The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them.

The Gathering of the Community

Prelude Puer natus in Bethlehem, BuxWV 217 Buxtehude Welcome please stand Hymn 158 Earth has many a noble city

Earth has many a noble city; Bethlehem, thou dost all excel: out of thee the Lord from heaven came to rule his Israel. Fairer than the sun at morning was the star that told his birth, to the world its God announcing seen in fleshly form on earth. Eastern sages at his cradle make oblations rich and rare; see them give, in deep devotion, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Sacred gifts of mystic meaning: incense doth their God disclose, gold the King of kings proclaimeth, myrrh his sepulchre foreshows. Jesus, whom the Gentiles worshiped at thy glad epiphany, unto thee, with God the Father and the Spirit, glory be.

The Proclamation of the Word

The Readings

Romans 12:9-18 read by Kitty Graham Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Paul wrote, “9 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.“

Reader This is the Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendour. 3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. Refrain

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. Refrain 7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!” 10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. 11 May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace! Refrain

Holy Gospel read by Karen Isaacs, Theological Intern Gospeller The Lord be with you. Mark 10:35-45 People And also with you. Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reader 35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39 They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; but

Presider Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebration of the Eucharist

During the following hymn, we are joined in worship by our youth and children. Our children bring up the bread and wine to set the table for Communion, our family meal. At the Lord’s Table, Christ is the host and we are the guests. We also take up a financial offering to nurture God’s kingdom among our people and beyond our walls. A growing number of us contribute via Pre-Authorized Giving. Giving joyfully and freely to God’s work is one practical way that we are being transformed into a people of hope & confidence, humility & gratitude, wonder & curiosity, generosity & purpose. If you are visiting with us this morning, please feel no compulsion to give.

Kids

From east to west, from shore to shore, let every heart awake and sing the holy child whom Mary bore, the Christ, the everlasting King. Behold! The world's creator wears the form and fashion of a slave; our very flesh our Maker shares, his fallen creature, now to save. For this how wondrously he wrought! A maiden, in her lowly place, became, in ways beyond all thought, the chosen vessel of his grace. Assenting to the angel's word, she chose what God the Spirit willed, and suddenly the promised Lord that pure and hallowed temple filled. He shrank not from the oxen's stall, he lay within the manger bed, and he, whose bounty feeds us all, at Mary's breast himself was fed. And while the angels in the sky sang praise above the silent field, to shepherds poor the Lord most high, the one great Shepherd, was revealed. All glory for this blessed morn to God, the source of all is due; all praise, to you, O Virgin-born, all praise, O Holy Ghost, to you.

Prayer over the Gifts Presider God of life and freedom, People we celebrate the revelation of Jesus as the Christ who makes all creation new.

Accept all we offer you this day and make us new in him, who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

Presider Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus

Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted and in his holy gospel commands us to continue a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood.

On the night that Jesus was betrayed he took bread and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body

and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, world without end.

All Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Presider As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will

be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Communion All baptized persons are welcome at Christ’s table.

If you do not wish to receive the wine, you may touch the base of the cup. If you wish to receive a blessing, please come forward and cross your arms.

Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. The Deacon will bring Holy Communion to those unable to come forward to the Lord’s table.

And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary's tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we spread forth to thee that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one, true, pure, immortal sacrifice.

11

Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim. For lo! Between our sins and their reward we set the passion of thy Son our Lord. And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast; O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill. In thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

12

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders; ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished; his dying breath has brought me life— I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom; but I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection. Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer; but this I know with all my heart— his wounds have paid my ransom.

Prayer after Communion please stand Presider Almighty and everliving God, All we thank you with all our hearts for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most

precious body and blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. We acknowledge your love and care for us in making us members of his mystical body, the blessed company of all faithful people, and heirs of eternal life. Amen.

Presider Glory to God, All whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.

Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Blessing Presider The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the

knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.

Come, almighty to deliver; let us all thy grace receive; suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee, changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.
