MISSISSIPPI Revised data for assets and liabilities and number of all banks in Mississippi, as of June 30 or the nearest available date, in the period 1896-1955 are shown in Table 1; for national banks, in Table 2; and for State commercial banks, in Table 3. 1 A separate balance sheet was not compiled for unincorporated banks in this State because adequate data were re- ported, either separately or in combination with data for other State commercial banks, in the reports of the Comptroller of the Cur- rency or the State banking department. A general description of the compilation of all-bank figures for the United States as a whole is given in Part I of this volume, the United States Summary. This summary in- cludes the definition of "bank" as used in this study and a description of the balance-sheet items, the classification of banks, and the principal methods and procedures used in compiling the figures. The figures for national banks in Missis- sippi were obtained from the abstracts and annual reports of the Comptroller of the Cur- rency with relatively minor adjustments. A description of these figures is included in the 1 Since there have been no mutual savings hanks in Mis- sissippi, the figures for all commercial hanks are identical with those for all banks. For the same reason, the term "State commercial banks" used in Table 3 is synonymous with "all banks other than national*'; it refers to banks that at one time or another dur- ing the period were designated in the annual reports of the Comptroller of the Currency as "State banks," "loan and trust companies/' "stock savings banks/' or "private banks and bankers" (unincorporated banks). United States Summary. Compilation of fig- ures for State commercial banks presented a number of problems and considerations not encountered in compiling the balance sheet for national banks. The following sections describe these problems and the methods used in deriving the revised series. The primary sources of statistics for State commercial banks for the period 1896-1933 were (1) figures reported to the Comptroller of the Currency and published in his annual reports and (2) figures published in the reports and abstracts of the State banking department and by other State authorities. These sources were supplemented by data obtained from bankers' directories. The sources of such statistics for the period 1934-1946 were (1) summary figures for insured banks published or supplied by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and (2) figures for noninsured banks published in reports of the State banking department or in bankers' directories. Data for this period are discussed separately because of the sub- stantially better coverage and more consistent reporting beginning in 1934. Revised data for assets and liabilities andnumber of all banks in Mississippi, as of June30 or the nearest available date, in the period1896-1955 are shown in Table 1; for nationalbanks, in Table 2; and for State commercialbanks, in Table 3.1 A separate balance sheetwas not compiled for unincorporated banksin this State because adequate data were re-ported, either separately or in combinationwith data for other State commercial banks,in the reports of the Comptroller of the Cur-rency or the State banking department.

A general description of the compilationof all-bank figures for the United States as awhole is given in Part I of this volume, theUnited States Summary. This summary in-cludes the definition of "bank" as used in thisstudy and a description of the balance-sheetitems, the classification of banks, and theprincipal methods and procedures used incompiling the figures.

The figures for national banks in Missis-sippi were obtained from the abstracts andannual reports of the Comptroller of the Cur-rency with relatively minor adjustments. Adescription of these figures is included in the

1 Since there have been no mutual savings hanks in Mis-sissippi, the figures for all commercial hanks are identicalwith those for all banks.

For the same reason, the term "State commercial banks"used in Table 3 is synonymous with "all banks other thannational*'; it refers to banks that at one time or another dur-ing the period were designated in the annual reports of theComptroller of the Currency as "State banks," "loan andtrust companies/' "stock savings banks/' or "private banksand bankers" (unincorporated banks).

United States Summary. Compilation of fig-ures for State commercial banks presented anumber of problems and considerations notencountered in compiling the balance sheetfor national banks. The following sectionsdescribe these problems and the methods usedin deriving the revised series.

The primary sources of statistics for Statecommercial banks for the period 1896-1933were (1) figures reported to the Comptrollerof the Currency and published in his annualreports and (2) figures published in the reportsand abstracts of the State banking departmentand by other State authorities. These sourceswere supplemented by data obtained frombankers' directories.

The sources of such statistics for theperiod 1934-1946 were (1) summary figuresfor insured banks published or supplied by theFederal Deposit Insurance Corporation and(2) figures for noninsured banks published inreports of the State banking department orin bankers' directories. Data for this periodare discussed separately because of the sub-stantially better coverage and more consistentreporting beginning in 1934.

Beginning with 1947, all statistics—in-cluding the breakdowns of loans, investments, cash assets, and deposits—for State commer-cial banks were taken directly from data pub-lished or supplied by the Federal DepositInsurance Corporation.

STATE COMMERCIAL BANKS, 1896-1933

The following paragraphs describe (1) theprincipal adjustments in the figures as pub-lished by the Comptroller of the Currency,(2) supplementation of the data from othersources, and (3) preparation of estimateswhere data were incomplete or were not avail-able.2 The United States Summary includesa discussion and evaluation of alternativeestimating procedures considered, tested, andused in one or more States. It also includesexamples of the use of banking trends as aguide in making State estimates.

NUMBER OF BANKS AND AGGREGATEBALANCE SHEET

The accompanying table shows adjust-ments made in figures published by theComptroller for number of banks and balancesheets. These changes, which for the mostpart are to exclude branches, are based oninformation obtained from State bankingdepartment reports.

* In cases where the breakdown of a given item (for ex-ample, total loans) was not estimated on the basis of a per-centage distribution, but where one or more components wereestimated on the basis of data from various sources or forvarious dates, the "other" category (for example, other loans)is a residual.

LOANS

A complete classification of loans intoreal estate, collateral, and "all other" wasreported to the Comptroller only for 1909 and1912-1915. The breakdowns for other yearswere estimated.

