Entry # 3placed second and is coached by Mr. Angie Fernandez & Ms. Rosalinda cadaros

The Philippine Welding Research and Development Society (PWRDS) renewed its tie-up agreement with the university for another term.

The MOA signing was participated in by Atty. Augusto W. Go, UC President, Atty. Nendell Hanz Abella, VC-Administrative Affairs, Dean Bartolome Puzon and PWRDS Vice- President Mr. Jesselito R. Godofredo, and Ms. Therese C. Saberon, PWRDS Administrative Officer on August 9, 2007.

The agreement unites the university and PWRDS in continuing to provide Welding Refresher Courses to Cebuanos through the one-storey structure in UC-METC which houses an air-condi-tioned lecture room, office and welding facilities for enrollees. PWRDS is affiliated with TESDA.

The joint venture provides refresher courses, even for those without a background in welding. The basic category, the Industrial Welding and Pipe Fitting, is for a beginner who wishes to earn a vocational certificate on the craft. The course can be availed for only P7,500, which already includes materials and plant tour.

If an enrollee completes the basic course and wishes to move on to the next category, he/she will undergo evaluation. If a candidate already has a license, he/she will be automatically recommended to level two, the Gas Tungsten/ Shielded Metal Art Welding or TIG.

As in the previous year, three classes will run simultaneously to coach interested individuals.

“While there are students doing practical exercises, there is another class attending a lecture,” explains Ms. Gemma Cabal of PWRDS.

Regular morning and afternoon classes run for 19 days, while evening sessions run for almost two months, scheduled for three hours from Mondays to Fridays and whole day Sundays. Classes are limited to small groups to optimize learning. In fact, each batch is composed of only 24 persons.

Understandably, considering the courses’ increasing popu-larity, getting a reservation could mean being waitlisted.

The MOA extends the partnership of the parties to another year of offering Welding Courses.

PWRDS and UC renews term MOA signing with (L-R) Dean Bartolome Pozon, Atty. Nendell Hanz L. Abella, VC for Administrative Affairs, Atty. Augusto W. Go, UC President, PWRDS Vice- President Mr. Jesselito R. Godofredo, and Ms. Therese C. Saberon, PWRDS Administrative Officer

The UC Main’s Library Depart-ment launched the National Book Week ’07 with an Orientation on Online Resources with CE Logic, Inc., an affiliate of C&E Publishing Inc.

The presenters flew in from Manila, led by Mr. Isidro Padpad, Executive Assistant of CE Logic. They enlightened library users on the Gale Online Library Resources, eBeam interactive whiteboard technology, and the Library Corporation, the library automated solutions.

Some 97 guests from BSCA, BSMT, AB and IT Colleges were in attendance at the DVD Room on November 29, 2007.

30 UC Main Administration birthday celebrants for November and December 2007 were gathered at the High-School AVR One for lunch. The grace before meals was said by Mr. Rudy U. Aviles.

The affair was initiated by the office of the Vice-Chancellor for Administrative Affairs.

Representatives of the Magsaysay Group of Companies visited UC Main. Speaking before a crowd consisting mostly of HRM students, they introduced career opportunities they could offer in their cruise ship business. They also spoke about their Costa Preparatory Campus’ trainee program for the HRM and Tourism graduates which would include an allowance of Euros250 per month for seven months. After undergoing training, HRM and Tourism graduates working with the company would receive Euros700.

Another foreign shipping organization dropped anchor on UC grounds for a possible partnership, intending to give 100 scholarship grants initially.

International Maritime Employers Committee (IMEC) visited UC Maritime Education and Training Center in Mam-baling campus last November 13, 2007 and inspected the school’s facilities for a tie-up to commence in June, 2008. IMEC was represented by their Secretary General David Dearsly, along with Mr. Joseph Thuillier and Mr. Bob Godall.

The group was met by UC President Atty. Augusto W. Go and the NSA Cadets gave the ceremonial Arrival of Honors.

quoted as saying, “IMEC has become a major player in the shipping community and we must join others, such as the Norwegian and Netherlands Shipowners Associations in investing in maritime training - in a structured way and not just as a group of individual companies doing their own thing.” He also underscored the importance of their training to meet international industry standards.

IMEC’s presence in UC-METC will give rise to a new building on the parade ground of the campus, adjacent to the NSA Dorm and the education of an ini-tial 50 full-scholar freshmen.

The visitors along with Atty. Go, Architect Maxwell Espina and the UC-LM Administrators held a brief meeting. Then, they were off to a tour around the campus. First stop was the Machine Shop. Then they checked the Engine Control Room, Seamanship Laboratory, Training Center Classrooms, Engine Simulator, Full Mission Bridge Simulator, Library, CBT and Media Center, and the Dormitory Complex. Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) dem-onstrations were done while the parties were exploring the campus.

IMEC is an employers’ organization based in Lon-don. The group stands for 121 shipping principals and manning agen-cies all over the world, operating over 5,000 ships and employing over 145,000 seafarers of various nation-alities.

Aimed primarily to equip the National Service Training Program (NSTP) educators, Extension Program implementers, principals, teachers, students and stakeholders with the knowledge, skills and attitudes of good citizenship, some 34 representatives from schools within Cebu and Mandaue Cities gathered at UCLM for the Orientation and Seminar for the promotion of the Good Citizenship Movement (GCM).

