Shane Coleman is presenter of Newstalk Breakfast. Shane is also a columnist with the Times Ireland edition. Humanology: a scientist’s guide to our amazing existenceProfessor Luke O’Neill - Chair of Biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin

Professor Luke O’Neill holds the Chair of Biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin where he leads the Inflammation Research Group. He has a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of London and carried out Post-Doctoral research at Cambridge U.K. His research is in the area of the molecular basis to inflammation with a particular focus on innate immunity, Toll-like receptors, inflammasomes and metabolic reprogramming in macrophage activation.

In 2018 he was named by Clarivates/Thompson Reuters as one of the world’s most influential scientists, being in the top 1% in Immunology. He is co-founder of the Spin-out companies Inflazome and Sitryx, which are developing new treatments for inflammatory diseases. He has won numerous awards for his research including the European Federation of Immunology Societies medal, the International Cytokine and Interferon Society Milstein Award, The Royal Dublin Society Boyle Medal for Scientific Excellence, The Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal for Life sciences. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016. He has recently published a best-selling popular science book entitled ‘Humanology: a scientist’s guide to our amazing existence’.

The Future of Epilepsy Research in IrelandDr Colin Doherty - Consultant Neurologist and Associate Professor of Epilepsy, St James’s Hospital and TCD

Colin Doherty is a Consultant Neurologist at St James’s hospital in Dublin and Associate Professor of Epilepsy at Trinity College Dublin. He trained at UCD in 1991 and completed subspecialty training and his research doctorate in neurology at Beaumont hospital. In 1998 he joined the neurology training programme at Harvard Medical School in Boston and was chief resident there in 2000. After residency he completed two Harvard fellowships one in epilepsy the other in cognitive neurology.

He came back to Ireland in 2003. He has been a staff neurologist in St James’s since 2005. He is the director of the Dublin mid Leinster regional epilepsy service serving a population of 1.2 million. He is currently the National lead for Women’s health in Epilepsy with a particular remit to develop the surveillance programme for Valproate and other epilepsy drugs. He is a recent member of the board of the Health Research Board in Ireland and the National Clinical Effectiveness Committee.
