When Respiratory Troubles Don’t Go Away If you’ve had a cold (and who hasn’t?), you know what it feels like to have trouble breathing. For people with respiratory diseases such as asthma, breathing troubles can become a permanent, rather than temporary, problem. If you have a respiratory disease, getting the right treatment and learning how to manage your condition can help you breathe more easily. In the early stages of a respiratory disease, you might just feel tired. Other symptoms include:
feeling short of breath, especially during physical activity or activities such as climbing stairs or carrying groceries
feeling as though you cannot get enough air a cough that won’t go away coughing up blood or mucus uncomfortable or painful breathing a feeling of tightness in the chest wheezing, or a squeaky sound when you breathe
Your symptoms depend on your illness and how advanced it is. Your overall health matters, too. Having another chronic illness or being overweight could make your symptoms worse. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, talk with your doctor. Source: U.S. Department of Health & Human Services
NO BINGO November 1st & 8th

COPD
Get the Facts
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and (in some cases) asthma. What causes COPD? In the U.S., tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, although exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role. In the developing world, indoor air quality is thought to play a larger role in the development and progression of COPD than it does in the U.S. Who has COPD? Chronic lower respiratory disease, primarily COPD, was the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fifteen million Americans report that they have been diagnosed with COPD. More than 50 percent of adults with low pulmonary function were not aware that they had COPD. Therefore, the actual number may be higher. The following groups were more likely to report COPD:
People ages 65 to 74 years Non-Hispanic whites Women Individuals who were unemployed, retired, or unable to work Individuals with less than a high school education People with lower incomes Individuals who were divorced, widowed, or separated Current or former smokers (including those exposed to second-hand smoke) Those with a history of asthma
How can COPD be prevented? Avoid inhaling tobacco smoke and home and workplace air pollutants to help prevent developing COPD. Early detection of COPD might change its course and progress. A simple test, called spirometry, can be used to measure pulmonary (lung) function and detect COPD in anyone with breathing problems. If you have concerns that you or a family member may have COPD, talk with your doctor. Treatment options are available, including medications and pulmonary rehabilitation, which teaches COPD management strategies. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
