power by the mid-1400s, AND technological innovations made long voyages possible.

II. A Race for Riches Portuguese Explorers Portugal took the lead in 1420

Prince Henry the Navigator funded voyages to Africa.

1488 Bartholomeu Dias rounded the southern tip of Africa

Later, Vasco de Gama made it around Africa and to the coast of India. Got a ton of spices, brought it back to Portugal, and made a profit of several thousand percent!

Portugal expanded search for spices. They established a port near the Molucca Islands (SPICE ISLANDS).

Stole control of the spice trade from the Muslims and Italians.

How did they do this? Guns! Awesome sailing skills!

Spanish Explorers Columbus, 1492 Thought he reached Asia, but actually

reached Bahamas Claimed the island for Spain and named it

San Salvador (“Holy Savior”) Did not find gold, so explored other islands

throughout Caribbean

Spain funded three more explorations

Columbus became an empire builder, not an explorer

Claimed land he “discovered” for Spain, transforming the islands of the Caribbean into colonies

Ferdinand Magellan 1519 King of Spain funded his voyage 230 men and 5 ships departed and sailed

for months straight. Had to eat sawdust! Finally discovered the Philippines. Magellan

was killed in a local war, only 18 men and 1 ship made it back to Spain in 1522

They were the first to circumnavigate (go all the way around) the world

1500, Portuguese explorer, Cabral, reached modern-day Brazil

Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer for Spain, reached the East coast of South America. First to realize the new land was NOT part of Asia… the “New World”

German mapmaker named the new continent, “America” after Vespucci
