President's Message - Super Heroes

Nancy Stevens-BrownThis summer Hollywood released two movies about average

folks with super hero powers. If you really want to see genuine super heroes, you can watch them working as volunteers at every vaulting event or club in America.

What We Are Given We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give. Winston Churchill

ative) it makes our hybrid sport more complex than most others. So, this decidedly multifaceted activity requires a variety of factors and talents coming together at once to produce the harmonious bond between horse and human for which we strive.

The most important element of great vaulting is a willing and able crew of supporters who take care of the countless critical details

the invaluable assistance of all types of folks, the best vaulting could never be seen, and the rest would not be safe!

From administrators, announcers, board members, clerks, clean up crew, coaches, costume designers, choreographers, decorations staff, editors, family, friends, gate keepers, grounds keepers, hospitality, judges, judges aids, expert equestrians, managers, music, office crew, office assistants, owners, parents, photographers, ribbon organizers, set up crew, scoring crew, spon-sors, stable manager, timers, trainers, tractor drivers, treasurer, trophy organizers, runners, vaulters, videographers and writers – the AVA’s incredible supporters make our horse sport simply the best!

So, although vaulting super heroes may not wear bulletproof spandex or capes, they spend incalculable hours protecting our sport by arranging for all of the distinctive details that altogether allow vaulting to be safe and effective. You won’t need to look up into the sky, just look our fantastic supporters in the eye and say “Thanks!” Because of them, we can fly!

Carole DwinellThe championships are underway, Na-

tionals included, and people will be seeing the result of some big changes. Per new FEI, USEF and AVA rules, gold level vault-ers will now do a technical freestyle instead of compulsories to the right, the ground jump has been eliminated from individual compulsories and teams are now comprised of six instead of eight vaulters.

The other changes you will see are the result of the USEF High Performance Camps. Vaulters focused on the technical freestyle, worked on understanding and re-lating to the movement of the horse under the tutelage of Katariina Alongi and got one-on-one response to their interpretations of the technical test. The new program was examined on horse and barrel. Judge Sue Detol gave very specific and detailed com-ments on what she saw.

Athletes, coaches and longeurs get an excellent look at the use of mental performance enhancement at the Jerry Lynch portion of the April USET Camp.

High Performance Camp

When asked about the vaulter response to this new challenge, Detol replied that “It depends on what exercise you are talking about. I mean, the men are like, 'Oh my God, the needle!' Some of the women have trouble with the roll-up mount but, for the most part, the feeling I get is that they are having fun with it.” Accompanied by music that now may include vocals for Gold level events, the diversity was amazing.

A high point of the program was the lecture by sports psychologist Jerry Lynch. It was intense and quite interesting. He discussed how the mind and meditation exercises can improve performance. As advisor to NFL, NBA and Olympic ath-letes, he offered some visual and physical challenges to vaulters and coaches during his presentation.

Sara Ike, USEF Vaulting Coordina-tor, introduced the planned High Perfor-mance Program. She said there is “a plan Photos by Julie Dobins

underway for our own horse and longeur program. We would liaise with the AVA but it would be in an ideal world ... a developing vaulting program, a foreign tour program...” When asked about that possible program, Ike said, “The foreign tour program would be, again depending on the available funding, to get European exposure to our top athletes, [have them] spend four to six weeks in Europe under the canopy of the federation and compete as the US delegation, not a club.”

With that on the horizon there is a great deal more interest in the USEF High Performance Clinics. They benefit the elite vaulters and, as they return to their own clubs they spread the information down to the beginning levels.

Watch for the summary of the sport psychology seminar in a future issue of Vaulting World.

2005 - 2008 USEF Vaulting High Performance PlanSara Ike

The 2005-2008 Vaul t ing High Performance Plan (HPP) is a reference guide for individuals both familiar and unfamiliar with vaulting high performance and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). There is quite a bit of cross referencing among the sections il-lustrating the scope and complexity that is inherent in our sport and how all the pieces fit together.

