IAM a great one for ‘procrastinating’, what about you? I

would love to be one who decides to do something and get on with it. I constantly drive myself mad putting things off.

When you are a procrastinator, it affects every facet of your life. The dictionary defines ‘procrastinator’ as somebody who puts off doing something until a later time.

That describes me, I have been putting off doing things all my life and put myself under huge pressure.

I decided I must research on this phenomenon and was lucky to find an old copy of a Toastmaster Magazine dating back to 1994 with an article on ‘Overcoming

Procrastation’. It was written by

freelance writer, Charles Downey who lives in California. He was reviewing a book by Burka and Yuen, co-authors of Procrastination: Why You Do It; What to Do About it.

It is said that everybody dilly dallies at some time, but for some it is a way of life, making their life and that of others miserable. Some chronic delayers are afraid of success and

failure, others use it as a way to resist authority, some foot-draggers do it as a way of avoiding any real test of their abilities.

Many have a low frustration tolerance and want things simple and easy. People sometimes use it to protect themselves from the emptiness between finishing one project and starting another. In retirement, the most common procrastination is “I’m too old”.

Here are some of the

helpful solutions:1. Use reminders: put up a ‘to do’ list in a prominent place in your home, delete items to measure progress.2. The five-minute plan: Commit yourself to work on your project for five minutes, chances are you will stick at it once you get started.3. Do the easy part first: That gets you started and you may surprise yourself by completing it.4. Ask for help: Some people don’t like working alone, so ask for help.5. Get proper instructions: Many people just don’t know how to start a task.

I hope those hints will help both you and me and we will get started and before we know it.

Breda Raggett

And don’t dilly dally on the way!

THE SCEILP INN, College Road is one of Kilkenny’s finest peripheral pubs. It is located at the College Road/Callan Road roundabout, opposite Hotel Kilkenny and is popular with locals and visitors.

Owned by Seamus and Statia Rafter, the Sceilp is a local which was run for years by Seamus’s late father,

Jim. It has always enjoyed a good clientele of mixed ages. Staff are very

friendly and enjoy a bit of banter with locals. It is a noted venue for watching sporting events on television and is particularly popular for hurling, soccer and rugby. Sporadic music sessions with local entertainers are enjoyed but

it is for its brilliant pint of porter that this pub is probably best known. The pub has won the hearts of locals, many of whom have been enjoying their Guinness at the Sceilp for up to half a century, and is very popular with visitors who return again and again for their favourite Kilkenny pint.Back to the days when the Cassidy family owned this establishment, the Sceilp, has had a reputation for its creamy porter. The Rafter family are proud of the fact that the pub still enjoys the respect of those who are prepared to settle for nothing but the best.

FILM The Ides of MarchDirector George Clooney

Ryan Gosling follows his stylish turn in ‘Drive’ and throwaway character part in ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ with

George Clooney’s solid political thriller. He plays the savvy media manager of Clooney’s Democratic candidate in a primary race. He is courted by his opponent’s campaign director Paul Giamatti while his boss (Philip Seymour Hoffman) tries to win over a vital nomination from a powerful Congressman. Meanwhile Gosling becomes embroiled in an affair with a young intern (Rachel Evan Wood) as his career suddenly disintegrates. Several revelations and nasty double –dealing leave all the players and the audience a lot more cynical about the political process and it’s cruel machinations.George Clooney has talked big about this being an attempt at those paranoid 70’s movies Robert Redford made ‘Three Days of the Condor’ , ‘The Candidate’ and ‘All the President’s Men’. However it recalls more an episode of ‘The West Wing’ than anything else and fans of that series will find much to enjoy here which is aimed squarely at an adult audience. There is some excellent dialogue and plotting while the smart photography and editing really impress. Clooney knows how make a scene look

interesting but more importantly when it is time to end it.This film would be worth seeing for the cast alone. There is not a duff moment in the playing where they are all given lots of room by the actor-director to chew scenery at will. Ryan Gosling holds his own against these heavyweights even if his characterisation is a little bit underwritten. This is probably to allow Hoffman, Giamatti and Clooney himself to display their chops. However the real surprise is Rachel Evan Wood who captures perfectly that hinterland between gauche and cocky every young woman survives in.This movie proves that George Clooney, Kilkenny’s long lost son is no slouche when it comes to directing. He builds on the reputation which he made in ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ and shows that the flimsy ‘Leatherheads’ was just a blip. When he has a serious subject to ruminate on he creates something which entertains as well as informs. The corrupt nature of American politics is revealed here where every idealistic candidate from Kennedy and Clinton to Obama is compromised by corporations, Congress or their libido before they set foot on the lawn of the White House. Ryan Gosling’s fans hopefully will be drawn to this serious film which is a more bit middlebrow than his recent indie fare. However there is much to enjoy for students of fine acting and people who like a movie which demands the use of their brain. – DARRAGH BYRNE
