Hello Everyone,
Spring is here at last. Events are popping up just like new
spring growth. Check your Homefront so you don’t miss a
single one. Take a look online to see what is going on in
other counties since the weather has turned and driving is
more of a pleasure than a chore.
This year’s International Lesson went well. Thank you units
for all your help and support, I could not have done this
without you. Attendance at our Unit 18 Retreat was up and
that made for a very enlightening and rewarding day. Mark
your calendars to attend the next meeting hosted by
Christian County. We will be posting more information as the
date gets closer.
I hope everyone had a great time at the Table Setting
Luncheon, I know I did. We were blessed with great weather
and all of you ladies should be commended for all your hard
work to pull it off.
The more time we spend helping others and attending
functions the more we will learn and grow. Let’s get out there
and let people know about our Home and Community
Education Association. See you around.

The next Safe Sitter class for
girls and boys ages 11 to 13 will
be held on Wednesday, July 9
and Thursday, July 10 from 8:00
a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the
Christian County Extension
Office.
The two-day Safe Sitter program is sponsored by
University of Illinois Extension Christian County,
Christian County Home and Community Education
Association, and Taylorville Memorial Hospital.
During the course, students get hands-on practice in
basic life-saving techniques so they are prepared to act
in a crisis, with medical information taught by a certified
professional.
Safe Sitter participants also receive helpful tips to
make them more confident caregivers, learning safety
and security precautions, such as what to do if a
stranger comes to the door and when and how to call
for help. Information on child development and
age-appropriate activities, and the business
aspects of babysitting are also taught.
To become a certified Safe Sitter, students have to
pass a rigorous practical and written test to show
they have mastered the key concepts and have
the skills necessary to handle an emergency.
For a registration form or information, call the
Christian County at 287-7246. There is a limit to
the number of participants we can accommodate
in the class, so register as soon as possible. The
registration fee is $35, and pre-paid registration is
due by Tuesday, July 1.
Registration fees will not be refunded for
cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance.

“Dishing Up with HCEA” the 21st Annual Table Setting Luncheon and Plant Sale Submitted by Debi Kiefer, Secretary
Those who attended the 21st Annual Table Setting
Luncheon and Plant Sale found it sunny outside
and cheerful inside. Dining tables decorated with
canning jars, cookbooks, and cooking items, ten
wonderful table entries set with “Dishing Up with
HCEA” themes, gorgeous hanging baskets, and
beautiful potted annuals greeted those who
entered the U of I Extension auditorium to eat
lunch, view the table entries, and/ or buy plants.
Edinburg Nite Unit’s table setting entry “Dishin’ It
Up Chuckwagon Style” was voted favorite in the
Casual category. “Bon Appétit” the table setting
created by Center Unit was the favorite in the
Elegant category. New Vision 4-H Club’s entry
“Dishing Up Treasure” was selected favorite in the
Youth category. Each received a $10 prize. Mary
Lou Knoseman of Pawnee was the lucky winner of
the door prize, a lovely hanging basket of pink,
purple, and yellow petunias.
The Table Setting Luncheon and Plant Sale was
once again a successful fundraiser. During the
luncheon over 200 meals were served. Over 70 of
these were carry-outs. $1873 has been turned in
for tickets purchased and/or sold by members and
those bought at the door. So far none of the major
expenses have been paid. The profit from the
luncheon remains unknown until all expenses have
been submitted and paid. $1,614 was taken in at
the Plant Sale. Expenses were $1,101.25 which
included cost of plants and change leaving a profit
of $512.75.
Thank you to all who helped make this event a
success.
