generosity have responded with the greatest appreciation.

Rabbi Alon and Cantor Jessica were superb! Thank you, Rabbi Alon. Even after all these years, I am still blown

away by Rabbi Alon’s sermons and the unbelievable way he delivers them WITHOUT NOTES! We are so lucky to

have such an extraordinary rabbi as Rabbi Alon. Thank you, Cantor Jessica. Cantor Jessica’s voice was just beautiful.

It filled the room with sweetness. Her presence on the bimah is both calming and spiritual. Thank you again Rabbi

Alon & Cantor Jessica for making our High Holy Days so wonderful. I must also thank our fantastic Music Director,

Brett Tancer. I cannot begin to list everything he did behind the scenes to ensure that things ran smoothly. This year,

he was the glue that bonded our clergy team, the musicians and the sound engineers together. Great job, Brett!!

Thank you Gali and Eric Weiner for providing dinner for those of us who worked on Erev Rosh Hashanah and Kol

Nidre. Dinner was delicious and greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Arline Slifkin for her kugel and Maureen Cohen

for her apple crisp.

Thank you Richard Remick for everything you do to help the Temple get ready for the High Holy Days. I cannot

imagine running the High Holy Days without you. Thank you for working with me and being my partner and for

EVERYTHING you do, not just during the High Holy Days, but throughout the year. Along with the countless hours of

work Richard does, he also organizes the ushers. (See his note on the next page in the Scribe.)

Sisterhood: Thank you for taking care of Selichot with the dinner and getting the candles ready and handing them out

during the Selichot Service. This is a beautiful Service and your help makes it even more beautiful. The Sisterhood also

prepared the gifts of apples, honey and a shofar that was given to every child after the Children’s Rosh Hashanah

Service. The kids absolutely LOVE getting these gifts, and the Temple thanks the Sisterhood for doing this.

Break-the-Fast: Once again, Temple Beth Am offered a light break-the-fast to anyone who wanted to stay and break-

the-fast with us at the end of Yom Kippur. I cannot thank Bruce Cohen, John Marzina, Gideon Kroyter and Eric Weiner enough for taking care of this giant task for me. They did the planning, shopping, chopping, slicing, and

even made the tuna and egg salad! Thank you Jackie Baseman for the kugels. Thank you to Alfredo Montes and his

crew for setting up the food and putting it all together. Alfredo and his crew did a remarkable job of getting the tables

out and ready within minutes of the end of the Service so we could sit comfortably and enjoy our food. Thank you to

those who made donations to help offset the costs of the Break-the-fast. (See a list of names in the donations section of

the Scribe.)

Yizkor Book: Thank you Sharon Holinstat for taking care of the Yizkor Book. Sharon has been doing this now for

many years and I am so very grateful to her. I count on her immensely!!! Thank you Sharon, so very much! By the

way, if you did not pick up a Yizkor Book during the Yom Kippur Afternoon Service, we have them in the office.

Come by and I’ll give you one.

Once again, our Temple family rose to the challenge of giving food during our High Holy Days Food Drive benefitting

the Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service. Thank you to Debby Baker, Marcy Isdaner and Audrey Ades for

taking care of this remarkable mitzvah.

To my husband, Hal Baseman - thank you for being there for me, and for jumping in where ever and whenever I need

you. Thank you for dealing with the security people and the parking and the greeting. I am very grateful to you

knowing that I don’t have to worry about what is going on outside the building. Thank you for your unending patience!

I love you.

And, last but not least, thank you to my partners Margot Hauser and Carol Sleeper for all their help and support. It

was an exceptionally crazy few months leading up to the High Holy Days. The office staff was in overdrive, but we did

it!

It takes the hands of many people to “run the show” and I know I must be forgetting someone! Please forgive me if I

have failed to mention you by name, but know that your help was greatly appreciated.

From the first sermon Rabbi Alon gave during the High Holy Days, we learned to reduce the use of our iPhones and

iPads when others are present, and in later sermons to help and be kind to each other. The list of ushers below did just

that, in many ways. They greeted, handed out and collected prayer books after Services, and in general helped those

who attended Services. While the Men’s Club is the supporter of this program, the Sisterhood members that participated

need to be thanked for their service, too. For those who did not participate in ushering, please think about doing so next

year.

