We were first introduced to the talents of UK based artist – Michael Moonchild – through a friend of his, Stormy Couture.

Michael is a young man who went to WAC Performing Arts School in London and has been trying ever since to break into the industry.

His first single ELECTRICK EYES, which you can hear and see on You Tube, was sent to the Editor for a listen. We therefore contacted Michael, to interview him and show you that there is some talent in the UK and not just elsewhere.

What we know of Michael is that he originally gave us an interview which we were prepared to share with you, and in the months since our introduction to him, he has been working hard performing at some gigs all over the country –trying to promote himself and his talent.He asked to change his interview, as things were beginning to go well for him and some aspects of his interview inclusions had changed and were no longer applicable.Since doing the interview with us, Michael Moonchild has found a Manager and has also signed up to an independent promotion label and is no longer giving interviews at the moment.

He has since had a new single Love to Love and the pending one which is Come Closer.Camden based singer/performer is currently spending a great deal of time in the studio recording an album, which he anticipates sharing with the UK and the world soon.We wish this lovely young ambition man all the best of success.

Nos introdujo por primera vez a los talentos de artistas del Reino Unido -Michael Moonchild - a través de un amigo suyo Couture, Stormy.

Michael es un joven que fue a WAC Escénicas Escuela de Artes en Londres y ha estado tratando desde entonces para entrar en la industria.

When you create a piece of artwork you hold the copyright. The law states that the minute you have created you artwork, or lay pen to paper, that it belongs to you, but even then only three changes need to be made to your design for it to be sufficiently different to not be classed as copyright infringement. However, if you actually design a product for the market that can be copied, such a corkscrew, you may need to apply for a patent to protect your work. You can even add your own trademark to your work to protect it, should you wish.

For normal pieces of art, unless you are famous, no one really tends to copy it. For painters that copy the work of old masters it is normally ok because the copyright of a work only usually lasts for seventy years after the death of the artist – unless it belongs to a museum and they have copyrighted the image for use on their promotional material, but normally you can see artists sitting in museums trying their hand at imitating the old works of art.

The Easy WayThe easiest way to copyright your work yourself, with little or no cost, is to

photograph and catalogue it. Each photograph will be date stamped on your computer enabling you to easily prove that you created the work first. Make sure that when you create the catalogue disk that you put a written file on it with the titles and dates of the works, this document too will be date stamped.

InternetThere are also some internet sites that offer copyright protection on your work. How they operate is to accept photographic files of your work, they time and date stamp them and give you a certificate proving copyright belongs to you. You choose a length that you want the work protected for, normally ten years, and then pay a set amount. Should your work then be copied you can take legal action because you will have proof that you created the work first as the copyright company will give you all the documents you need to prove when you lodged the work with them along with a copy of the copyrighted work. It's not as official as copyrighting your work through the proper channels, but it is a lot cheaper considering that copyright infringement is a grey area and difficult to prove.

Remember

You own the copyright the minute the work is created and unless you're famous your work is highly unlikely to be copied. Save yourself a lot of money and don't bother paying for copyright services, as long as you photograph and catalogue your work (something you should do for stock and insurance purposes anyway) you are fairly safe form suffering copyright infringement.Enjoy your work and think of it more as a compliment if someone thinks your work worth copying, rather than a huge problem that needs legal action. Of course there are times, such as if that person then goes on to sell copies of your work, that you will need to follow it

through with the help of a solicitor, but even then a letter is normally enough to persuade the person to stop.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PHOTOGRAPHER?I've been into photography since I was a kid. My father had a darkroom at our place and used to take pictures as well so he thought me to develop negatives and prints. It was back then when nobody even dreamed of digital photography. So Ivealways had photography on the side of my life. However I have a master in in business management and sent 7 years working as a project manager / management consultant for consulting firms and banks; then I decided that its not really environment I’d like to spend all my life in and needed a change. So around 4 years ago I shifted to photography and has been working as a photographer full time since then

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO COME TO ENGLAND TO PLY YOUR TRADE?Ive always wanted to move around the world. After quitting my job I spent around 1 year in South America (mainly Brazil), then lived for 1 year in Dublin, then decided to come to London as it seemed to be a good place to work as a photographer. London is a very vibrant city, Ive always loved its diversity. Its like a pill of the world. You can find anything here.

WHY PHOTOGRAPH FASHION?Fashion is actually one of a few things I do. I've always liked fashion as a way to

express & describe yourself. In many ways you can find lots of art in that area as well. And in London everything is influenced by different communities so you have contemporary designs mixing with (for example) Asian or African influences. Its very inspiring. Apart from fashion I work on commercial photography, have lots of studio work (makeovers, headshots, portfolios), photograph events (parties, concerts, catwalks) and many others. I don’t like to stick to one particular area of photography as it’d be a bit boring for me. I know that people here tend to specialize but I think that if you are a good photographer you should be able to shoot anything.