At the conclusion of 008, the Vaulting High Performance Committee will evaluate their execution of the HPP. What goals were met? What programs were success-ful? Where can we improve? Was funding an issue?

We may not be able to implement each and every one of the programs but a critical review at the end of the quadren-nium will serve as a vital benchmark for the future of vaulting high performance in the United States.

Following are excerpts from the program. You may find the complete text at http://www.usef.org/documents/high-Performance/vaulting/2005-2008VHP-PFINAL.pdf

IntroductionThe focus of the 2005-2008 Vaulting

High Performance Plan (HPP) is to develop and implement a strategic plan with the overall goal of winning medals in champi-onship competitions, particularly the 2006 World Equestrian Games (WEG) and 2008 World Championships. The High Perfor-mance Plan outlined here is the natural outcome after our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats were examined, critical success factors determined, the Ath-lete Development Pipeline considered, and an analysis conducted of our international competitors.

Critical Success Factors• Exposure to international competition

in Europe, especially in prominent/prestigious CVIs

• Continuing education and training ses-sions

• Availability of horses capable of cham-pionship performances

• Sufficient funding, so that the High Performance Plan can be fully imple-mented.

Strengths:• Talented athletes• Primary focus is perfor-

mance in World Cham-pionships, and what it takes to win medals

• Experience and depth in all phases of logistical planning

• Internationally experi-enced coaches, trainers, judges, and longeurs available to help toward goals

• Talented, experienced staff and com-mittees who work hard and remain focused on their mission and goals

• Good communication between USEF staff and vaulting community at large

• Ranking list, published weekly during competition season.

Weaknesses:• Shortage of championship level horses

owned by the United States • Shortage of USEF/FEI recognized

competitions in U.S.• Non-diverse geography – most recog-

nized competitions and elite athletes are in California

• Depth and number of U.S. vaulters competing at international level- es-pecially men

• Turnover of vaulters – attend college, join workforce

• Difficulty of raising sufficient funds to implement High Performance Plan

• Weak communication with the national affiliate, the AVA.

Opportunities:• Invitations to CVIs• Sponsorship and development oppor-

tunities to ensure that HPP programs can be implemented

Threats:• Shortage of FEI recognized judges in

U.S. • No control over condition and sound-

ness of borrowed European horses used at Championships

• Subjectivity/lack of clarity at veteri-nary inspections

• Inherent subjectivity in the sport- the U.S. is an “outsider”

Athlete Development PipelineGrassroots Level

Skill level of a vaulter is partially de-termined by medal exams that are admin-istered by the AVA and the USEF division in which a vaulter competes. The USEF must establish a clear athlete pipeline with the AVA to identify talent early; e.g. the AVA hosts pre-USEF training sessions for the lower level vaulters, preparing them for USEF training sessions.Developing Vaulter Program

A Developing Vaulter Program will be established to help develop future high performance athletes. The program will be run by the Developing Vaulter Program Administrator. The Developing Vaulter Program Administrator (DVPA) will attend a minimum of one (1) USEF Competition per AVA Region (if offered) to scout for upcoming talent. If USEF competitions are not held in a particular region, then the DVPA will attend at least one (1) AVA recognized competition per region (if offered, and if silver and/or gold individual classes are held). The DVPA will also attend the USEF/AVA National Championships yearly, scouting for up-coming talented in the bronze and silver level divisions. Championship Level

The United States sends individual vaulters and team vaulters to the World Championships. The USEF develops and oversees or administers all aspects of selection for the World Championships, as well as the logistics relevant to participa-tion in these competitions. The pipeline described above ensures that the most tal-ented horse/vaulter combinations represent the United States in the World Champion-ships. Guaranteed funding would ensure that these teams have the support necessary to implement our strategic plan. High Performance Training Sessions

