1. NIGHT-TIME BACKGROUND NOISE MEASUREMENTS

1.1 Introduction

1.1.1 This report documents the night-time background noise measurements taken in thevicinity of the proposed route for the Richborough Connection overhead line forinclusion in the operational noise assessment.

1.1.2 To establish the prevailing background noise conditions along the proposed route,a series of five minute attended measurements were taken at the convenient publicaccess points [road crossings] representative of residential receptors along theproposed route during the early hours on several different occasions as detailedbelow.

The route was surveyed in the early hours of the following dates, all of whichwere normal working week days :

16th July 2013;

23rd September 2014;

18th February 2015; and

8th April 2015.

1.1.3 Monitoring locations were identified as part of a desktop study and were labelled Ato P. Location F was found to be unsuitable for carrying out noise monitoring whenit was visited in person. Consequently no measurements were taken at location Fand it is not identified on any of the figures. The monitoring locations are shown inFigure 11.1, Volume 5, Document 5.3.11.

1.1.4 On all of the above occasions the weather was suitable for noise monitoring. It wasfine, calm and dry allowing the representative minimum background noise levels tobe measured without the influence of wind and precipitation. Throughout themeasurement surveys the weather remained fine and there were no obviouspeculiar or atypical noise sources to contend with. For the great majority of themeasurements, the measurement intervals were not disturbed by passing localtraffic or other human activity. When there was passing local traffic, it wasconsidered to be typical for that location. Surveyor comments were noted at eachlocation and recorded in National Grid files.

1.1.5 This report is not a noise assessment; it is simply a record of prevailing backgroundnoise measurements. These measurements have been used to guide the audiblenoise impact assessment included in the Environmental Statement, Volume 5,Document 5.2, Chapter 11: Noise and Vibration. Based on the range ofbackground noise levels measured at each monitoring location, professionaljudgement has been used to determine the representative background noise levelat each receptor location, which has then fed into the noise assessment included inthe Environmental Statement, Volume 5, Document 5.2, Chapter 11: Noise andVibration.



1.2 Equipment and Calibration

1.2.1 Measurements were taken with a variety of instruments, all of which werecalibrated in accordance with the relevant standards:

Bruel & Kjaer 2270 Investigator, Serial No. 2664167

Bruel & Kjaer 4189 microphone, Serial No. 2662754





1.2.2 Sound level equipment was also successfully field calibrated immediately beforeand after each noise survey in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.Meteorological parameters were recorded for indication.