HAS YOUR WORK EVER BEEN FEATURED IN FASHION MAGAZINES? WHICH?I photographed many catwalks so these were featured in many newspapers & magazines (Australian Times, Conquer, Dilemmas (Poland), What a Fashion (Estonia), In Factio(USA)). As for fashion shoots Ive done a couple of sessions for Diva Scribe (UK, USA), Uziri (Nigeria). Editorials are something I wanna explore further as I haven’t had too much time for it as for now.

I SEE THAT YOU ATTEND SOME FASHION EVENTS? DO YOU SELECT

THEM YOURSELF OR DO YOU GET INVITED TO MOST?It depends. If this is something big, like London Fashion Week, I apply myself on behalf of the magazines I work for. I get pretty lots of invites as well, I look up some of them myself. Depends on the situations.

I SEE FROM SOME OF YOUR WORK THAT YOU HAVE BEEN TO AFRICA FOR SOME SHOOTS-WHICH PART AND WHY?I used to work with a guy who was Nigerian. He is a photographer so we wanted to go to Lagos to explore the market over there. It seems that Nigeria is going to be a good market for it in the coming years. We did a few fashion shoots there (which were published in the Nigerian Uzuri magazine) and did a documentary about the slum of Makoko(some of you may know it from the BBC documentary about Lagos). We’d like to help the local community over there soon by raising some money and supporting the local school. Apart from that I travelled in Kenya, but doing mainly wild-life in all the national parks.

HOW DID YOU FIND THE CHANGE AND CULTURAL DIFFERENCES?I don’t think that the cultural differences are the issue here. You can meet Nigerian people in London and its going to be the same. Its more about the fact that Lagos (as an example) is not too safe place and the economic conditions over there are tough. So you need to watch yourself and your security. I remember as we went to do the fashion shoot in a small village close to Ikorodu. Obviously we knew some people over there but still we needed to pay them

some money. As we were working over there probably a few dozen people were watching every our move and they kept coming and coming, asking for more money, and more etc. It was unbearable so we needed to leave after like 1.5h

DID YOU TRY ANY OF THE LOCAL DISHES? AND WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE?I ate all kinds of African food and enjoyed it. My favourite however is the grilled beef which is sold at every corner of Lagos (Suja) Yummy!

DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH DESIGNERS OR DO YOU ONLY DO PAID WORK?I collaborate with designers but as Im living from photography (as opposed to many ‘Sunday photographers’) I need to balance it a bit. Usually they pay for the shoot (the look book etc) but if its something really creative and outstanding and can be submitted to a magazine then I do it also for free. Then its more like a project we undertake together in order to get something outstanding which could be published.

YOU MET THE EDITOR AT THE OXJAM FASHION SHOW – WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE EVENT?Hmmm.... It was not too organized ;-) I’m not really a fashion stylist so its hard for me to judge the outfits but it seems that there was nothing spectacular about them. As a photographer I’m always more interested in the lighting conditions and these were terrible. It was almost completely dark. This is actually one of the most important things the organisers of the fashion show should think of. If you organise a fashion show, only a couple of people will see it. The rest will watch the pictures. So its the most important thing to get proper the lighting. I can sadly say that only the London Fashion Week has it sorted out properly. All the other shows are

poorly lit, too dark, different light intensity in different parts of the catwalk etc.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANS FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS AS REGARD PHOTOGRAPHY?3 years is a long time ;-) There are lots of things I have in mind. As for the studio work, I’d like to open at least one in Europe and one in Brazil. It could be done with cooperation with local photographers and could work as a loose agreement. We would like to extend the brand a bit to other countries. As for the assignments. I’d like to focus a bit more on editorials and come back to what I really love which is documentary. There are lots of stories to be told, some of them may change something in this world so I wanna explore it further. Photography can be powerful tool to bring things closer to us and help us understand them (sometimes even notice them).Also I’ll be delivering courses for photographers (this is a project we are working on – allPhoto School of Photography). This will be everything starting from basic training for beginners to advanced workshops of keen amateurs. We are also starting our Boudoir photography service.

IS YOUR STUDIO LONDON BASED?Yes, its in Kentish Town.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS?It depends if you want to live from photography or you wanna explore the medium as a hobby. I guess in the first case you have to remember that photography is a business! In the end you produce a picture which needs to be

bought by someone. So there must be a need for it. You need to know what you going to deliver (what kind of photography) to whom (who is your target group) and how (how you going to reach them). Many people want to be photographers but lack the understanding that on the market where you have lots of people able to deliver product of similar quality these are not to photo skills which sell you but the business skills. Even further, a worse photographer with better market approach will have better results that the best photographer without good business approach.

As for the other group... Take pictures, lots of them. I’d quote M. Schmidt here: "Compared to the music, the photographer performs a dual role: it is also a composer and performer.” And his 4 rules that make a good picture:

HOW DO YOU FIND THE JOURNEY TOSUCCESS SO FAR?Exiting..., full of challenges, a bit stressful as

well ;-) Its a long journey and its a job for years. You need to constantly develop yourself, challenge everything in your life and in photography in general.

