NEWS & FEATURES

PROGRESS ON OAKLANDS SCHOOL REDEVELOPMENT The junior block (pictured below) will be finished and ready for students by the beginning of Term 4. It will have sunny window seats, a lovely covered deck and private native garden.

The new junior/middle school playground, paid for by PTA fundraising and the Board of Trustees, will also be finished by the beginning of Term 4.

HARAKEKE (FLAX) CARE AND USES Giarne Harrison

In Halswell we are blessed with a lot of harakeke that is Council planted and maintained as well as lots in our own gardens. Harakeke is like any plant; in that it can become overgrown if not attended to properly. It can also be challenging when planted right by pathways or where it spreads into or falls over mowing areas.

Harakeke is a really useful plant - the leaves can be used for weaving; and the korari (stems) can be used to make tī

rakau - for playing stick games. The council has a great website that gives some info: https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/harakeke/

If you'd like to keep the bushes near you in tidy condition here are a few tips.

always say a karakia (a short one is given in this article)

never cut the middle three leaves, they keep the bush alive

start cutting close to the middle leaves and cut as straight down to the ground as possible (this helps rain flow off the cut area)

treat the plant and leaves with respect as they represent our tipuna/ancestors

always wash your hands after handling (harakeke can have a laxative impact)

do not cut at night, in the rain, or whilst menstruating

proper cutting prevents pooling rain, mould and diseases setting in and allows air and sun to circulate

In the article there is a pic showing a well cut back plant (photo taken by Giarne Harrison of some Halswell harakeke) and a graphic from the Council website showing the parts of the plant (sourced from the link provided above). All parts of the harakeke plant need to be disposed as general, red waste as the fibre content means it doesn't break down well as compost. It can be cut into pieces and used as a mulch and weed suppressant. We used to put waste back under the plants but that can sometimes spread disease so that's not common anymore.

If you'd like some help cutting back your plant, I'm happy to help if I have time. You can contact me by email - [email protected] I'm a local weaver and always happy to help when I can. If you have concerns about the harakeke on council land you can snap, send, solve or call the Council to let them know an area needs a tidy up - 941 8999.

HAVE YOU VOTED YET? If you are reading this before midday on the 12th October then it is not too late to get your vote in to elect people onto our local bodies. You should have received voting papers in the mail with your name on them.

If not, then contact the council to do a special vote. If you still have plenty of time you can get them to post papers out to you. If not, then go into Te Hāpua or any other service centre and pick them up there.

Completed voting papers can also be dropped into these same places. NZ Post is suggesting that you need to post your votes at least 1 week before the closing date. If you are casting your vote after the 5th October then you would be best to take your vote in to the CCC or to a service centre.

If you are not yet on the electoral role then you will need to complete a form either online at elections.org.nz or at a council service centre.

Why vote?

Not voting is a great way to get people that you don’t want into council. Some elected members have been elected by a majority of only one vote. In these situations, everyone’s vote really does count.

Not sure who to vote for?

Read through the booklet that comes with your papers and see what you think. It might help to cross out the people that

Page 3: #111 October 2019 WHAT’S ON AT THE HALSWELL OMMUNITY HU · 1 - 2pm Music Therapy with May (booking required) 3.30pm Art Classes with Lihui 5.15pm Stop Drop and Yoga Tue 10 - 12pm

3

you don’t like the sound of, and tick the ones you like, and then go back and decide from a shorter list.

Ask others around you who they are voting for and why. You don’t have to vote the same way as they do but it might help you work out what to think about as you look through the people who are standing for election.

STAYING SAFE IN YOUR WORKPLACE No matter what industry or location you work in, you, your workmates and your employer all have health and safety rights and responsibilities. As a worker, your rights include the right to receive the training and support necessary so that you can do your job safely, the right to any appropriate protective equipment, and the right to stop work if you believe it is unsafe or unhealthy to continue. If you work in a high-risk

industry or in a workplace with 20 or more workers, you can request a health and safety representative and your employer has to appoint one.

