February 20, 2016

Welcome to the 12th Annual District Science Fair

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Norfolk Public Schools’ 12th Annual District Science Fair. The enthusiasm for and anticipation of this event began during the 2004-05 school year. This event provides our students in grades 3 – 6 the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of scientific concepts through innovative scientific research and investigation, which supports the Scientific Investigation strand of the Virginia Science Standards of Learning objectives. The scientific investigation skills being displayed by our students today were introduced in kindergarten and will be mastered in high school. As you view the projects of the 2015-16 Science Fair Participants, you will find that they feature the 21st century skills required for success as future health care providers, astronauts, engineers, mathematicians, and scientists. Our students are well on their way to making key discoveries and solving the global problems of the future. The Science Office of Norfolk Public Schools strives to prepare students to be productive contributors to society through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning opportunities. Because of this, we endeavor to support the general principles of the STEM Education Coalition, namely the principle that “our nation must expand the capacity and diversity of the STEM workforce pipeline to prepare more students for the best jobs of the future that will keep the U.S. innovative, secure, and competitive.” Furthermore, since STEM education is linked with our nation’s economic prosperity in the modern global economy, strong STEM skills are a central element of a well-rounded education and essential to effective citizenship. A personal thank you is extended to the teachers, administrators, and parents – your patience, encouragement, support, and guidance are certainly appreciated as you assisted our students in preparing for today’s event. To the 2015-16 Science Fair Committee – you are wonderful! The countless hours used to plan and prepare to make this a successful event are greatly appreciated. A special thank you is extended to our 2015-16 Science Fair Judges for providing your expertise and professional feedback. And finally, to our 2015-16 Science Fair Participants, I congratulate you on a “job well done” – you have demonstrated mastery of skills necessary for exemplary scientific discovery and inquiry. Excellent job!! Warm regards, Adrienne R. Britton Senior Coordinator of Science Norfolk Public School