Each year, the USEF VHPC will offer a series of three to five training session to the top individual and team vaulters. The purpose of these training sessions is to improve our chances of winning medals at the next two World Championships. The HP training sessions are developed by the Education Subcommittee and administered by the Director of Vaulting. The budget for each camp is $8000. Continued

6Vaulting World August 2005

High Performance Foreign TourTo better prepare our vaulters to win

medals at World Championships, the VHPC will establish a High Performance Foreign Tour. Each year, individual and team vaulters will be invited to attend a series of CVIs abroad. The trip will be arranged by the Director of Vaulting and VHPC Tour subcommittee. The U.S. Na-tional Trainer will serve as both the Chef d’Equipe for the tour and an advisor to the vaulters and their coaches. Vaulter grants will cover partial expenses for the Tour.U.S. National Trainer

A U.S. National Trainer will be se-lected to oversee the progress of the elite athletes. The U.S. National Trainer will work with the elite vaulters during the off-season, advise the education sub-com-mittee on curriculum and travel with the vaulters on the High Performance Foreign Tour. This is a paid position.Steps to Maintain or Improve Our World Position

The implementation of an aggressive High Performance Plan will ensure our ability to maintain or improve our world position. The most important components of the HPP are:

Continued Exposure to European Competition – Preparation for the WEG and World Championships is very difficult without head-to-head competition against the best Europe has to offer. Without it our ability to maintain/improve our world posi-tion is seriously compromised, in particu-lar, participation in prominent European CVIs such as CVI Saumur. The United States needs to attend each CVI with a large delegation, demonstrating our presence as a nation.

Horse Availability – Horses capable of competing at the championship level will always be in short supply. Because of the cost of these horses, USEF must de-pend on vaulters and coaches to identify and develop these horses, as well as the generosity of owners to buy them. USEF must continue to foster good relationships with the Vaulting community and the AVA, so that they understand the important role they have in our country’s continued inter-national success, particularly supplying the horses necessary to compete at this level. In addition, VHPC will explore options

High Performance PlanContinued from previous page for guaranteed U.S. horse availability at

CVIs and World Championships which may include purchasing horses but board-ing them in Europe and training them with reputable trainers.

National Trainer/Chef d’Equipe – In the changing landscape of international vaulting, and as we seek to accomplish our goal of winning more medals, it is not only important that our athletes are well trained, but that they are also viewed as a “force” on the international scene. By rec-ognizing and appointing a Chef d’Equipe and/or National Trainer, we would have unbiased leader(s) to protect, promote and guide our vaulters both prior to and during the international competitions throughout the year.

Vaulting Horse and Longeur Pro-gram – Establish a series of longeing train-ing sessions. Assist potential and current horse owners in the searching for, acquiring of, and the training process of the vaulting horse. Tap into other FEI sports for advice and instruction. Coordinate with newly formed AVA Horse Committee to share information and training dates.

Funding – The ability to fund the pro-grams outlined is crucial to our continued success as a world power.

Sara IkePlease be aware that due to the re-

cent FEI/USEF rule changes, we have made some modifications to the Ranking Lists. Our website: http://www.usef.org/content/equestrianSports/disciplines/highperformance/vaulting.php features four lists: High Performance Women, High Performance Men, Silver Women, Silver Men. Following is an excerpt:

High Performance Lists: The final score (average of Round I and Round II) of any USEF Gold division and FEI recognized competition within the last 2 years will be used for ranking on the High Performance (HP) Ranking Lists. A vaulter must complete Round I and Round II for the score to be eligible. USEF Silver scores earned prior to 1/1/05 will count towards rank-ing on the HP Lists until they age off.

Silver Ranking Lists: The final score (av-erage of Round I and Round II) of any USEF recognized Silver division earned after 1/1/05 will be used for ranking on the Silver Ranking Lists. A vaulter must complete Round I and Round II for the score to be eligible.

Don’t panic if you’ve disappeared from the Lists. Ask yourself if you have 3 scores that fit the criteria for a specific list. Remember a vaulter must have a minimum of 3 scores to be ranked.

