CONTEXT & DEFINITION

Context
Stating the obvious:
An aircraft makes money when flying
An aircraft costs money whether it is flying or not
Optimized aircraft availability is crucial to profitable operations
Airlines feedback: need decision criteria allowing to Maximize
revenue at a reasonable cost
Many Airlines use to monitor availability but scope and definition
are different from one to the other
The aircraft availability for Revenue Service is a key
information for airlines
Need to get a standard

Definition and scope
Definition:
Aircraft Operational Availability Measures the capability that an aircraft is
determined to be fit for revenue service within Airline Operations
Scope:
Aircraft operational availability is obtained by focusing on unavailability reasons
Operational unavailability covers maintenance activities, both planned and unplanned, for technical reasons, having a direct impact on aircraft
operations
it includes factors that an aircraft manufacturer can influence and measure

Benefits & constraint
Benefits
Monitor availability vs. targets
Benchmark with other airlines
Optimize grounding times
Assess maintenance organization / strategy vs. availability
Optimize aircraft availability
Constraint:
The aircraft operational availability definition needs data collection
Some data is already reported (e.g. delays etc.)
Some data is not reported today (e.g. Check overrun duration, AOG time)

&
STANDARD

Data Collection
11-13 September 2013 9th IATA Maintenance Cost Conference - Dublin
Unavailability data are reported at event level
Unavailability data usually comes from maintenance
planning team within M&E organisation
Data are generally extracted from Airline Maintenance
Information System (MIS) but no automatic extract is
feasible
need a standard to support data collection (data elements,
format etc.)