On December 5, 2007, the annex audio visual room of the LM campus was the venue for the event. The delegates were from Cebu Institute of Technology, University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of the Philippines-Cebu, St. Theresa’s College, University of San Carlos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, and even from the Naval Reserve (NRCEV).

They were welcomed by Ms. Judith Almonte, UCLM NSA Assistant Project Coordinator.

The rationale was delivered by Sr. Sandra G. Clemente, RSCJ, Director Community Extension Services and Development and Civic Welfare Training Services (CESDEV/NSTP-CWTS). The first topic was on Core Filipino Values, rendered by Commissioner Teresita Baltazar, GCM Committee Chair.

After the break, Bro. Hermie Ceniza, Director of GCM spoke of “Teaching the GCM module” which includes the 16 good citizenship values enshrined in the preamble of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. These basic values are: faith in the Almighty God; respect for life; order; work; concern for the family and future generations; love; freedom; peace; truth; justice; unity; equality; respect for law and government; patriotism; promotion of the common good; concern for the environment.

He then shared informative video clips of our country’s economic condi-tion, from being one of the most progressive countries before Martial Law in 1972 and today, where our Asian neighbors have surpassed us in so many ways. The presentation was entitled “Ang Pilipinas, Saan Ito Ngayon”. Then he showed the crowd moving power-point presentations of the country’s social ills. Guide questions were given to aid the participants’ reflection who subsequently presented their views to the assembly.

Towards the end of Bro. Hermie’s talk, he shared slides about the geese’ v-formation which inspired the group to practice teamwork and share that same trait with their students.

After lunch, Sr. Luz Emmanuel Soriano, RA, spoke about “Caring for the Mother Earth.” She presented repulsive yet real statistics of the global state which were based on the comprehensive United Nations study.

Towards the end of the affair, linkages among schools were forged, particularly for the institutions’ collaboration to commit to make Cebu a pilot area of GCM.

Veritas, New Filipino and “K” Line visit UC

My UC Sim launching and MOA signing

Bigwigs of Veritas Maritime, New Filipino Maritime, and “K” Line Maritime Training Corporation visited UC Maritime Education and Training Center in Mambaling campus on October 30, 2007.

In attendance were “K” Line Maritime Training Corporation’s (KMTC) President Ms. Virginia Lineses, C/O Renato Sto. Domingo, Veritas Maritime’s Capt. Makoto Kono, Capt. Lexington Calumpang, Engr. Joseph Alvin Olabre, Capt. Jose Ramon Diamante and Engr. Frank Canlobo, together with Capt. Toriblo Mercado of New Filipino Maritime.

They conducted testing procedures and interviews to the METC Cadets. Also, a documentary orientation for their 10 second year scholars under the 2-1-1 curriculum was done. These sophomore

cadets will take their shipboard training in March, 2008. “We prefer to give more weight on the Psychological testing results rather than

on the technical aspects because we can always work on what they lack in education, whereas one’s personality is a more difficult aspect to improve,” said Ms. Lineses.

The visitors intended to take in 25-30 Engine cadets, which is equivalent to one section. Though “K” Line has previously sponsored the education of cadets, this is the first time the companies’ will take in an increased number of students who will enjoy scholarship and ultimately have their shipboard training onboard the principal’s vessels. These candidates for scholarship are sourced from different parts of the country and will study in UC.

“We can guarantee them lifetime careers with us,” assured Ms. Lineses. She is hopeful that this will lessen the future seafarers who hunt for jobs from shipping companies in Manila.

“The university’s core value of Innovation could not be more ap-parent in this endeavor,” Ms. Ana Tranzona was heard saying during the My Globe UC SIM Roadshow on September 28, 2007 at the UC Banilad AVR 2. Her words rang true as the afternoon progressed with the Globe personnel enlightening the gathered university officers and a few student leaders.

The UC SIM offered by the carrier enables the prepaid subscribers—particularly the UC denizens - access to events, announcements and grades, thru the My UC Mobile School Assistant.

The said affinity SIM is also compatible with G-cash, unlimited text and other Globe products.

Transactions like tuition and bill payments, donations and even passenger vessel tickets’ purchase can also be done through G-cash. “There will be no need to queue up at the cashier to pay for your tuition,” informed Victor San Pedro of Globe.

The UC populace can also be “more friendly with each other” with the special rates of 75 centavos per sms or text message and 10 centavos per second for voice calls.

Another merchandise promoted during the affair was the I-AMAX or the Instant Autoload Max by Payvenue. It was also mentioned that there will be a vending machine for it. The I-AMAX can also load on demand, even for those without load balance - even thru a credit line deductible from the payroll for the UC employees who wish to retail.

The Roadshow was attended by some 80 UC personnel and key officers, and 24 students. It was organized by the UC Banilad Student Affairs Office and is a preview of the launching which is set on November 5, 2007. On the said date, 15,000 affinity sims were given out in the four UC Campuses.

The memorandum of agreement was inked on November 14, 2007 at the UC Main Conference Room.