2006 National Youth Horse Leaders Symposium

Johnson explains, “The diversity of the national-level speakers will benefit all who attend and strengthen our Florida youth horse program. Additionally, the exchange of ideas from the broad spectrum of horse-oriented youth lead-ers attending the conference will give everyone great ideas to take back and implement.”

The symposium routinely draws a broad representation of youth horse leaders from breed associations, equine sport organizations, universities, and the crucially important hands-on youth leaders from such groups as 4-H, U.S. Pony Club, National High School Ro-deo, Future Farmers of America, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and more.

7Vaulting World August 2005

What’s the best advice for traveling with your horse? How long should the horse be in the trailer at one time? How do you prepare the horse for long distance trips? Are shipping boots a good idea? How much rest do you give the horse when he arrives? What is the most common prob-lem with shipping horses?

Noel Martonovitch

Midge Leitch, VMDI think that, as with people, travel

affects horses in very individual ways. I have traveled with horses of many different sizes and temperaments, from wiry little Morgans, used for Combined Driving, to 1500 pound warmbloods used for dressage. In general, the smaller the horse, the easier it is for it to tolerate the cramped space of a trailer or van or airplane pallet. The more confident, less anxious a horse generally is, the more likely he is to tolerate the strange experiences of travel.

Some people like to break up longer trips with a stop over night. When traveling by road it is optimal for horses to have an opportunity to give their legs a rest from the wearying effort of maintaining their balance. They also need to get their heads down to encourage drainage from their si-nuses, guttural pouches, and chests. How-ever, if the “stopover” barn is a busy one, or there are other horses stopping over, then the horse’s rest may be minimal and there is always the risk of exposure to disease. If the trip is 4 hours or less, I suggest that the horse be shipped non-stop, loose in a box stall, if available, or in a double stall in a well suspended trailer or van with frequent stops for water, hay and the chance to stand still. If on the other hand, the trip is longer than 4 hours, I would recommend that the horses be permitted a minimum of 1 hours off the truck after 24 hours of travel.

While I know that lots of horses ship without mineral oil, in preparation for long trips (24 hours or more) I prefer to give horses about a gallon of mineral oil by stomach tube about an hour before they leave as it is almost impossible to feed enough mineral oil to make much difference.

I like to be sure that the horses are getting electrolytes on long trips by paste or in their feed, never in their water, and that they have constant or very frequent

Ask the Expert - Shipping and Traileringaccess to fresh water. Preferably the water should be brought from home in plastic containers, as tap water at gas stations is often no more palatable to horses than it is to people. Horses which are reluctant to drink can often be encouraged to do so by salting the hay and grain which they are eating. I tend not to feed much grain on trips, as gut motility is always somewhat reduced by lengthy travel. Having a stom-ach full of carbohydrate-rich concentrates, which have the potential to induce several problems, makes no sense to me. I would rather horses eat good quality hay and skip the grain unless they are laying over during the trip. Then a good, sloppy bran mash is a great idea.

I am not much of a believer in ship-ping bandages for long trips. They tend to get soggy with urine and feces and start to slip down. Usually it’s difficult to reset them unless you have a stopover. The Lende boots work well and seem to pro-vide reasonable protection. If your horse is traveling with a commercial shipper, I am inclined to avoid bandages and even shipping boots, unless you know absolutely that the trucker will tend to them.

I like to give horses plenty of time at their destination to recover. Temperatures must be taken soon after arrival and should be rechecked at two and four hours follow-ing arrival to verify that they are staying within normal limits. I prefer that tempera-tures be 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit or less by two hours after arrival. On lengthy trips, temperatures should also be monitored day and night while the horse is on the road.

