Ocean sciencesatellite blasts offfrom CaliforniaLOS ANGELES, 11 June—An interna-
tional satellite rocketed into low-Earthorbit Friday on a mission to track changesin the amount of salt in the upper levels ofthe world’s oceans.
A Delta 2 rocket carrying theArgentine-built satellite blasted off shortlybefore 7:30 am under cloudy skies atVandenberg Air Force on the CentralCalifornia coast.
The rocket and its internationalpayload roared southwestward over thePacific, quickly vanishing into a deepmarine layer that typically shrouds thestate this time of year.
Michael Freilich, who heads NASA’sEarth science division, was relieved andoverjoyed the satellite “is working so wellfrom the beginning.”
NASA’s Aquarius instrument willmeasure the concentration of dissolvedsalt at the sea surface. The amount of brinein the ocean remains fairly constant, butsalt levels in the uppermost layer varyaround the globe.
NASA will produce monthly mapsdetailing sea salt changes during the three-year mission. Scientists hope the data willhelp them better predict future climate
change and short-term climate phenomenasuch as El Nino and La Nina.
For decades, ocean salinity has beencharted the old-fashioned way — by shipsand buoys. The problem with that is thereare gaps in the data since researchers don’thave surveys for many parts of the ocean.

WASHINGTON, 11June—Two new ele-ments are being added tothe periodic table afterthey were discoveredthrough a collaborationbetween US and Russianscientists, a top USchemistry expert saidFriday.
The elements are thefirst to be added sincecopernicium in 2009.They have not yet beennamed, but are known fornow as 114 and 116.
“Over the past 250years, there have beenbasically 100 new ele-ments discovered,” saidPaul Karol, a chemistryprofessor at CarnegieMellon University andchair of the committeethat recommended theadditions.
“But it is becomingmore and more difficultto do this so when a newelement is discovered, it’sactually pretty exciting.”
The pair were foundthrough atom-smasherexperiments called cross-bombardments, accord-ing to research publishedby the InternationalUnion of Pure and Appli-ed Chemistry.
The experiments, hosted at the JointInstitute of NuclearResearch in Dubna,Russia and incooperation with a USteam based at LawrenceLivermore National

“So they smash thosetwo together and if theyfuse, if they stick, youhave then made some-thing that is the sum ofthe two pieces and that iswhere the new elementscome from,” Karol toldAFP.

IBM scientists created the circuitfrom graphene, a single layer of carbonatoms in a honeycomb structureconsidered the thinnest electronicmaterial.

“Just a few days before IBMcommemorates its 100th anniversary, our scientists have achieved ananotechnology milestone whichcontinues the company’s century-longpursuit of innovation.”
The graphene circuit works as atype of broadband frequency mixer thatcould improve performance and lowercost of smartphones and other deviceswith wireless connections, accordingto IBM. POTSDAM, 11 June—Men and women lose 30percent of their muscle strength from ages 50-70 butGerman researchers say weight training counteractsthis muscular loss. Frank Mayer and colleagues atthe University of Potsdam investigated the extent ofthe effects that can be achieved by strength orresistance training in people age 60 and older. Thestudy, published in the Deutsches ArzteblattInternational, finds regular strength, or resistance, training increased muscle strength and reducedmuscular atrophy, and that tendons and bones adapttoo. These successes in turn had a preventive effectin terms of avoiding falls and injuries.
In addition, greater, progressive intensities oftraining yielded greater effects than moderate andlow intensities, the study finds. An intensity of 60percent to 85 percent of the one-repetition-maximumis required to increase muscle mass, the researcherssay.—Internet