You also have responsibilities. You have to take reasonable care of your own health and safety, ensure that you don’t cause harm to others at work, and comply with the health and safety policies and procedures at work.

Employers must have health and safety policies in place that deal with likely safety risks, and ensure that workers get appropriate safety training. “Whether the hazard is to do with heavy machinery, large animals, chemical fumes or highly stressful work conditions – the employer needs to check what the risks are and have procedures in place to mitigate those risks. If an accident does occur the employer must notify WorkSafe.

If you think there is an issue with safety in your workplace, you can tell your health and safety representative or your employer. If nothing seems to be done about your concerns, you can talk to the health and safety representative or your union representative. WorkSafe can get involved if you and the employer are not able to resolve the issue.

To speak to one of our knowledgeable, caring team members phone us on 0800 367 222, we also have information about employment rights on our website www.cab.org.nz.

SUNSHINE FOOTBALL Sunshine Football is a division of the Southwest Football Foundation Trust, and for a decade it has provided year round football for players with

developmental delays in Canterbury's for players aged 5 years to 25 years.

On Saturday 14th September two Sunshine Football teams travelled to Auckland to compete in the "Waitakere Special Olympics Football Tier One Ribbon Day Tournament." Split into two divisions, Sunshine fielded a team in each, competing against teams from Whangarei , Greenhithe, Auckland and Waitakere. The teams were seven aside, with rolling substitutes. Ten volunteer Sunshine Football coaches managed the energetic team members to a second in Division # 1 and a third in Division # 2.

Both teams displayed skills and game knowledge derived from many hours of training. The opposition, while older and more imposing than the Sunshine teams, did not deter the tenacity and unrelenting defence of the Sunshine Football teams which in the end proved to be a winning combination. The sportsmanship displayed by all of the participants was the highlight of the tournament for the parents, caregivers, players and coaching staff.

To enhance the player experience, post an early night and leisurely next morning, the Sunshine squad of 55 visited "Sea Life Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium", a not to miss experience if in Auckland.

The Community Choir Paua Cantata has spaces for new members in the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass sections.

Paua Cantata is a community choir who work towards two main concerts each year – a midwinter concert and a Christmas concert. These concerts are fundraisers for a variety of charities agreed upon by the choir members. They also perform for local events when requested. DO YOU KNOW THE WHEREABOUTS OF THIS PERSON? A family member in Ashburton has asked me to see if anyone has any knowledge about a Margaret Sebire who had owned a lifestyle block with horses between Halswell & Lincoln.

Her father Ralph James Ford married Cora in Woodbury in 1936 and they later divorced. It appears we are looking at the 1960's or 70's.

GROWING GREAT GARDENERS A national search is on for young kiwi gardeners who have a passion for plants and dig gardening.

The Yates Budding Young Gardener competition opens 1 September to children aged 5-15 years, with all levels of capability, who just love spending time in the garden growing things.

The lucky winner will become a Yates ambassador for one year and win an amazing family trip to Hawaii.

Judge and gardening guru, Ruud Kleinpaste said learning how to garden sets children up for life.

“It is becoming a fading skill with many of today’s kids not knowing what a seed is, or where potatoes come from. As our lives get busier and more complex, the art of gardening becomes more important. Producing food is one obvious benefit but caring for a plant can teach children about responsibility as well as science, nature and nutrition. Taking time to learn the basics of gardening brings so many rewards,” said Mr Kleinpaste.

All entrants will need to complete the entry form, answer a number of gardening questions and either submit a short video sharing their garden and what they get up to in it or photographs.

Seven regional winners will be selected by the judges and they will win a massive Yates Budding Young Gardener Hamper valued at over $300. An overall winner will be selected from the seven regional winners and will be off to Hawaii with their family.

The five day visit will include flights, accommodation and a rental car plus tickets to some of the islands wonderful natural attractions. The grand prize also includes spending a day in your garden with a Yates horticulturist picking up some great skills and tips.

To find out how to enter and terms and conditions visit https://www.yates.co.nz/budding-young-gardener/. Entries close Sunday 6th October 2019 and the grand prize winner will be announced during National Gardening Week (21-28 October).
