Thursday, August 26, 2010 Sports 12 The Brownsville States-Graphic Friday and Saturday Karaoke with Jerry and Ruby 9 PM - 1AM Cover Charge $2.00 Terry Grandberry cuts to find a running lane The Haywood High Tomcats football team showed both offensive and defensive dominance as they overwhelmed the JCM Cougars Friday night winning 34-12 at North Side Stadium in Jackson. The slogan for the JCM Cougars was “restore the roar” but on this night the roar was si- lenced by a defense that wouldn’t give easy yard- age and an offense that ran through the opposi- tion. The opening kickoff by JCM was returned for a 61 yard touchdown by Number 3 Justice Brown. The Cougars answered with a 41 yard intercep- tion and a missed PAT that brought the score 7 to 6. The Tomcat defense was dominant against JCM as the defensive line held the running game and passing game in check all night. Terry Grandberry at 5’9 and 198 pounds was too much of a load for the defense as he rushed for 85 yards with two touchdowns on the night with the longest of 30 yards splitting the line and breaking tack- les all the way into the end zone. Jarvis Johnson Number 12 returned a punt in the second quar- ter 63 yards for a touch- down that put the Tom- cats ahead for good. With the score 20 to 6 in favor of Haywood at halftime, the team didn’t let up in the second half warm-ups as the cadence and stretching exercises was loud enough to fill the stadium with the teams motivation. The second half picked up where the first ended with two touchdown runs by the Tomcats, one by Grandberry and the other by No. 30 Tom Minor. The kicking game which was a problem last year showed vast improvement as kicker Willis Hardaway con- verted 4 for 5 on PAT’s. On the touchdown run by Grandberry, the Cou- gars had to be broken up in the end zone as team- mates started fighting with one another because the defense couldn’t con- trol the Tomcats rush. JCM closed out the game with a late touchdown run securing the win. Haywood showed great support for the team as the crowd was larger than that of JCM’s for the game. The main thing that hurt the Tomcats in the game was turnovers and penalties. There were 11 penalties for 76 yards against Haywood. The next game features Haywood against Lib- erty here at home as the Tomcats look to continue to show the dominance shown so far into the sea- son.
