4 - DREDGING DAYS 2012

From CEDA president Anders Jensen

WELCOME TO CEDA DREDGING DAYS

In a break with tradition, this year CEDA’s signature event,CEDA Dredging Days, will be held in Abu Dhabi, UnitedArab Emirates. This unique opportunity takes advantageof the substantive dredging programmes in the MiddleEast, occasioned by the extensive coastal infrastructuredevelopments in the region and the development of theoffshore oil and gas industry.

CEDA Dredging Days has a long, strong tradition of beingthe premier technical forum for presenting and debatingnew ways of thinking, innovative approaches and the

cutting-edge dredging tools and technology. This year’s programme offers a wide range of highlyrelevant papers, drawing on knowledge and experiencefrom projects in the Middle East and worldwide. The technical sessions will be complemented by anoutstanding programme of site visits and a dredgingexhibition. There will also be ample opportunities fornetworking and socialising, including an impressiveprogramme for accompanying persons.

This year, the conference venue and accommodationwill be under one roof. As a bonus, the Beach Rotanaalso features some of Abu Dhabi’s finest restaurantsand a spa. It has a unique blend of traditional Arabianhospitality and breathtaking modern luxury.

As a member of the technical papers and programmecommittee and with 20 years’ experience of working asa consultant in the region, I am really looking forwardto this event. It will give all participants a uniqueopportunity to learn about the region’s vibrant dredgingmarket, to make new contacts and to meet up with oldfriends and colleagues.

I would like to thank our sponsors – National MarineDredging Company, the main sponsor of the event, aswell as Gulf Cobla and Vuyk Engineering Rotterdamand IHS DPC, our official media partner – for theirvaluable support.

I encourage you to take full advantage of this rareopportunity to learn and to discuss dredging with yourpeers and to share some enjoyable times together.Welcome to CEDA Dredging Days 2012!

Professor Cees van Rhee of Delft University ofTechnology and chairman of CEDA Dredging Days’Papers and Programme Committee outlines thisyear’s event

Virtue, Venture and Vision in the Coastal Zonehas been chosen as the theme of the conference.

Virtue in this context is environmental awareness andconcern. Successful developments take account ofenvironmental factors at the planning stage, buildingthese into innovative project design. The emphasis hereis working with nature rather than attempting to imposeon it, which allows for the achievement of long-termsustainable solutions.

Venture is the development of the coast for commercialpurposes benefitting the local and regional economy.

Vision is long-term planning for aesthetic reasons, creating a sustainable future. The aim is to support anddelight those dependent on the coastal zone.

The focus of CEDA Dredging Days 2012 will be ondredging activities for the offshore oil and gas industryand dredging for infrastructure and trade development.

In the opening session, our keynote speaker from theAbu Dhabi government will set the scene. Mr Amer AlHammadi, executive director planning and infrastructure

of the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, will give aninsight into Abu Dhabi’s urban development strategyfollowing on from their 2030 Vision document.

In the subsequent sessions, presentations willamplify these subjects with papers focussing onport development, access channel dredging and thereclamation of artificial islands for oil exploration – thelatter very much a speciality in the region.

The environmental aspects of dredging are importantwithin the Dredging Days event. Two sessions aredevoted to subjects related to sustainable development:working with nature and measures to reduce the impactof dredging works such as silt curtains.

For a dredging project to be successful, the equipmentused must be fit for purpose. Therefore papers on thelatest developments in equipment and instrumentationwill also be presented in the programme. Combined withthis technical session is the traditional academic session, which provides an opportunity for students to presenttheir work on more fundamental issues that do notadhere directly to the main focus of the conference.

All papers have been peer-reviewed by internationalexperts to guarantee relevance, timeliness and qualityand will be published in the subsequent onlineconference proceedings.

In all, we can state that we’re presenting a veryinteresting programme that’s sure to add value to yourprofessional life – and it’s a chance to meet and networkwith your fellow dredging enthusiasts.

CEDA wishes to thankAnton Hoogendoorn,Ali Helmi, Ahmed Zaajand Hani Howeedyfrom NMDC for theirsupport and muchvalued advice.