Real estate loans for 1896-1908 and 1916-1933 were estimated by applying to totalloans, ratios that reflected changes over theperiod in the ratio of this item to total loansat Louisiana State commercial banks; theseratios were derived by interpolating tech-nique No. 2, described in the United StatesSummary.

Collateral loans for 1896-1908 were esti-mated by applying to total loans in each yearthe ratio of these loans to total loans as com-puted from reported data for 1909; for 1916-1933, by applying to total loans ratios ofthese loans to total loans derived by inter-polating between similar ratios computed fromreported data for 1915 and 1934.

Estimates of both real estate and collat-eral loans for 1910 and 1911 were made byapplying to total loans the average ratio ofeach item to the total as computed fromreported data for 1909 and 1912.

INVESTMENTS

A complete classification of investmentsinto United States Government, State andpolitical subdivision, and other securities wasnot reported to the Comptroller regularly until1934. Except for a few years, however, hold-ings of United States Government securitieswere reported. In the years when the datawere not reported, figures were obtained fromother sources or were estimated.

Figures for United States Governmentsecurities for 1897-1900 were taken from re-ports of the State Auditor. In view of thefact that holdings of these securities as re-ported by the Comptroller were the same

small magnitude in 1909 as in 1901, holdingswere estimated at this amount for each of theyears 1902-1908. Holdings for 1911, alsosmall, were estimated by applying to totalinvestments the average ratio of United StatesGovernment securities to total investmentscomputed from reported data for 1910 and1912. The estimates for 1917 and 1918 werederived by applying to total investments, ra-tios that reflected changes during these yearsin the ratio of United States Governmentsecurities to total investments at Mississippinational banks; these ratios were derived byinterpolating technique No. 2, described inthe United States Summary.

Holdings of obligations of States andpolitical subdivisions for 1899-1908 were esti-mated by applying to total investments, ratiosof these securities to total investments thatwere derived by interpolating between similarratios based on reported data for 1898 and1909; for 1910 and 1911, by applying theaverage of ratios computed for 1909 and 1912.

For 1916-1926, State and political subdi-vision securities were estimated by applyingto total investments other than United StatesGovernment securities, ratios that reflectedchanges over the period in the ratio of thesesecurities to this total at Mississippi nationalbanks; these ratios were derived by interpo-lating technique No. 2, described in the UnitedStates Summary. For 1928-1933 the estimateswere derived by applying to total investmentsless United States Government securities, ra-tios of these securities to this total that werederived by interpolating between similar ratiosbased on reported data for 1927 and 1934.

DEPOSITS

The breakdown of deposits into interbank,United States Government, other demand, andother time was adequate, after some minoradjustments, in the reports of the Comptroller

beginning 1909, although reported figures forUnited States Government deposits were sup-plemented in a few years.3 No attempt wasmade in the revised series to provide figuresfor the latter item prior to 1918 because prac-tically all such deposits were held by nationalbanks.

In years when items were not reported, figures were obtained from other sources orwere estimated.

Figures for time deposits for the period1896-1908 are a combination of time cer-tificates of deposits, figures for which wereobtained from the State Auditor's reports, andsavings deposits, which were estimated on thebasis of the percentage relationship betweentime certificates of deposits and savingsdeposits in 1909.

Demand deposits were derived by sub-tracting estimated time deposits and reportedinterbank deposits from total deposits.

Figures for United States Governmentdeposits for 1918-1920 represent such depositsat State member banks only, which held prac-tically all of this type of deposit at Statecommercial banks. Figures except for 1918are as reported. The figure for 1918 was esti-mated by applying to United States Govern-ment deposits at all State member banks inthe United States on June 30 of that year, theratio of these deposits at State member banksin Mississippi to such deposits at all Statemember banks on June 30, 1919.

OTHER ITEMS

Small amounts of cash items in processof collection were estimated for 1896-1908 byapplying to total cash assets the ratio of thisitem to total cash assets computed from re-ported data for 1909. Borrowings for 1896-1908 were obtained from reports of the Statebanking department.

* In subsequent paragraphs these items (if discussed) aredesignated and arranged as follows: demand, time, interbank, and United States Government. This order differs from thatin the tables.

STATE COMMERCIALThe principal assets and liabilities of

State commercial banks for 1934-1946 wereobtained by combining data for insured bankspublished by the Federal Deposit InsuranceCorporation with data for individual nonin-sured banks. Figures for the latter group for1934 were taken from reports of the Statebanking department for that year and frombankers' directories for 1935-1941; for 1942-1946, they were compiled by the FederalDeposit Insurance Corporation from datafurnished by individual banks or by the Statebanking department.

The breakdowns of some of the principalasset and liability items that were requiredfor the all-bank series were not available fornoninsured banks for every year during the1934-1946 period in the sources cited. The

BANKS, 1934-1946breakdowns of loans and of securities otherthan United States Government obligationsfor 1934-1946 were made by applying to totalsin each year the percentage distribution ofthese items at insured nonmember commercialbanks in corresponding years.

The breakdowns of cash assets for indi-vidual noninsured banks for 1935-1941 and1943-1946 were estimated by applying tototal cash assets, ratios of the subitems tothe total that were derived by interpolatingbetween • ratios based on data for 1934 and1942 and for 1942 and 1947, respectively. The breakdowns of deposits for 1935-1941 wereestimated by applying to total deposits, ratiosof each subitem to the total that were derivedby interpolating between ratios based onreported data for 1934 and 1942.
