CSI

Cardiological Society of India (CSI) was born on the 4th April, 1948 at Calcutta. It is interesting to note that the CSI was established one year earlier than the formation of the American College of Cardiology. The first Executive Committee meeting of the CSI was held at Calcutta with Dr. B.C. Roy as the President. The first official conference of the CSI was held in 1950 at Calcutta. The scientific council of the CSI is responsible for formation of various subcommittees to help the growth and development of different sub-specialties like, preventive cardiology, rheumatic heart disease, electrophysiology, non-invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology, etc. The Official Journal of the CSI, the India Heart Journal had its modest beginning in 1949 in Calcutta. The Indian Heart Journal at present has achieved international standard and recognition. The capital city of Andhra Pradesh is hosting the 59th Annual CSI conference.

APCSI

AP chapter of CSI was founded in the year 1996. First annual conference of APCSI was organized at Tirupati by Dr.G.Subramanyam, Professor & HOD, Cardiology, SVRRGGH on 30-31st March 1996. We are proud that after 11 years APCSI annual conference is being reorganised at Tirupati again.

TIRUPATI

The town of Tirupati is one of the most ancient and spectacular places of pilgrimage in India. It is situated in the Chittoor district in southern Andhra Pradesh. The town owes its existence to the sacred temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara situated on the Tirumala Hill adjoining it. With a history that dates back to over twelve centuries, the temple is the jewel in the crown of ancient places of worship in southern India.

The Tirumala Hill is 3200 ft above sea level, and is about 10.33 sq miles in area. It comprises seven peaks, representing the seven hoods of Adisesha, thus earning the name, Seshachalam. The seven peaks are called Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri. The sacred temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak, Venkatadri (Venkata Hill), and lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini.

The name Tirupati, meaning ‘the Lord of Lakshmi’ should have been appropriately applied to the village on the Venkata Hill, the abode of the Lord. However, it has been popularly assigned to the municipal town at the foot of the Hill, while the village around the Hill near His temple is called Tirumala (the Sacred Hill). Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) maintains twelve temples and their subshrines in the

Page 5: 12th Annual Conference of Andhra Pradesh Chapter of.doc

Tirumala-Tirupati area. There are several places to visit in the Tirumala-Tirupati area. There is ample literary and epigraphic testimony to the antiquity of the temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara.

SRI VENKATESWARA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

Alleviating human suffering has been a part of dedicated services of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams to the man kind. To provide the most advanced medical technology to the needy, the TTD has launched a monument, a blessing from the Lord by opening Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, a sophisticated super specialty hospital at Tirupati. SVIMS was conceived in the year 1986 on the lines of AIIMS, New Delhi and the foundation stone was laid on 18.04.86 by Late Sri.N.T.Rama Rao, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in the world famous pilgrim town Tirupati. It was established with a view to providing Super Specialty facilities with nominal cost to the poor. The hospital started functioning from 26.02.1993. By an Act of A.P. State Legislature, this institute became a University in 1995. The present Director is Dr.G.Subramanyam.

The following departments are rendering their services for the public : Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Genito Urinary Surgery, Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Oncology, Casualty, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Radiology, Transfusion Medicine, Physiotherapy and Dietetics.

The T.T.Devasthanams brings one of the holiest of offerings ever. Pranadana – a scheme blessed by everything the Lord Himself stands for, Sri Venkateswara Pranadana Trust, aims at providing succor to the needy by offering them free and the best medical care at the TTD run hospitals. The pranadana scheme aims at providing free medical facilities to the poor patients affected with life threatening diseases of the Heart, Kidney, Brain and Cancer etc. The pranadana trust was launched in the month of Sept 2001. So far SVIMS has successfully carried out over 2500 surgeries / treatment to the poor & needy patients in Andhra Pradesh free of cost under this pranadanam scheme.

CARDIOLOGY

The department of cardiology is the first one of its kind in the whole Rayalaseema area of Andhra Pradesh, which offers all the non-invasive, invasive and interventional facilities for all the cardiovascular problems. This department has a fully equipped intensive coronary care unit, non-invasive unit and a cardiac catheterization laboratory, all working smoothly since its inception. Though the department caters primarily to the people of Rayalaseema region, patients do come from all over Andhra Pradesh and even from other states. The number of patients seeking cardiac care is steadily increasing.

Till now around 8000 catheterisation procedures and over 2000 interventional procedures have been performed with very good results. The department is imparting academic/technical training to the Cardiovascular Technology students. Two DM post
