Leading the Way in Progressive Aboriginal Relations TORONTO, Sept. 23, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) is pleased to announce this year's results of the Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) program — the first and only corporate responsibility assurance program in the world with an emphasis on Aboriginal relations — at the CCAB's 12th Annual Vancouver Gala on September 25, 2014 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Vancouver. Three PAR companies recertified in 2014 are Higgins Executive Search, Scotiabank recertified at Gold, and Bruce Power progressing from Silver to Gold. Four new certifying companies, achieving Silver standing are ATCO Structures and Logistics, Suncor Energy, TransAlta, SaskPower and TD Bank Group receiving the Gold level standing. Also joining those PAR companies, at the Committed Level, are Allteck Line Contractors Inc, Austin Powder Ltd., Bee-Clean Building Maintenance Inc., Britco LP Brook McIlroy, Carillion Canada, ConocoPhillips Canada, Domcor Health, Safety & Security Inc., Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, Hatch, H.J. O'Connell Ltd., Hudbay Minerals Northern Superior Resources Inc., Roche, Supermetal Structures, Selwyn Chihong Mining Ltd., Valard Construction LP — increasing the number of PAR member companies to 40, a first for the program. Companies joining PAR are given the option to commence at the Committed level before Certification. "This year's Vancouver Gala is our opportunity to celebrate the continued commitment of our existing PAR companies and welcome newcomers to this extraordinary program," says JP Gladu, President and CEO of the CCAB. "As well we are honouring this year's Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Relations recipient Mary Simon. Celebration and optimism are the shining hallmark of this year's gala bringing together the best of the best in Aboriginal business, Canadian business and personal accomplishment."
Beginning in 2002, PAR has evolved into an online management and reporting program helping companies assess, plan and achieve Aboriginal relations goals and a certification program that confirms performance at the Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Certified companies promote their achievement with a PAR logo that signals to communities, and the market place, that they are good business partners, great places to work, and are committed to prosperity in Aboriginal communities; the designation is supported by an independent, third party verification of company reports on outcomes and initiatives in the four key areas that matter most to Aboriginal communities — Employment, Community Investment, Business Development, and Community Engagement — and a juried review by Aboriginal business people. Aboriginals clearing path to career success
Oilsands a major opportunity
BY KATHRYN BOOTHBY, FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 Stories about making our way to school in the depths of winter have been a staple of family conversations for centuries. As Trevor Grandjambe of the Fort McKay First Nation tells the tale, his experience was a special test of endurance. He completed Grade 9 in his home community, but subsequently he had to face an hour-long trip to Fort Mc-Murray every day to attend high school. But that didn't stop him from graduating. "Aboriginal people have many obstacles to overcome, but helping yourself goes a long way to helping you succeed," he says. "You have to work hard and keep your goals in sight." Grandjambe, 35, is a senior site supervisor with Bouchier Group, one of the largest aboriginal-owned and operated construction and facilities maintenance companies in the oilsands. He joined the company nine years ago as an entry level operator working the night shift, after working as a labourer in the oil and gas sector for a number of years. Continually upgrading his skills, learning on the job, and being proactive about leadership training helped Grandjambe reach his current position. "From supervisory and behaviourrelated courses I learned how to react to situations and how to manage people in the workforce," he says.
Nicole Bourque-Bouchier and husband Dave Bouchier started the Bouchier Group in 2004 with 15 employees. Their first contract was a $350,000 temporary access road for a mine site. Today the company is a multi-million-dollar operation with 750 people, half of whom are aboriginal, says Bourque-Bouchier. Promotion from within is very important to the company, she says. "We have people from all walks of life here. Some only reached Grade 5, some have a high school diploma, while others hold a degree. We recently introduced a learning management system to help our employees to self-train using the Internet. They can work through the web-based training and demonstrate their new skills with a competency test in the field. The system allows people to move into an apprenticeship or professional position within the organization." Canada's aboriginal population represents the youngest, fastest-growing demographic, says JP Gladu, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB). "About half are under the age of 30 and in some communities, such as northern Saskatchewan, more than 60 per cent of the population is under 21. That represents an incredible upand-coming workforce." Like the Bouchiers, an increasing number of aboriginals are creating opportunities for and empowering their own people, adds Gladu. "There is an underlying sense of community that makes them want to go forward together to succeed." There are also some great organizations that support aboriginals in addition to CCAB, he says, citing Ind-Spire and the Aboriginal HR Council who provide tools, resources and bridging opportunities between high school graduates and employers. Gladu also highlights companies such as Scotiabank that have achieved goldlevel recognition in CCAB's Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) program. The bank partners with the Martin
