The hugely awaited culmination of country’s prestigious Awards Programme of the year saw some of the most celebrated interior
designers and architects from across the country. Honours bestowed, awards conferred, smiles shared and creativity applauded – IIID Anchor
Awards 2013 had it all! With interior design reaching a new high in the country, the scrutiny level was raised too. But the 579 entries for the
awards reflected the unflinching confidence of the participants.

The effectiveness of this strategy gives the participants to compete with their regional counterparts first round and the best amongst them, gets to contend at the National level. The format ensures widespread participation and aims to bring into spotlight, talent from across the country.
During the media meet, Tushar Desai, IIID Awards Committee Chairman, addressed the media on the ideologies of IIID and the role of the prestigious awards. He elaborated, “These awards are a quest to find people who are path breakers and torch bearers in search of excellence.IIID firmly believes that to award excellence, it must pursue and achieve excellence with highest possible integrity in conducting every single aspect of the awards programme. It is completely committed to create the best platform for participants, the best jury process, the best awards experience and the best awards validation for the winners.”The IIID Awards Programme primarily
March 22, 2014 – a day marked in the calendars of the entire interior design fraternity! It was a day, when all members of the field gathered to share their body of work, discuss the future of interior design and above all, felicitate the best among them. The Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID) initiated the Awards Programme to acknowledge the exemplary work in the field of Interior Design from the year 1996.In 2011, ANCHOR by PANASONIC joined hands in the endeavour of IIID and since then the awards are popularly known as the IIID ANCHOR Awards.
The National Awards Nite was scheduled to start at 6:30 pm at ITC Gardenia, in the Garden City of India, Bengaluru. With anticipation at its peak, the crowd started pouring in quite early. The stage got its finishing touches; work of the participants orderly displayed in panels, lighting tested, tables immaculately set with flowers and candles, waiting to be lit. The OSCARS of the Indian Interior Design was ready for a showcase.
Design Media Meet
Prior to the main event, the press meet provided a networking platform between the designers and the outside world. The awards were first conducted at the

fulfills the following objectives:

The pre-event meet was significant, because the Jury Members and shortlisted Awardees including young design enthusiasts reviewed the steps of IIID’s initiative to spread awareness about the field. The need of “Indian identity” as a concept in design was debated. The exchange of views brought out aspects like design detail as a meaningful measure of good design, in addition to primary features like context of site and client’s needs.

The jury had a mix of prominent academicians, illustrious architects and Interior Designers, distinguished media professionals and noted past award

Bimal Mistry, Member of IIID Awards Committee, gave insights on the IIID Awards methodology emphasising the transparent judging process; the jury members did not adapt to vote but chose a winner with mutual consent, the arguments and discussions were video recorded and later shown to the audience. He also stated that the winning entries would be documented and published as a journal. “All the winners, a motley group of 21 from 579, can feel very proud of their efforts as the jury, comprising of some of the finest minds in the country has been extremely demanding and unforgiving. They truly represent the best in the country and IIID salutes them for leading the way,“ said Tushar Desai, Vice President IIID, on the noteworthy jury panel. Adding to the same, Ashok Gangar, Vice President – Sales and Marketing, Anchor electrical Pvt Ltd said,”eminent architects, Interior Designers, design consultants and editors forming the jury for this competition aids in constantly raising the level of competition and bar of excellence.”
The winners were selected on the basis of six criteria: Originality; Innovation and Creativity; Functionality;efficiency &Fidelity to the Client’s Brief; Contextual Reference & environmental Concerns; Detailing & Use of Materials; Cohesion to Concept in Design Development;and Sensorial & Spatial experiences.
The Evening
The evening started off with a welcoming traditional song to invoke the blessings of Goddess Saraswati by
Malini Chadaga. Chairperson of the IIID Bangalore Regional Chapter, Bindi Saolapurkar was elated to have the coveted award function hosted in the city. Her speech brought out the active involvement of the chapter in “unifying the design fraternity and strengthening interior design profession” by means of various programmes. To continue with the spirit of awarding creative excellence, she ended her talk by quoting Mary Lou, “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun.”
President Talks
Nitin Saolapurkar, President IIID, greeted the audience and shared the journey and vision of IIID,“Started in a garage 40 years ago, IIID embarked to spot, recognise excellence in interior design and to boost the creativity and enthusiasm of the young, upcoming professionals.” He said, “It is comm-enced to raise consciousness about design in our society, which would aid us to bring about a change in the quality of living.” IIID is working towards setting an Archive cell, which would trace the history of IIID and its achievement, adding value to the current position it has acquired.As the President of IIID, Nitin Saolapurkar strongly felt the need

