Annual Christmas Open House

December 10th, 2011 Saturday

Mark your Calendars!Last years Open House was a huge

success thanks to all the wonderful people who help make baked goods, crafts etc. Christmas is just around the corner again and we are in need of your HELP! Every year we ask the crafty and creative people to put their talents to work making crafts and bakers to help bake for our bake sale to help raise money to care for the homeless animals at our shelter. Crafts can be brought to the shelter anytime between the hours of 10:00am to 4:00pm. Monday thru Saturday starting now until Saturday December l0th. Some items that people look for are tree ornaments, table decorations, crocheted mittens, slippers, scarves and any homemade craft goods are all welcome. ***Saleable items only please*** Items that can be reasonably priced. This is a great place for the children to do their Christmas shopping for their family, friends, teachers, etc. and to help the animals too!

Bake sale goods, such as cookies, pies, rolls, breads, coffee cakes, jellies, candies, brownies etc. are always needed to make the sale a success. If you can label your donated goods (ex: anything that has nuts) would be greatly appreciated especially for those who have allergies. Baked goods can be brought to the shelter the day or two before or the day of the open house.

Santa Claus will be here at NOON to greet all the children, (both young and old) who have special wishes for Christmas. Free coffee, donuts holes and popcorn will be available.

We also have a Christmas Raffle with great prizes. Drawing will be at 4:00pm. that day and you do not have to be present to win. Raffle tickets are available now at the shelter and clinic. If you would like to sell some tickets for us to your friends and neighbors please stop by the shelter to pick some up. Your help is always needed.

Your support as a volunteer is also welcome for that day. If you can help please call the shelter and leave your name and phone number and someone will contact you to set up times. Call 586 731-9210.

Remember our little creatures that cannot help themselves. Let’s make this Open House just as successful as last year or even better.

Decoding Your Pet’s Food label

Choosing the right pet food is very important. Your pet’s behavior, health and overall well-being are affected by the nutrition you provide them. With so many different brands and fancy names to choose from, choosing quality food can be difficult. Taking the time to read and understand the food label can be very helpful.

Understanding the List of IngredientsThe first ingredient by weight is the most important

because there is more of that ingredient than any other. The Association of American Feed Control Officials requires that all dog and cat foods must list the ingredients of their food in order of weight. The top 10 ingredients usually comprise 80% or more of a dry pet food’s entire formula Paying close attention to these ingredients can guide you to choosing quality food for your pet.

Ingredients with High Nutritional ValueReal meat, such as chicken, f ish or lamb, is a

source of high-quality, highly digestible protein. Proteins are essential for growth, maintenance, reproduction, repair and energy. Whole grains such as brown rice, barley and oats supply complex carbohydrates to maintain your dog’s or cat’s energy level, and healthy fiber not found in most processed grains. Veggies and fruit provide essential phytonutrients, antioxidants and enzymes, plus natural vitamins, minerals and fibers that promote and maintain health and wellness.

Lower Quality IngredientsBe sure to watch out for lower quality ingredients

with less nutritional value. By-product meal is one of these less quality ingredients. It is often preceeded by a meat in the name such as “chicken by product–meal”. Just because it has a meat in the name, it doesn’t mean it has the best nutrition. Also watch out for artificial color and chemical preservatives like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, and propylene glycol. These ingredients provide no nutritional value and have been associated with possible side effects. Corn, wheat and soy have been linked to allergic reactions in some dogs.

Ingredient SplittingAnother trick to reading the label is watching

out for ingredient splitting. This is the practice of dividing a high volume, inferior ingredient into separate, lighter weight portions. For example, corn is split into corn meal and corn flour, and rice is split into rice gluten and rice bran. Ingredient splitting allows pet food manufacturers to put lower nutritional quality ingredients farther down the list so it appears as if they do not comprise a large portion of the food, when they really do.

Healthy sounding product names and big name brands may not always be the best choice for pet’s nutrition. Arming yourself with some basic principles of reading the food labels and learning some of the tricks manufacturers use to hide lower quality ingredients will help you in your quest to give the very best to your pet.

Seasonal Reminder:

With the Holidays approaching be careful of your Christmas Plants, especially Poinsettia & Mistletoe can be harmful and deadly to your pet.

Winterize Your Pet!1. With the onset of winter precautions

should be taken to protect your Pets!2. Do not let your indoor pet(s) outside

for long periods of time. Shorthaired breeds like Doberman’s, Chihuahuas, Terriers etc., may need coats or sweaters. Every pet is at risk of frostbite. Most common areas are ear tips, feet & and tips of tails.

3. Outdoor pet(s) should be brought inside the house or have access to a heated garage when the weather gets severely cold. If that's not possible make sure the doghouse is well built, insulated, slanted roof with an elevated floor. Dry straw is excellent bedding material. Doors should be covered with a flap to prevent drafts from the wind. The door should not face the North. Southeast is the best. The size of the doghouse is very important. A house that is too large for your dog will not keep him warm. He needs a house that he can stand

up in, turn around and lay down. His body heat will help keep him warm along with the bedding etc.

4. Outside dogs need more calories in the winter so they can build up fat, which acts as insulation. He needs 2-3 times more calories. Check the dog food bag to increase his food or contact your local vet for more information.

5. Fresh water must be provided several times a day. Pet stores do sell heated dog bowls.

6. Check your pets feet for slush or salt that may stay in their pads and cause irritation.

7. Cats should be kept indoors or in a heated garage that has built in hutches or in a well kept used barn. Cats will seek heat and sometimes sleep in the motor of your car. Be aware of paw prints on your car hood. It's possible that there's a cat getting warm by your engine. Tap on the hood or honk your horn to scare the cat away.

8. By using common sense in the cold months our pets will be safe. Remember that the Michigan Law requires proper shelter for your pet(s) 24 hour per day for the weather, which includes sun, heat, rain, snow, wind etc.

9. Our shelter (during the winter months) gives away a FREE bag of straw for the outside dog. Straw will be available at our shelter after November 1st.