• A reclamation project for the city of Abu Dhabiinvolved the cladding of the side facing the sea withprecast panels to give a pleasant, aesthetic finish, however lack of space meant that the usual methodsof excavation would require the use of heavy andcostly equipment over a prolonged period of time

• An innovative solution was to install the precast fasciapanels during the diaphragm wall construction, and apatent for this process was filed in 2010

• The wall was completed in 2010, with the importantadvantage that both time and money were saved inthe overall project schedule. Wall construction leadtime was halved and costs divided by three, whilethe investment for the precast panels was the sameas for traditional cladding

• Quality monitoring system to optimise reclamationperformance in presence of high fines

GCCcitizens do not need a visa to enter the UAE but allother countries not listed above will need to apply for aBusiness, Tourist, Transit or Visit Visa prior to theirtrip. Some airlines, travel agencies and hotels may be ableto arrange this for you. Alternatively, apply through yournearest UAE embassy or call +971 2 666 4442.

• Prescriptions: if you take any kind of medication, check whether your drugs are on the banned list forthe United Arab Emirates. Anything containing anaddictive element, for example, over-the-counter coldand flu remedies containing codeine, are banned. YouMUST obtain a letter from your physician regarding yourmedicines and that must be authenticated by a notary.Check with the medical department of your nearestUAE embassy for an up-to-date list of proscribed drugs.Penalties for bringing any drugs into the UAE are severe.

• Money can be obtained ahead of your trip or in AbuDhabi. The UAE dirham (AED or Dhs) is divided into 100fils. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in thecity. You will need to show your passport to changeforeign currency or traveller’s cheques at banks, hotelsor licensed exchanges. Banking hours are usually Saturdayto Thursday, 08:00-13:00 but some shopping malls havebranches open in the evenings. If you’re shopping in themarkets (souks), cash is best. ATMs are generally availableat the airport, shopping malls and at banks.

• Given that December temperatures in Abu Dhabiare about 24ºC during the day but drop to around13ºC at night, pack sensibly. Yes, it’s tempting to thinkyou’ll live in shorts or sundresses for a week, but mosthotels, restaurants, malls and offices are air-conditioned.Take a jacket, sweater or wrap for the evenings andstick to natural fibres where possible. And comfortableshoes – feet swell in the heat. Think ‘smart-casual’ for

the Dredging Days’ conference, ‘comfortable’ for thetechnical visit and ‘covered arms and legs’ for sightseeingand shopping. Keep the shorts for the hotel pool.

Once you’re there...• Dining: Rotana Beach Hotel houses 10 world-classfood & beverage venues.

• Shopping: there’s a shopping mall – the Abu DhabiMall – next door to Beach Rotana or take a taxi to theMarina Mall, another large one.

• Tipping is common but not mandatory. Toprestaurants can add 10% service charge and a 6%tourism levy – check if these are included in the menuprices. If no charge is made, you can opt to tip 10-15%.And all over the world, taxi drivers like tips.

• Do not – under any circumstances – takephotographs of the airport, military installations, portsor government offices. Only take photographs on thetechnical visit if your guide has advised it’s permissible.Generally speaking, it’s polite to ask permission beforephotographing men and you should not photographwomen or children at all. Tourist sites should be fineunless it has a women-and-children-only area, in whichcase it isn’t.

General information

• The UAE is four hours ahead of UTC (Co-ordinatedUniversal Time) so adjust your calling timesaccordingly when phoning the home office

• The Islamic holy day is Friday and most organisationsoperate a Friday / Saturday weekend

• Most government departments, embassies andconsulates work from 08:00-16:00 but call before youvisit, to check hours

• Many people will speak English but not all – so try outa few courtesies (see ‘useful phrases’, above)

• Alcohol is available, particularly in hotel bars, butoutside the hotels you may have to show your ID toprove you’re a visitor not a local

• In non-residential areas, restaurants and cafes mayallow smoking so, if that’s essential – or conversely, would ruin your evening – check with your hotel’sconcierge before booking

• Women can drive and walk around unescorted in thecity, but respect local sensibilities – don’t wear shorttight clothes and do keep your shoulders covered

• If you plan to stay on for a few days, don’t walk: thecity is quite spread out, it’s hot, and there are veryfew pedestrian crossings. And don’t drive – parkingin the city is apparently difficult, and there are localparticularities about u-turns and more. Ask your all-knowing hotel concierge about buses, taxis, where togo, what to see, and almost anything else you needto know.