I restrict exercise on the day follow-ing arrival to hand walking and/or small amounts of quiet turn out. I do not want these horses to break a sweat. If they feel great and their temperatures are staying normal, I might let them do a little work on the second day after arriving. In deter-mining the amount of exercise that should be permitted, the ambient temperature, as well as whether or not there has been a dramatic difference between temperatures at the point of origin and the destination, are both important factors. Horses shipping from cool or cold climates to hot ones seem to be more susceptible to pneumo-nia and other illnesses and should be body clipped before they leave. Then, when they arrive in the hotter climate they will

be better prepared to regulate their body temperatures.

Impaction and shipping fever (influ-enza) are probably the two most common problems that afflict horses shipping great distances. Maintaining an active, current vaccination program, introducing your horse to shipping adventures with short hauls, and being sure that they are healthy and not exhausted from a difficult school-ing session or competition before they start a long trip are all good ways to avoid the disappointment of having a horse arrive in a condition that prohibits him from compet-ing at his very best.

Midge Leitch, VMD, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine and remained at New Bolton Center, completing an intern-ship and residency before attaining a staff position in surgery and achieving board certification in 1982. In 1980 she opened a private practice, adjacent to New Bolton Center, which includes thoroughbred race horses and sport horses from all disci-plines. Many of her publications and much of her work with horses has involved issues of lameness and problems affecting per-formance in sport horses. Midge has ac-companied USET teams on many European tours including World Equestrian Games and the Olympics. She also serves on the executive board of the American Associa-tion of Equine Practitioners.

Lisa ZielenskeI was at vaulting practice one day and

Mrs. Faulkner asked me if I would like to go with the Friendship Team to Equine Af-faire in Franklin, Ohio as their groomer. I was excited about the opportunity to work with the Friendship Team.

On the day we were leaving, I had to be at the barn very early. I planned to ride in the truck with Mrs. Faulkner and Ms. Glenna (Shannon Wright’s mom who was going to help with food for the vaulters). Gumby and Paddington were loaded but as we started to pull out the brakes locked up on the horse trailer. Instead of being able to leave at 6:30 in the morning for our 10-12 hour drive, we left at 10:30 am after we had our brakes fixed. I ended up driving with the other vaulters from our team and we followed the trailer to Ohio.

Friendship Team at the Equine AffaireCounty Fairgrounds, the vaulters practiced and we walked the horses a good bit. We let them eat a lot of grass as we didn’t know if there would be that much grass at the Ohio Expo Center.

The first day was probably the easiest day. We gave the horses a bath and got the tack and miscellaneous items we needed out of the trailer. We would be moving the horses to the Ohio Expo Center the next day where they would perform. When all the vaulters were finally there from their various flights, they practiced a short time that night. After the practice, they went to the hotel to get a good night sleep for the next day. The horses were easy to take care of as their food was already measured out. While the vaulters practiced, we had plenty of time to clean stalls and get fresh water for the horses.

Day two was about the same. We got the horses out for anyone who hadn’t been on them and sto practice sections of the freestyle. Nicole got to feel how she needed to lounge and everything seemed to go well. We had a local 4-H Club come and watch. The vaulters gave a two hour clinic on the basics of vaulting for the 14 club members and leaders. When the vaulters were finished with the horses, we packed up all of the tack. The 4-H Club provided Blimpie sandwiches, drinks and dessert for everyone.

On day three we all met at the barn and everyone practiced a little. Around lunch, we loaded up and moved where we could permanently unpack. That was good news for me because I like to know where everything is. As packed as the trailer was, it was hard to find one thing quickly when you have to go digging in the trailer for it. At this point, I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t realize there would be so many horses in such a big facility. Even by the last day I still got turned around in the barns. After we all unpacked and got everything settled, the vaulters practiced. It was so nice to have all of their help.

We had several breaks during the day to go and shop. I enjoyed helping Jan in the booth on some of my breaks. A lot of people stopped by with all kinds of questions! The horses loved the attention. Gumby was the only one the vaulters used but we kept both horses together. The performance was an Elvis theme. Elvis with his guitar did a great job getting the audiences attention and the girls with their poodle skirts got the audience clapping.

