• Short sentences (max 15 words)

• Use comparisons

• Use the active voice, not the passive voice

• Use descriptive language, describe things the listener can not see

• Repeat important words, avoid synonyms

• Avoid foreign and uncommon words

• Avoid jargon / expert language

• Avoid abbreviations (UNHCR…)

• Avoid numbers and figures

• Avoid percentages (not 50 %; 33 % - better: half; one third)

• Careful with reading quotes, indirect language or a voice clip are better
