Complex and challenging behaviours are oftenmisunderstood and viewed as negative or disruptivebehaviour.In this workshop participants will identify behaviour as acommunication tool highlighting an unmet need, andexamine behaviour as an interaction with others or anenvironment that may challenge staff and/or community understanding. Through reviewing past and presentbehaviour management techniques participants will
understand the benefit of both proactive and reactivestrategies, effective communication and managing their own behaviour in a crisis situation.
John Fletcher has worked in the community services sector for almost 30years working with individuals with cognitive impairment, intellectualimpartment and mental health in the aged care, disability and welfaresectors. John has worked as a support worker, in coordination andmanagement roles. John has been actively involved in lobbyinggovernment and key organisations. John’s knowledge of the communitysector has allowed him to work in the Commonwealth Public Service,having worked for Centrelink as a Personal Adviser, assisting people toreturn to the workforce after being long term unemployed, CALD, prisonrelease, refugees and mature aged. John has coordinated the trainingfor House with No Steps in their program for disadvantage personsreturning to the workforce and more recently John has joined Synapse tocoordinate and deliver accredited and non-accredited trainingnationally.