I was able to watch two of the three performances and it was really neat to see how the Friendship Team, coached by Lucinda Faulkner, pulled together and did a great job. I love the horses and I thor-oughly enjoyed my job as groomer. It was an amazing opportunity.

It was about 8:00 pm, two hours away from Franklin when we got a call from Mrs. Faulkner that the trailer had a tire blow out. We finally got the horses settled in the barn and everyone in the hotel about 2 am. That was a long day!

My roommate was Nicole d’Auriol, one of our loungers who also helped with the horses. She was very nice and I enjoyed staying with her. Every morning there was a schedule on our door for the day ahead. The first two days our horses were only about five minutes away from the hotel. That was convenient because we needed all the sleep we could get. At the Franklin

The rest of the time was basically the same. I was used to the routine the last day. Nicole and I got to the barn about 8am and the vaulters were about an hour behind us. We fed, watered and cleaned stalls. When the vaulters came we took the big boys (Gumby and Paddington) on about an hour walk. They had about three walks every day. The horses got many compliments and were wonderful. We didn’t have any problems. Paddington did the short little educational sessions with the vaulters dur-ing the day. The stands were filled and it was great to see how much interest there was in vaulting!

9Vaulting World August 2005

Rosie Brown (See article in June 2005 issue of Vaulting World on page 20)

In March of 005 I met Mandy Morrison at the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) Region 9 Conference in Fort Worth. She attended my vaulting workshop and was super excited to hear that I was in Austin. She is owner of the Out Back Stables in Georgetown (just north of Austin) and started a vaulting program at her facility in 2004. The Out Back Vaulters first registered with the AVA in 2005, and are steadily growing. With coach/vaulter Amy Mattson, Mandy and myself working with their group and wonderful Appaloosa gelding Blizz, we have a fun-filled year of vaulting demonstrations ahead of us.

Our first demo was at the Bluebonnet Arena in Burnet, Texas on June 25, 2005. You would not expect such a nice facility with soft sand footing in the middle of nowhere an hour north of Austin. Some of us arrived early at the facility to scope it out. There was not much commotion and the show had not yet begun. The sun was shining but there was a nice breeze which kept it cool all morning.

Vaulting in the Out Back…of TexasThe schedule for the day featured

trail riding outside at 9 am and then cow sorting inside at 10:30 am. We were able to sneak in to do our demonstration as the audience transitioned from outside to the inside classes. We had a completely captive audience. I honestly don’t think they knew what to make of us – running around in spandex with our hair pulled up so tight and so full of gel that is looked plastic. But they sure were drawn in. They even tipped their cowboy hats back at us when we entered and bowed. I would say we had an approximately 80 people in the audience and most of them were mounted as they waited for the working cow classes to begin.

The vaulters did a great job! We start-ed with our team freestyle on the barrel and then moved to the horse to show off both individual compulsory and freestyle moves at all three gaits. We treated this just as if it were a competition: hair neat, shoes clean, uniforms spick and span, formal longeur and horse attire.

We hope to enter a real competition in 2006. You can visit the Out Back

Vaulters at www.outback-stables.net or www.rozeroz.com for more information on the vaulting scene in Texas. If you go to the Outback Vaulters page you can view stills and a video of our first vaulting demo back in June. Just click on the link that says Out Back Vaulters Video and it should open right up in Windows Media Player. (Turn up your volume to hear our music.) If you are in the Austin area and are interested in joining the Outback Vaulters, please email me at [email protected].

Jael Ballard (14-year-old bronze level vaulter with Balance Vaulting Club)

Vaulting – the equestrian art of gym-nastics and dance on horseback. One’s first reaction is, “Come again”? Indeed, when asked to relate this unique sport to life, one wonders how in the world to relate it to anything at all. It is not until it is really explored that one begins to understand. Vaulting does not have to relate to any-thing physical. The mental state is deeply involved as well and many characteristics of the mind learned in vaulting become very useful in life.