Aboriginal Education Initiative and local communities to deliver the Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program to reserve schools; offers scholarships and bursaries with universities across the country; and provides mentoring programs for aboriginal youth. "We see the aboriginal community as an incredible pool of opportunity and have a recruiter dedicated to increasing the number of aboriginal people we consider for employment," says Kaz Flinn, Scotiabank's vice-president of corporate social responsibility. Sodexo Canada Believes In Progressive Aboriginal Relations by Kelly Many Guns, November 3, 2014 At a recent gala in Vancouver, the Canadian Council for the Aboriginal Business (CCAB) celebrated the Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) program, the first and only corporate responsibility assurance program in the world with an emphasis on Aboriginal relations. In 2014, the companies that have joined the PAR program has risen to 40. Companies joining PAR are given the option to commence at the committed level before certification. Beginning in 2002, PAR has evolved into a online management and reporting program helping companies assess, plan, and develop Aboriginal goals and a certification program that confirms performance at the bronze, silver,or gold levels. Barry Telford, the new president of Sodexo Canada says Sodexo is proud of their PAR Gold certification status. “It is really a very important achievement for Sodexco as the PAR’s criteria goes hand-in-hand with Sodexo’s Quality of Life commitment to support community development and to improve the well-being as well as the performance of our partners,” Telford said. “It is important that we continue to ensure that our projects contribute to the advancement of Aboriginal People and to the economic, social, and environmental development of Aboriginal communities. This is absolutely fundamental in our approach.” Certified companies promote their achievement with a PAR logo that signals to community market places, that they are good business partners, and are committed to prosperity in Aboriginal communities. The designation is supported by an independent, third party verification of company reports on outcomes and initiatives in the four key areas that matter most to Aboriginal communities: employment, community investment, business development, and community engagement, and a juried review by Aboriginal business people. JP Gladu, president and CEO of CCAB says he sincerely appreciates all the support Sodexo has given to CCAB over the years in their programs
and events, as well as Sodexo’s efforts in advancing best practices in PAR. “There is no doubt under the new leadership of Barry Telford, Sodexo will continue to raise the bar in building Aboriginal business in Canada,” Gladu said. Quality of life is central to the performance and growth of individuals and organizations. Working from this perspective, Sodexo has redefined how to best serve their clients complex needs. Sodexo’s clients come from a wide spectrum, which include corporate, education, healthcare, remotes sites, senior living, and sports and leisure segments. For the past 40 years, Sodexo Canada has been recognized as a strategic partner for clients. Sodexo is a market leader in Canada in terms of revenue and consumers served and has been recognized as a top employer for the past three consecutive years. The key figures for Sodexo Canada is that they have 10,000 employees, and 1 million consumers served daily. Telford says, “Building partnerships with Aboriginal organizations and communities is tremendously important to Sodexo Canada. Those relationships are critical to our growth strategy and ongoing success. As a result, we invest significant resources to building and managing those relationships, including investing in our Aboriginal employees to ensure they grow and prosper within Sodexo.” Sodexo has developed Aboriginal support roles within the company as well as an Aboriginal Employee Resource Group (NAAC) that provides cultural awareness training at their remote sites. Telford talked about some of the upcoming PAR initiatives. “In my new role as President of Sodexo, although you may not consider it new, but I want to bring a tremendous amount of support to some of the new initiatives that we introduced recently to ensure that the intended potential is realized. This would include a partnership with OneXOne that supports selected Aboriginal communities through a breakfast program in Quebec. We also provide scholarship support through the Foundation for Advancement of Aboriginal Youth (FAAY), and we have just introduced a new scholarship at Bow Valley College in Calgary specific to Aboriginal Addictions. These are important initiatives for us that I believe will have some very positive impacts.” At the Vancouver Gala, CCAB awarded Mary Simon the 2014 Award of Excellence in Aboriginal relations. As Canada’s first Ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs, a lead negotiator for the creation of the Arctic Council, and former Canadian Ambassador to Denmark, Ms. Simon’s leadership is
international in scope with northern interests at the heart of her extraordinary career. Telford says he’s impressed with the quality of what he sees in Canada’s Aboriginal business community. “At the last CCAB gala in Vancouver, I met some very strong and vibrant business leaders from a variety of Aboriginal communities. I was struck by their commitment and passion for what they were doing, as well as the plans they had for the future. Strong leadership can move businesses a long way. This may be another area where Sodexo can be of support as we continue to develop our relationship with selected Aboriginal businesses who become our suppliers. I strongly believe the future is very bright.” JP Gladu shared his thoughts on the the current success of Aboriginal business.“The trajectory of Aboriginal business is substantial. Companies that are able to develop relationships with Aboriginal businesses and communities will see significant dividends for both the corporate sector and the communities they have partnered with.” To find out more on current research on the state of Aboriginal business in Canada go to: https://www.ccab.com/research Please find this article online at: http://www.firstnationsdrum.com/2014/11/sodexo-canada-believes-in-progressive-aboriginal-relations/
