ABOUT TUBACHRISTMAS ThefirstTubaChristmaswaspresentedonDecember22,1974,atRockefellerPlazainNewYorkCity.ThefirstKansasCityTubaChristmaswaspresentedin1979,whenthegroupperformedforthelightingof theCrownCenterChristmastree.TheKCSymphonyisproudtobepresentingTubaChristmasforthe12thconsecutiveyear.Theeventbringstogetherhundredsof tubaandeuphoniumplayersfromallwalksof lifeaswellasmultiplegenerationsof thesamefamilywhohavemadetheconcertanannualtradition.OnDecember7,2018,theKansasCitySymphonysetaGUINNESSWORLDRECORDS™titleforLargestTubaEnsemblewith835performers,breakingthepreviousrecordof 502performersbyagroupinCaliforniain2007.
ABOUT SCOTT WATSON ScottWatsonisprofessorof tuba-euphoniumattheUniversityof KansasSchoolof Music,anassociationthatdatesbackto1979.Hissoloeffortscanbeheardonhis“Thoughtsof aCow”soloalbum,andtheeducationalrecordings“SteppingStonesforTuba,VolumeI&II,”bothonPotenzaRecords.Hewaselectedandservedaspresidentof theInternationalTubaEuphoniumAssociationfrom1999to2001andcurrentlyservesonthe Association’sadvisoryboard. WatsonisprincipalE-flattubaof theacclaimedFountainCityBrassBandof KansasCity,whichisthemostsuccessfulbrassbandinAmericanhistory,havingwoneightNorthAmericantitlesaswellastheirhistoricScottishOpenwinin2009.Heistheinauguralmusicdirectorandhasbeenconductorof theFreeStateBrassBandsince2014.In2018,heservedasprincipaltubaof theMelbourneSymphonyOrchestrainAustraliaaspartof itsMSOAmbassadorProgram.Whilethere,hetaughtattheConservatoriumof Musicof theUniversityof Melbourne’sVictorinCollegeof theArtsaswellasbeingprincipalE-flattubaof theGlenferrieBrassBand.Watsonisamemberof theInfinityBrassQuintetof theMartha’sVineyardChamberMusicFestivalandtheKansasCityBrassworks.AlongwithfriendWinstonMorris,hefoundedthetuba-euphoniumchamberorchestraSymphoniathatrecordedthreegroundbreakingalbumsonMarkRecords. WatsonhasbeentubistinhiscareerwithensemblesincludingtheSt.PaulChamberOrchestra,BrevardMusicCenterOrchestraandtheCrestedButteMusicFestivalOrchestra,alongwithregularperformanceswiththeKansasCitySymphony.HehasperformedallovertheworldincludingRussia,China,Poland,Germany,Canada,Mexico,theUnitedKingdom,FranceandAustralia.Asaconduc-tor,hehasworkedwithsuchgroupsastheCapitalCityBrassBand,theGlenferrieBrassBand,theMansfieldUniversityBrassBand,theKUBrassEnsemble,theInternationalAll-StarCollegeTubaEnsemble,TheInternationalAll-StarHighSchoolTubaEnsembleandtheThunderAll-StarTubaEuphoniumEnsemble—allonprestigiousconferencesorconcertseries.
