ASHRAE 90.1 2010 Updates
Overview• Goal of 90.1-2010 was to have 30% energy savings compared to
2004. The 2007 update only accomplished a 5% savings from 2004.• In 2010 updates were made to the energy efficient design of:
• Building envelopes• Mechanical Systems• Service Water Heating• Lighting Design• Electrical Power

Building EnvelopeThe following Addenda were made to building envelope requirements:•The vertical fenestration must meet the following requirement
• Area South ≥ Area West and Area South ≥ Area East• Exceptions: storefront glazing, urban infill, shaded buildings
•Minimum skylight fenestration area in enclosed spaces that are:• Applies to area that are 5,000 ft2 and greater with ceiling heights greater
than 15 ft, and space types such as offices, lobbies, atriums, concourses, corridors, storage areas, gymnasium/exercise centers, convention centers, automotive service, manufacturing, non-refrigerated warehouses, retail spaces, distribution/sorting areas, transportation, or workshops.
• The total skylight area shall be either; minimum of 3% of the roof area, or such that the daylight area under skylights will be a minimum of half the floor area and provide a minimum skylight effective aperture of at least 1%.
• Exceptions: Climate zones 6 through 8, spaces with lighting power densities less than 0.5 W/ft2, and shaded spaces.
•Maximum window to wall ratio was revised to 30% (from 40% in 2007).•Other miscellaneous envelope addenda:
• “Cool roofs” in climate zones 1,2 and 3• Increased envelop thermal requirements.

• Per 90.1-2010 economizers are now required in all climate zones except 1a and 1b
• 90.1-2010 reduces the size threshold for economizers

• Exhaust air energy recovery systems were previously only required on systems of more than 5,000 cfm and 70% outside air
• Table 6.5.6 shows that energy recovery ventilation is now required in all humid climate zones, 1a through 6a, and cold climate zones 7 and 8.

• New maximum allowable flows in nominal pipe sizes for chilled water and condenser water piping
• Pump head calculations are now mandatory prior to sizing pumps. This is similar to the requirements for load calculations.
