Welcome to the North Texas FIRST ® LEGO® League (FLL) Regional Championship Tournament! FLL continues to grow by leaps and bounds in North Texas, with a total of 484 teams registered this season. We know that this will be a day of high energy and excitement. Remember, although this is a competition, we want to make sure EVERYONE is having a great time!

Whether you are a competitor, parent, sibling, or visitor – WELCOME! The Perot Museum of Nature and Science and Parish Episcopal School are pleased you are able to join us for the 12th annual tournament.

The following guidelines will help make your experience meaningful and will also allow the competition to move as smoothly as possible:

WELCOME To the 12th Annual Tournament

1

As you observe the competition, please cheer for

teams respectfully. Spectators who do not follow the

FIRST ® guidelines of Gracious Professionalism and

Core Values may be asked to leave the competition.

FIRST ®, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science,

Parish Episcopal School, and the FLL Committee

staff are not responsible for team valuables. Please

protect your valuable computers by assigning

someone to watch over your area.

Hashtag your photos with #NorthTexasFLL and tag @perotmuseum.

The Robot Competition Area, Pit Area, and Judging

Rooms are designated for team members and

coaches only. Parents, educators, and other visitors

will not be permitted in these areas. Spectators are

welcome in all other areas.

As teams compete, please be mindful to not use

ABOUT FIRST ®

FIRST ® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989

by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and

technology. Based in Manchester, NH, FIRST ® is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity.

FIRST ® is supported by a strong network of sponsors and volunteers.

FIRST ® provides the FIRST ® Robotics Competition for high school students and the FIRST ®

LEGO® League for ages 9–14. FIRST ® also offers the Junior FIRST ® LEGO® League for ages

6–9 and the FIRST ® Tech Challenge, a mid-level robotics competition that offers high

school students a more affordable and accessible opportunity to participate in FIRST ®. For

more information, visit firstinspires.org.

GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISMGracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST ® and is echoed by the Perot Museum of

Nature and Science. Gracious Professionalism is a way of doing things that encourages high-

quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. With

Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious

professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in

the process.

ABOUT THE LEGO® GROUPThe LEGO® Group, a privately held, family-owned company based in Billund, Denmark, is one of the

world’s leading manufacturers of high quality, creative, educational play materials for children.

The company is committed to the development of children’s creative and imaginative abilities, and

its employees are guided by the motto adopted in the 1930s by founder Ole Kirk Christiansen:

“Only the best is good enough.” For more information, visit LEGO.com.

QUIET SCIENCE SPACEIf anyone needs a break from the excitement of the competition, please join us outside the chapel

for fun science activities in a more relaxed atmosphere from noon to 4pm.

Innovation Project, Robot Design, and Core Values

2019–2020 FLL CHALLENGE

5

The 2019–2020 FLL Challenge, CITY SHAPER, consists of four components taking place during one daylong competition:

INNOVATION PROJECTTeams were tasked with identifying a problem with a building or public space in their community and designing

an innovative solution, sharing the solution with others, and then refining it. Teams are judged on their research,

innovative solution, and presentations.

ROBOT DESIGNTeams present the robots they designed, built, and programmed for the Robot Game and explain which missions

they built and/or programmed it to complete and their design process. Teams are judged on their mechanical

design, programming, and strategy/innovation.

CORE VALUESThe FIRST ® LEGO® League Core Values have been updated for the 2019–2020 season. The Core Values are no

longer program specific and have been replaced by the FIRST ® Core Values presented below. Teams are judged

on inspiration, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism.

FIRST ® CORE VALUESWe express the FIRST ® philosophies of Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® through our Core Values:

Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.

Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to improve our world.

Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.

Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.

Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!

TABLE OVERVIEWWhen placing your Field on an Official Table, gently slide the Mat until it meets up against the South and East Border Walls. To hold the Mat in place, you may use a thin strip of black tape on the West edge as needed. Where the tape sticks to the Mat, it may cover the Mat’s black border only.

The Robot Game consists of scoring points by completing several mini-tasks, or Missions, using

an autonomous robot. Teams decide on which Missions to complete and how, using strategic

thinking and planning.