One thing I have learned in my mere three-and-a-half years of vaulting is that being normal doesn’t mean fun. Though it sounds funny (and it kind of is), when one is bound by the generic mold that is pub-lic schooling, this sport makes it so much easier to break out. First of all it makes one unique because vaulting itself is unique and, at the moment, I know three people in my school that do vaulting – three. My fel-low vaulters are what we’ll call different. I wouldn’t be nearly as interesting a person

Vaulting and Life if not for them. Vaulting sets one out and helps to stop one’s persona from sliding into the black hole that is generic-ism.

Another thing I have learned in this sport is creativity. Being able to think out-side the box is an extremely valuable trait. Having to develop individual routines that make that one minute interesting for judges and spectators involves a heroic effort to-wards creativity. In life one must be able to think and imagine, to make possible one’s ideas. In vaulting, it’s the same.

Last but not least, I have learned how to be confident. If one thing were to be learned in this sport that is confidence. Being able to hold one’s head up high, no matter what, is essential in life as well as in vaulting. Without confidence and deter-mination one might as well not even try. I thank vaulting for the confidence I have earned.

In conclusion, I am so grateful for my individuality, my creativity, and my con-fidence. If there is one thing in this world I can attribute that to, it’s vaulting. I have been through three years of vaulting and thirteen years of life. Both have been dif-

ficult at times, and sometimes it seems as if giving up is the only way out of either. However, with these three things one can make vaulting, as well as life, much more enjoyable.

Suzanne DetolThe DevonWood Zone Fest and Re-

gional Medal Test was held on May 21, 2005. This competition was held primarily for the purpose of qualifying the vaulters in Zone 1 (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, N. Dakota, S. Dakota, Nebraska, Hawaii and Alaska) for the new Zone Awards that will be awarded at the USEF/AVA National Championships this year. Vaulters must participate in a min-imum of three AVA Recognized Compe-titions in their Zone, in order to be eligible. This was Zone 1’s third competition.

Forty-two competitors participated in the one-day competition, and 4 medal tests were given! Our judge was Craig B. Coburn, AVA R, from West Holly-wood, California. Craig did a wonderful job keeping the tight schedule on time. Thank you!

A special thank you for continued support of our sport also goes to the DevonWood Equestrian Centre. Thank you to DevonWood Vaulting Club parents for working the competition and Al Detol and Michael Zagyva – our food booth experts. We could not host a competition without the hours of volunteer help. Finally, thank you to all clubs, vaulters, coaches, lon-geurs, etc. who attended this competition and helped to make it fun.

A vest constructed from a patented three-layer fabric that combines hydro-philic fibers into a fibrous batting core with a thermally conductive membrane lining will provide cooling after allow-ing the product to soak in water for 2 to 3 minutes. The water activates the cool-ing process by charging the fibers with moisture and creating an environment for evaporation. When moisture in the batting evaporates, heat is removed and cools the surrounding area, transferring the cooling effect to the wearer. Depending upon the environment this cooling could last up to 8 hours, and can be recharged again by simply immersing the product in water to restart the cooling process.

Other products of interest are the neck cooler and a boot which helps with sprains of the foot and ankle.

Agape Summer FestNoel Martonovich

Region IV Championships, held on June 25th and 26th, 2005 at the Ber-nalillo Sheriff’s Posse Grounds, in Albuquerque New Mexico was a success! Our guest of honor was Suzanne Detol who, as always, did an excellent job judging and keeping us on track. Tom and Marge Oakes manned the office, with the help of their six-month-old grandson Aiden. Aiden’s mom, Susan Caskey was on the tractor during the rake breaks. Lazy River Vaulter’s Tricia Goroum was at the scoring computer and our own rock star, Paul Caskey, was the announcer/music man. Golden Gate Vaulter’s Mike Czyzewski and Dan McCarn were our gate keepers. Cher Czyzewski and Anna Schulte were the clerks. We had clubs from Colorado, New Mexico, Taxes, Kansas, Virginia, Mexico and Canada. Photographer and former vaulter Sean Stevenson was there taking beautiful pictures of all the vaulters, which are available for or-der. Sean will also be at Nationals to capture those amazing moves. Be sure to look for him!

