Fought in knee deep mud in southeast Belgium (Flanders), its futility became the basis of the description of the British army as “lions led by donkeys.” This two-hour illustrated lecture describes the political decision to fight there, Haig’s strategy, the changing tactics of both sides, and the role of the principal decision makers. #2809 Athe second Battle of the marne, 1918Just as the first battle of the Marne ended, German hopes for a quick victory in 1914. The second battle spelled the doom of the German Empire in 1918. This expanded version of the battle describes the German offensive in May—June, their attempted crossing of the Marne in July, and the victorious Franco-American counter offensive in late July. The two hour illustrated lecture will include the politi-cal, strategic, and tactical aspects of the battle which turned the tide of the war. And this time, unlike the War of 1812, the U.S. actually recruited and equipped an army and sent it to Eu-rope to take an active part in the battles of that war. This illustrated lecture examines the events and personalities that commanded the headlines in the years of American participation in the First World War and its immediate aftermath, and discusses the profound effect of war on the American political and social scene in those years.