Thank you to Carol Sleeper, Debbie Baseman, Margot Hauser, Alfredo Montes and staff, Rabbi Alon, Cantor

Jessica and Brett Tancer for all of the behind the scenes work you do well before the High Holy Days and after to

make the Services as beautiful and meaningful as they are.

Dear Men of Temple Beth Am,

O.K., O.K…..It’s apparent that this is about books!

And if you enjoy reading (and I have reason to believe that you DO!) you’re invited to join your friends at Temple Beth

Am, in a new, MEN’S BOOK CLUB of our very own!

The idea, which has worked well for our ladies and elsewhere, is for a group of us men to gather together every 30 days

or so to meet, share some tall tales, have a light lunch at a local spot, and spend an hour or more discussing a pre-

assigned “Book of the Month.” My current thoughts are to alternate books of fiction and non-fiction, both paperback and

hardcover, with some available at the library, too.

Are you interested in joining the group! Please let me know by either calling me at 745-2170, or sending me an e-mail

response ([email protected]), or by calling the Temple office and leaving a message of interest. Based on the

response, I’ll make initial arrangements and notify you of specific details in advance of our first meeting. Once we get

rolling, each participant will be encouraged to offer suggestions regarding the next selection to read, the date of the next

meeting, etc.

Remember, gentlemen, “The end of reading is not more books, but more life!”

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL David Sherman, MJEd

Director of Education

Shalom!

November is a short school month, but still active! With the High Holy Days behind us, school is finally getting into a

smooth rhythm and our new students are already feeling part of our community of learners. Please, when you see a

‘new’ face (kids & parents) - stop and introduce yourself; extending a warm ‘hello’ – that may be just what will bring

a smile to your fellow members!

The kindergarten – 2nd graders visited Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in October for a private tour of the sanctuary, with

Rabbi Alon & Alissa Frankel (our new Youth Director) there to greet them. It was called a Teva Trek (Nature Hike)

and our Israeli shlichim, Shani & Nir Boneh, were also there to share a connection to Israel. This program was a joint

venture of Temple Beth Am, the J & L Friedman Commission for Jewish Education and the PJ Library, and, of course,

the wonderful staff of Busch Wildlife!

Great news! Our Religious School is growing – we have a huge Kindergarten class – and many of our other grades

have grown, with many new students too! Shalom Chai is off to a strong start too, also with new students joining us.

If you know any Jewish teens who would like to try out Shalom Chai, please let me know who they are and I will

invite them to join us!

Here are highlights of what’s coming up this month – we hope that you will be able to join us:

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT Alissa Frankel, Youth Director

All three of our youth groups have been off to a great start this year! The JAMTY Board had a

retreat to create goals and programming ideas for the year, then we did aerial yoga for fun!

JAMTY & JAMTY Jr. kick-off at Planet Air was a huge success – we had 30 teens join us to

“bounce” into the new year. Cochavim, our Youth Group for 3rd – 5th graders, had a blast bowling

and solving a Sukkot mystery.

The year has just begun but we are off to a great start. We still have a full calendar ahead with more programs, lounge

nights, lock-ins, Orlando trip, etc. for all the different age groups! Please follow us on Facebook at JAMTY/JAMTY Jr.,

Instagram at JAMTY_TBA, or sign up for our monthly Youth Group e-mails with information on all of our upcoming

events!

Here are some highlights and new editions to Temple Beth Am’s Youth Department so far this year:

JAMTY B’nei Mitzvah Certificates

To encourage involvement after a student’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah, students becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah this year will

receive a certificate for one year of free JAMTY/JAMTY Jr. Membership.

College Connection

Temple Beth Am has welcomed back its College Connection Program. We mailed 30 Temple Beth Am college students a

sweet treat for the New Year. A very big thank you to Gali for making the delicious granola! Our next College Connection

goodies will go out in December for Chanukah. If you have a college student that you would like to be included, please let

the main office know their school address.

JAMTY Café

JAMTY Café is now open on Sundays and Tuesdays during Religious School hours. On Sundays, we serve bagels, muffins

and coffee and on Tuesdays we serve pizza, snacks and drinks. We often provide fruit to the students at no charge to

encourage healthy snacking! All the proceeds from JAMTY Café go towards our Scholarship Fund to subsidize our events

and provide financial assistance for NFTY Kallot, if needed.

Upcoming Events

BAT MITZVAH OF

JESSICA MINSKY

With great pride, love, joy and excitement we are thrilled to announce that our daughter,

Sydney Halle, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on November 15, 2014.