At the beginning of each day we had a Medal Test. Congratulations to all our new Bronze and Trot medalists. We started the competition with a “green horse” class to give new vaulting horses a chance to check out the competition circle. There were six new horses in this class. It looks good for the future of vaulting in our region! We also thank all the reliable horses that have been here year after year; Doc and Rocky of Golden Gate Vaulters, Max of Albuquerque Vaulters, Jezebel of Free Spirit Vaulters and Jaco, the beautiful little canting pony of Lazy River Vaulters.

Region IV Championships

Representing Colorado was Yossi, Noel and Matthew Martonovich’s Golden Gate Vaulters. From here they went on to CVI Saratoga July 1 -3. Big cheer for Nicole Czyzewski and Colin Schmidt from Canada (who, along with the other vaulters from Canada, were generously given horse time on Doc) in their efforts to qualify for the World Championships!! Also from Colorado was Mile High Vaulters coached by Jodi Rinard with baby Zoë, four months old, and husband Eric in tow. Now Peaches’ daughter Amidala carries this team. Amidala also carried the Welsh Rabbit Vaulters coached by Meg Fletcher and Chris Pratt who made the long trip from Fort Worth, Texas.

The Albuquerque Vaulters from New Mexico coached by Merry Cole and Greta Shryock have attended since the very first Region IV Championships in 1982! Lazy River Vaulters coached by Lee Thomas and Greta Shryock also came from New Mexico. Greta was very busy as coach, longer and Gold level competitor. The Smith Family; Evelyn, Wesley and Liam from the Virginia Vaulters, competed on Lazy River’s pony Jaco. Free Spirit Vaulters coached by Marcy Grace had a guest vaulter, Kaitlyn Olson from Oaxaca, Mexico.

We were happy to have, for the first time, therapeutic riders from a school for the handicapped in Garden City Kansas, Miles of Smiles Vaulters coached

Veronica and Angela Turner demonstrate their Open Pairs routine on Doc.

Region IV Championshipsby Joyce Adams with there with their good, patient horse, Sally. These vaulters regis-tered with the AVA this year so that they could compete at our Regionals and then Nationals! Wow, team spirit! The look of joy on the faces of these vaulters when they complete their compulsories or freestyle is a beautiful sight. On Saturday night Golden Gate Vaulters wowed us with their team freestyle and the tiny tots touched our hearts us with their pony vaulting.

It was great to see all the members of our Region IV vaulting family again and to welcome new vaulting enthusiasts. We are proud of our amazing vaulters and our wonderful volunteers who are the best in the business! The Posse Grounds were left spotless, so congratulations to all of you for all your hard work that made this championship a success!

Susan ParodiWth the help of an AVA grant new club Paradise Vaulters was given the chance

to work under super Gold medalist Kenny and we jumped on it. Even though we only had a couple days to schedule and make it happen on July 3rd, we did benefit immensely. Kenny was fun and positive, using physical science to relate balance and make the vaulters exercise their brains as well as their muscles. The members worked hard but had fun learning experiences with patience and confidence. Their favorite was to “move like moving through Jello”. The improvements are already greatly seen in the few that got the chance to participate.

Kenny also helped with the starting of our future mount “Holly”. By letting her feel comfortable with the new balancing placements varied from her normal dressage work. We enjoyed seeing the control and power that it takes to do this correctly and appreciated it greatly.

Our many thanks to clinician Kenny Geisler, the AVA, Jan Weber and all the others of Region IX that continue to make days like this possible for us here at Paradise Vautlers in Virginia. Now to go do a super job at our regional championships!

Update: We did!!! Two overall championships and one reserve champ with plenty of other ribbons and a very successful competition for all. Thanks to everyone.