¿CUÁNTO TIEMPO HA SIDO FOTÓGRAFO? He estado en la fotografía desde que era niño. Mi padre tenía un cuarto oscuro en nuestro lugar y se utiliza para tomarfotografías, así lo pensaba yo paradesarrollar negativos y las copias. Fueentonces cuando nadie soñaba siquiera de la fotografía digital. Así que he tenidosiempre la fotografía en la parte de mi vida. Sin embargo tengo un master en gestión de negocios y enviado 7 añostrabajando como gerente de proyectos / consultor en administración de empresasconsultoras y bancos, y luego decidí queno es realmente el medio ambiente que me gustaría pasar toda mi vida y necesitaba un cambio. Así que hace unos 4 años quepasó a la fotografía y ha trabajado comofotógrafo de tiempo completo desdeentonces

¿POR QUÉ DECIDIÓ VENIR A INGLATERRA PARA EJERCER SU OFICIO? Siempre he querido viajar por el mundo. Después de dejar mi trabajo me pasé todoun año en América del Sur (principalmenteBrasil), y luego vivió un año en Dublín, por eso decidí venir a Londres, ya queparece ser un buen lugar para trabajarcomo fotógrafo. Londres es una ciudad muy vibrante, siempre he amado sudiversidad. Es como una píldora del mundo. Usted puede encontrar cualquiercosa aquí.

¿POR QUÉ LA MODA FOTOGRAFÍA?La moda es en realidad una de las pocascosas que hago. Siempre me gustó la modacomo una forma de expresar y describir a

ti mismo. En muchas maneras que ustedpuede encontrar gran cantidad de arte en esaárea también. Y en todo lo que Londres estáinfluenciada por las diferentes comunidadespara que tenga un diseño contemporáneo con la mezcla (por ejemplo) influye en Asia o África. Es muy inspirador. Aparte de la moda que trabajo en fotografíacomercial, con un montón de trabajo de estudio (maquillaje, disparos en la cabeza, carteras), eventos fotografía (fiestas, conciertos, pasarelas) y muchos otros. No me gusta ceñirse a un área particular de la fotografía, ya que sería un poco aburrida paramí. Yo sé que aquí la gente tiende a especializarse, pero creo que si eres un buenfotógrafo debe ser capaz de dispararcualquier cosa.

TIENE SU TRABAJO HA SIDO OFRECIDO EN REVISTAS DE MODA? QUE? Fotografié muchas pasarelas por lo que estosfueron presentados en muchos periódicos y revistas (Australia Times, Conquer, Dilemas(Polonia), ¡Qué Moda (Estonia), en Factio(EU). En cuanto a los brotes de la maneraque he hecho yo un par de sesiones de la diva Escribano (Reino Unido, EU.), Uziri(Nigeria). Editoriales son algo que quieroseguir estudiando, ya que no han tenidodemasiado tiempo para ello por ahora.

VEO QUE ASISTIR ALGUNOS EVENTOS DE MODA? CÓMO SE SELECCIONA SU PROPIA CUENTA O NO OBTENER MÁS INVITADOS A?Depende. Si esto es algo grande, como la London Fashion Week, me la solicitud en nombre de las revistas que trabajo. Tengo un montón de muy invita, así, miro algunas de ellas yo mismo. Depende de las situaciones.

VEO DE ALGUNOS DE SUS TRABAJOS QUE HA SIDO DE ÁFRICA PARA ALGUNOS BROTES-QUE PARTE Y POR QUÉ? Yo solía trabajar con un tipo que era de Nigeria. Él es un fotógrafo, así que quería ir a Lagos a explorar el mercado de allá. Parece que Nigeria va a ser un buen mercado para que en los próximos años.

¿COLABORA CON DISEÑADORES O NO SÓLO REALIZAN TRABAJO REMUNERADO? Colaboro con diseñadores, pero como estoyviviendo de la fotografía (en oposición a "fotógrafos domingo muchos) que necesitopara equilibrar un poco. En cuanto al trabajo de estudio, me gustaría abrir al menosuno en Europa y uno en Brasil. Se podríahacer con la cooperación con los fotógrafoslocales y podría funcionar como un acuerdosuelto. Nos gustaría ampliar un poco la marcaa otros países. En cuanto a las asignaciones.

Me gustaría centrarme un poco más en los editoriales y volver a lo que realmente me gusta, que es de tipo documental. Hay un montón de historias que contar, algunas de ellas pueden cambiar algo en este mundo porlo que quiero es seguir estudiando. La fotografía puede ser una herramienta poderosapara llevar las cosas más cerca de nosotros y nos ayudan a entender (a veces incluso les aviso).

También voy a ser la entrega de cursos paralos fotógrafos (este es un proyecto queestamos trabajando - allPhoto Escuela de Fotografía). Aún más, un fotógrafo peor con enfoque de mercado mejor tener mejores resultados que el mejor fotógrafo sin enfoque un buen negocio. En cuanto al otro grupo ... Tome fotografías, muchas de ellas.
