    Christchurch has lost an estimated 6,000 houses due to the 2010-2011 earthquakes. With

    projections o 36,000 workers expected to move to the city or the rebuild, there is a very

    real and urgent housing crisis.

    Cambridge Terrace is located along the Avon River and is still, two years ater the earth-

    quakes, within the CBD closed cordon. Many buildings have been demolished while others

    ate is pending. With a vast area o the neighbourhood having to be rebuilt, this site was

    selected or the potential to revitalise the riverside.

    The proposal is or a multi-unit residential complex with a ocus on connecting the river

    with the neighbourhood. This evolved rom investigations on water supply and treatment

    methods and led on to experimentations with porosity and ow. These studies were car-

    ried out through sponge absorption testings and inormed the building concept and in-

    spired the overall design orm to be canyon-like volumes. The buildings are lited 24metres

    above ground to share the same maximum height o the neighbouring buildings.

    The design intends to integrate public lie o the street with private spaces and examine

    the relationship between these dierent programmes. In order to do this the arrangement

    o the buildings is ocused on enhancing connections between public and private. The

    idea o porosity was also incorporated into the meeting ground between these spaces with

    permeable suraces that allow light, noise and smells to flter through.

    In response to the urgency or single to small household dwellings, the target market is

    ocused on young single households, couples without children, and the working popula-

    tion in the trade area.