to ensure that good standard of design education is available and imparted to the young. He revealed that IIID is charting down the syllabus for Interior Design education and working towards making IIID a regulatory body, which will set standards for Interior Design as a profession. The IIID 2013 National Awards Nite was a gratifying night for him as few of the IIID Past Presidents and members, whose noteworthy contribution helped in shaping IIID, were being honoured. He was proud that IIID received a record breaking number of entries, which spanned across 18 categories for the IIID 2013 Anchor Awards and he only hoped that the number would increase every year.
IIID and Anchor Collaboration
IIID with a base membership of 8000 professionals and trade members across 28 chapters and centres is one of the most active professional bodies with influential presence in the field. It was founded to establish healthy trade practices and enhance the image of Interior Design Profession. Since 2011, it has joined hands with ANCHOR by Panasonic, a 50-year-old company. Anchor, part of Panasonic Corporation, commits itself towards enriching lives of people in the nation through its excellence in product design, aiding IIID’s vision of fostering excellence in interior design. The synergy of these two bodies saw the participation jump from 265 to 579 entries in three years. Their association with IIID expands the boundaries of interior design to new paradigms. Ashok Gangar expressed his gratification to the alliance and said, “It is an honour to be associated with the most prestigious award of the design fraternity. We are pleased to be a part of such an initiative that not only helps the professionals but also the upcoming designers to exhibit their skills and talent.” Sunil Ramteke, National Head, Anchor by Panasonic added that they were proud to partner with IIID for the credibility it had achieved. He further praised the impartial decision making processand proudly stated that IIID has

never honoured any specific architect out of personal interest.
Honours Bestowed
Nandini Shankar, executive Committee Member, IIID introduced the individuals who made selfless contribution to IIID. These members have served to create a vision for IIID and have play a vital role in bringing it to the current stature and were duly honoured at the award function.
Rajan Bahry was the recipient of the first honour. He took the initiative to sponsor IIID’s first newsletter and journal. He was the publisher of IIID’s first book on Residential Interiors in 1988.
IIID veteran and Statesman, Ramesh Khanna was the next to be felicitated. He has dedicated his service to IIID for 10 years, switching between Treasurer and Vice President Trade under many Presidents.
Ramesh Daswani, observed by many as a dynamic team participant, is known

for his proactive role in IFI related events, especially the Design Sutra. He is the man who contributed a lot to the formation of IIID Pune Chapter.
Kashyap Patwa, another legacy creator, is the former Vice President of IIID. He has been lauded and appreciated as the “perfect advisor” in the role of Vice President. He has been instrumental in setting up IIID Mumbai office premises and also initiating IIID Awards. He has been the Co-Chairman of the Awards Committee for 15 years and has worked tirelessly to advance the growth of the Institute.
A special honour of Fellow Membership of IIID was given to Bankim Dave, an exemplary Past President. He is one of the most highly respected individuals and under his able leadership, IIID’s presence grew in all spheres.

The National Awardees
After informative talks by different members, the evening saw a Jazz performance by the group-Aarti Rao and the Kaya Quintet. The show was quite mesmerising. But the anticipation of the award winners doubled.
It is indeed quite a merit for a professional to be honoured by a fellow professional. Contesting in what is considered as the OSCARS of Interior Design is not an easy task and receiving an award is undoubtedly praiseworthy.

After months of preparation and organisation, the show ended in high spirits. Some of the best works in the field was celebrated. Sigh of relief was seen on many faces, noise decibels increased, the food and wine added to the mood. The winners were smiling and the ones who did not win were determined to bounce back. Such was the magic of IIID Anchor Awards!
