QUICK FACTS

ABOUT KANSASKansas returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last season’s 21-9 team, which placed second in the Big 12 with a 12-6 record. KU advanced to its 31st-consecutive NCAA Tournament.

Senior guard Remy Martin, a transfer from Arizona State, was named the Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year and was joined on the preseason all-conference team with senior teammates Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack. Junior Christian Braun and redshirt-sophomore Jalen Wilson join Agbaji and McCormack as returning starters. Wilson will not play against Emporia State due to a suspension.

Martin led the Pac-12 in scoring in 2020-21 with a 19.1 ppg and is a two-time all-conference first-team selection. Agbaji led KU in scoring last season at 14.1 ppg and led the Big 12 in three-point field goals made at 2.6 per contest. McCormack led the conference in field goal percentage at 51.5 percent and averaged 13.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last season. Wilson was second in the Big 12 with a 7.9 rebound average and he scored 11.8 points per outing. Braun was second on the team with 52 three-point field goals made last season and he averaged 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest.

Other returners for Kansas include super-senior Mitch Lightfoot (3.4 ppg, 2.5 rpg), redshirt-sophomore Dajuan Harris Jr. (2.4 ppg, 2.2 assists) and walk ons Chris Teahan and Michael Jankovich.

Martin is one of four transfers on the KU roster and 10 newcomers total. KANSAS IN EXHIBITION PLAYKansas is 90-9 in exhibition history and has won 31-straight exhibition contests dating back to Oct. 30, 2012. KU has won the last 52 exhibition games in Allen Fieldhouse beginning in 1994. With the 102-42 win versus Pitt State (Oct. 31, 2019), Kansas has scored 100-plus points in 30 exhibition games, including 14 under head coach Bill Self. The Jayhawks are 58-2 in exhibition play in Self’s 18 seasons at KU.

KANSAS IN PRESEASON NATIONAL POLLSFor the 10th-consecutive year, Kansas enters the 2021-22 season ranked seventh or higher as KU is No. 3 in the 2021-22 preseason Associated Press poll released Oct. 18.

This is also the 12th time in the last 13 seasons that the Jayhawks have entered the season No. 7 or higher by the AP, including nine times in the top five and five in the top three. KU was No. 1 in 2009-10, No. 3 in 2016-17, No. 1 in 2018-19, No. 3 in 2019-20 and No. 3 in 2021-22.

Last season, Kansas entered the preseason ranked No. 6 nationally in the Associated Press poll and finished the year at No. 12. The Jayhawks were ranked in the AP top 10 in the first nine polls of the 2020-21 season.

Under 19th-year and Hall of Fame head coach Bill Self, this is the 16th time that Kansas enters the season ranked seventh or higher in the Associated Press preseason poll. Historically, the No. 3 ranking marks the 24th time since the 1992-93 season that Kansas will enter the season seventh or higher.

Kansas could possibly play 13 games against teams ranked or receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25. KU will twice play against No. 5 Texas and No. 8 Baylor in Big 12 contests and will also face No. 10 Kentucky, while Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, St. John’s and Colorado are receiving votes. The Jayhawks could possibly play No. 14 Alabama and Drake, who is receiving votes, in the ESPN Events Invitational, Nov. 25-26-28, in Orlando, Florida.

Like it was in preseason Associated Press poll, Kansas is ranked No. 3 in the preseason USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll released Oct. 27.

This is the eighth-straight year the Jayhawks have opened the season in the top-five and KU is ranked in the preseason for the 30th time in time in the 33-year history of the poll. With the preseason ranking, Kansas has 577 all-time appearances in the poll, including 312 in the top five.

The No. 3 ranking marks the 11th time KU has been preseason No. 3 or higher in the coaches’ poll, including five of the last six years (No. 2 in 2016-17, No. 3 in 2017-18, No. 1 in 2018-19, No. 3 in 2019-20 and No. 3 in 2021-22). Additionally, it is the 16th time in the Bill Self era the Jayhawks have been preseason seventh or higher, including each of the last 10 seasons.

Kansas could potentially play 15 games against teams ranked or receiving votes in the coaches’ preseason poll this season. Those include: No. 5 Texas (twice), No. 8 Baylor (twice), No. 11 Kentucky, No. 13 Alabama; and receiving votes: Michigan State, Texas Tech

(twice), West Virginia (twice), Oklahoma State (twice), Drake and Colorado. Alabama and Drake are potential opponents in the ESPN Events Invitational, Nov. 25, 26 and 28 in Orlando, Florida.

In 2020-21 Kansas opened the year No. 5 in the preseason coaches’ poll and ended No. 16.

FOUR JAYHAWKS ARE ON HALL OF FAME WATCH LISTSIn October, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced watch lists for its “Starting Five” for the 2021-22 season. Four Jayhawks were among the 20 watch list honorees.

Kansas senior David McCormack was named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award watch list, while Remy Martin is on the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, Ochai Agbaji on the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award and Jalen Wilson on the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch lists of 20 candidates for every starting five.

College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee where a winner will be selected.