Sydney is an 8th grader at the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy. She is a conscientious

diligent student, competitive athlete, club level volleyball player and a talented versatile

musician who enjoys playing piano, bass guitar, singing and performing in her rock band,

Anti-Gravity. She especially enjoys spending summers in the Blue Ridge Mountains of

Cleveland, Georgia with her beloved friends at Camp Barney Medintz.

Sydney has chosen JARC, the Jewish Association for Residential Care in Boca Raton, Florida

as her Mitzvah project. JARC is a wonderful organization that enriches the lives of

extraordinary people with developmental disabilities by providing them with vocational

training, employment opportunities, social opportunities and independent living opportunities. Sydney is collecting new/

gently used G and PG rated DVDs and new/gently used games for the residents at JARC. She is also sponsoring a Bingo

Night at JARC on November 1, 2014 where she and her friends will enjoy a fun filled evening socializing with the

residents. All donations of new/gently used DVDs and games can be delivered to the Mandel JCC Teen Tech Town.

Sydney has been a student at the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy since kindergarten. We would like to thank all of the

teachers, administrators and the entire Meyer Academy community for helping us to instill in Sydney great pride and

appreciation for her Jewish heritage and traditions and a love and understanding of the importance of the state of Israel for

the Jewish people. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Brett Tancer, Cantor Jessica and Rabbi Alon

for all of their time and attention in helping Sydney prepare for this special occasion.

Along with Sydney’s sister and brother, Lindsay and Dylan, we want to congratulate Sydney on this amazing

accomplishment. We cannot wait to celebrate!

Tana and Ryan Copple

We are pleased to announce that our daughter, Jessica Erin will be called to the

Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on November 8, 2014.

Jessie is a seventh grade Dance major at Bak Middle School of the Arts. She is also a

member of the Dance Theater of Florida Company. Jessie enjoys spending time with

her fellow students and dancers.

Jessie began her religious education as a 2 year old with Ms. Ruti at the Temple

preschool and has progressed through the years with so many wonderful teachers.

We are very grateful to Rabbi Alon, Brett Tancer, Cantor Jessica, David Sherman (and the Religious School staff), Paula

Deakter (and the preschool staff), Margot Hauser, Carol Sleeper and all the others at the Temple who helped bring about this

milestone event in Jessie’s life. We are very proud of her hard work, generous spirit, compassionate heart as well as her

eagerness to learn, experience, and contribute.

BAR MITZVAH OF

MARC ALINTOFF

NOVEMBER 22, 2014

BAT MITZVAH OF

BROOKE SHAINMAN

We are thrilled and proud to announce the Bat Mitzvah of our daughter, Brooke Sydney

Shainman on November 22, 2014.

Brooke is a 7th grader at Jupiter Middle School where she is in the Culinary Arts program.

She enjoys cooking, playing soccer, drawing, and hanging out with her brother Ben. In

addition, Brooke loves anything having to do with the computer--especially playing Elsword,

doing digital design and making her own movies.

Brooke's passion for art and her desire to help kids led to her Bat Mitzvah project--an online

store with her own creations: "MITZVAHDIGS". Earnings from Brooke's store "MITZVAHDIGS" (zazzle.com/

Mitzvahdigs*) will benefit JAFCO--The Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Organization. Brooke will contribute specifically

to the group home program. It's a special place where children who are unable to live with their own family can live in a

loving family-like setting.

Brooke has been a part of TBA since preschool--from Ms. Rachel's "3" class all the way to the Shining Stars with Ms. Wendy

& Ms. Rhea. We would like to give a big thank you to Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, Brett Tancer, and all of the Hebrew

teachers for your time and energy helping Brooke prepare for this very special day.

Amy and Jon Shainman

We are proud to announce that our son, Marc Ryan Alintoff, will be called to

the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 15, 2014.

Marc is an 8th grade student at the Benjamin School. He enjoys playing

baseball for the 13u North Palm Beach Whitecaps and for his middle school

team.

Marc's ongoing mitzvah project involves collecting gently used baseball

equipment for a program called "pitch in for baseball". The equipment is

distributed around the world to baseball teams where there are kids in need.

We would like to thank Brett Tancer, Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, David

Sherman and all of Marc’s Temple Beth Am teachers for helping him prepare

for this special day.

We are very proud of Marc and look forward to sharing this special day with the congregation and our family and

friends.
